Sadly no. I've looked at DokuWiki a couple of times. The problem is this. I'm lazy. The lowest barrier to entry is simply a directory called "Notes" with a bunch of text files. Being text and using a unix-like system, I've got tools like grep to find stuff. I figure the next lowest thing is some program that lets me take notes that I can then organize into some index and search against it as well. Beyond that now it becomes hosted somewhere, etc. Tim. I bought a bag of a dozen at Stark electronics about the time of Doug's talk two decades ago. I am down to just three of them. Stark is long gone; where can I get more? I thought of Google, but I could not remember what the plugs were called. After paging quickly through a few slides, there was the answer! They are called RJ-45 plugs and you can buy them through Amazon. They come in bags of 100, which is excessive, but not too expensive; ($10-15). I suppose I will get a bag. That's more than a liftime supply. In a couple more decades you will be able to pick up about 90 of them _real_ cheap at the estate sale, or free from the dumpster. -- Keith

FYI: Regedt32 is a slightly uglier RegEdit but includes the ability to change the permissions of certain keys (i.e. driver enum keys etc). Even when logged in administrator (which is probably why you cant change the registry - are you logged in as administrator or similar rights?) certain keys do not have write/delete access. Using regedt32 allows you to change the permission (assume admin rights) of such keys and therefore modify them. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. The discussion at the end of the last WLUG meeting demonstrated little more that that there were about as many views as to how to proceed as there were people in the discussion. Lots of chiefs, no indians. Now I readily confess that I am very good at spotting the negative side of just about anything. :-) (On a plane ride from Florida to Philadelphia, I once convinved a pharmacological colleague that an idea he was exploring made no sense at all. Years later, when Julie Axelrod got the Nobel prize for that general concept, I had one of those "oh shit" moments. Fortunately for me, the guy from Philadelphia, it turned out, had dropped the issue, but not on the basis of my comments.) The other horn of my dilema, is that I would like to help, but don't want to appear and just be a wet blanket. Since the "event" is right here is Shrewsbury, I'll probably show up (since I can at least function as a "gofer", pull out power cords and the like) but try to maintain a low profile. doug

Make sure that you update the MAC address with charter, and that they actually update it. I've had a few problems where they haven't even though they said they did. Also, a lot of modems have diagnostic suites built in. An easy enough way to get at it is to turn it off, and unscrew the coax line. Now boot it up, and it won't get an IP from charter, but it should give your router an ip like 193.168.100.100, and the gateway should he something like 192.168.100.1 (check for specifics) but that gateway is your modem. Punch that IP into a browser and see what comes up, usually the password is something stupid, and a Google search will yield it if its not admin. Keep in mind you pulled the cable, so it will show that. But even with these, you still should "scrub" the array--try to read every sector on all devices that make up the array--to find errors that might otherwise be missed. I believe that is what the checkarray script that John posted about does. checkarray appears to be a Debian-specific script. My Fedora system has a similar one called raid-check: /etc/cron.weekly/99-raid-check /etc/sysconfig/raid-check #!/bin/bash # # Configuration file for /etc/cron.weekly/raid-check # # options: # ENABLED - must be yes in order for the raid check to proceed # CHECK - can be either check or repair depending on the type of # operation the user desires. A check operation will scan # the drives looking for bad sectors and automatically # repairing only bad sectors. If it finds good sectors that # contain bad data (meaning that the data in a sector does # not agree with what the data from another disk indicates # the data should be, for example the parity block + the other # data blocks would cause us to think that this data block # is incorrect), then it does nothing but increments the # counter in the file /sys/block/$dev/md/mismatch_count. # This allows the sysadmin to inspect the data in the sector # and the data that would be produced by rebuilding the # sector from redundant information and pick the correct # data to keep. VERY DANGEROUS. --write-sector Writes zeros to the specified sector number. VERY DANGEROUS. The sector number must be given (base10) after this flag. hdparm will issue a low-level write (completely bypassing the usual block layer read/write mechanisms) to the specified sec- tor. This can be used to force a drive to repair a bad sector (media error). But I would really think about replacing any disks that have developed such bad sectors, as it is only a matter of time before you run out of spare sectors to reallocate to.

So my primary keyboard these days is one of the older TEK keyboards. They're still mostly QWERTY, but have moved a few of the special keys around, like enter and delete. Even these took some time to get used to, and a little more time to get used to switching back and forth with the typical layout on anything else. I'd have to see some pretty impressive improvements before I'd try to really put in the work to learn and switch between the whole alphabet. Besides, I find that the keyboard is rarely the bottleneck - I quite frequently can type faster than I can think, so typing faster wouldn't speed up my work at all!
