Regarding M$ enforcement of licenses...

In case you haven't heard, M$ is auditing a dozen or so large school districts for compliance on licensing. Of course, this will be ugly and will run one district an estimated $1,000,000 per year to comply with M$. That's $1,000,000 more then they pay now. M$ is offering a simplified arrangement whereby a school system pays a flat fee for every Intel box (regardless of what it might actually be running) that would run that same district about $30,000. You can see where this is headed! Aside from noting that people's dishonesty about paying the real costs associated with M$ software has gotten them into this trouble (if only because the real costs are not apparent to "management"), I'm wondering what is available as a real alternative to M$ for the great unwashed masses. Of course, the answer I would expect to hear is "Linux!", but... I'm talking about a solution that is useable by those who are not rabid members of a LUG, or Sys admins in their day job. I'm talking about productivity software that will seamlessly read and write M$ file formats (Excel, Word, etc.). I don't know, for example, if Star Office is a real alternative because I don't know how well it interoperates with those who use Word, for example, on a daily basis. Perhaps there is a solution that will reliably run M$ applications without having to buy the OS, but that is only a step in the right direction. I was hoping to hear suggestions about what is out there and if Linux is ready to work seamlessly in heterogeneous High-Tech world. This might be a good topic for one of the WLUG meetings... Steve

I find the Knoppix CD/DVD useful for testing a new piece of hardware (like a laptop) to see if all of the pieces work with Linux. I believe that the Ubuntu CDs can also boot up in a live mode. In this way, you can try Linux without messing with your hard drive, and also see if your hardware works with that distribution. Note that if something doesn't work with the live CD, that doesn't necessarily mean it won't work with Linux at all, but demonstrating that something *does* work is a good thing. Just a thought... Spectrum, Recursive dns and interception of root authoritative DNS

Hey all. I was wondering since were all? Worcester or surrounding and dealing with Spectrum as an ISP, if you’ve run into the same thing I have in the last few months. I used to, as you’ll see soon, run unbound as a recursive DNS server in my home network to cache and limit external DNS queries that was the forwarder behind Pihole. It worked great for a very long time. But a few months ago, my internet went down, and It turned out to be non cached dns queries starting to fail. I realized in logs that unbound was getting errors reaching out to dns servers and disabled it until I could investigate instead forwarding to cloud flare temporarily. Now that I have had time to research and investigate, I have found that at least SOMETHING is intercepting my my queries to authoritative DNS servers when I reset unbound and it throw’s away the response because they aren’t “AA” status responses and it never caches the root dns and therefor won’t resolve anything. I come to find out the “authoritative” servers are responding with a status of RA which means it’s not the actual authoritative service when I query manually, dig @198.41.0.4 . NS +norecurse an actual authoritative, and that this is most likely a change Spectrum has made. Has anybody else ran into this? Is it actually Spectrum. I guess I haven’t dug far enough yet to see if its may be a firmware update to my router, UDM PRO yet. Still working on that, but though I’d ask this group first before I dig into that and save myself the time and go straight to ISP workarounds. Thanks in advance! Looking forward to our next meeting!! iPAQ update

OK, I had a great time at the meeting on Wednesday, just let me say that first off. The great thing about linux is community, and WLUG certainly has that.... Now, at this moment I'm listening to a Nickel Creek .ogg on my iPAQ using Opie's media play w/ libvorbis. It's a little unstable, but once I get a decent flash card I'll finally be able to take my music files with me.... It took a while to get to this point. I disliked wiki before, now I positively HATE it (and I think Linux Magazine is on drugs for liking it so much). Stuff is just, missing - like how to make sure your iPAQ has dns entries by copying one file.....arrrgh! I could ssh in right away, and on usb, that was the easy part; but for some reason iptables weren't working at first and I had to wipe them and start over, now I've got dns AND iptables forwarding my packets, and the ipaq is on the internet (no, I'm not writing this e-mail on it, an iPAQ, no keyboard, remember?). The only problems I have are with the todolist (it won't start), and qtopia desktop (it won't link). The todolist is missing a library, which I'll find, but the syncing issue is a pain, it just won't see it. Brad's been great and he think going up to opie unstable may solve the issue, we'll see (don't you just love debian users? They say, "Go use unstable" as if that's just what people do...). Now, when I get a tape-player or mp3 input in a car stereo I can finally ask for that microdrive for Christmas! Thanks again! Wes

I use a wireguard VPN on my phone anytime I leave my house, mainly for ad blocking. I run pi-hole at home to block ads network wide, and when I leave wifi, my phone automatically joins the VPN at home and uses the same pi-hole servers for DNS. Doug and I were trying to figure where to project and onto what, and we do have some ideas in mind (generated fog, multiple sprinklers, side of house, bed sheets, et al.). In fact, I think we should use the projector regardless of how many attend - it will be easier for all to see. However, I doubt either of us would mention this to his wife, so buying a 60"+ HDTV, for example, is not entirely ruled out! ;-) If there are any unforeseen issues, my place would be backup, and there is high-speed Internet at both locations, so that shouldn't be an issue (But Doug has a pool!). Given the appropriate technology, like building on the wireless stuff we did this week, it shouldn't matter where the meeting is held (distractions like food and drink aside!). Steve
