Setag Lib, Microsoft linux is very very good. I use it all the time, though I find I keep getting "SEG_HATESELF" errors all the time. I have an Abit BX6r2 that I no longer use. I was running a Celeron 566 (nominally 66Mhz FSB) at a 100Mhz. A P3 850 uses the same multiplier, so it will run on this board. It's also a great overclocking board. You won't get that with an Intel. I can bring it to the next meeting and you can test drive it first. If you're interested, I'll let it go cheap. Are any of them of the Flex ATX form factor? They might be usable for a (noisy ?) mini-itx build. A quick google on power edge server power supplies show something that looks like it might be flex ATX form factor and an other power supply looks like a long square(ish) thingy. Let me know if you plan to bring them to the next meeting. I could use that as an excuse to drive up to Worcester. Norm, This is no big deal if you know what hardware you have. You will need a second linux machine to solve this so perhaps someone will agree to drop by the next meeting with a laptop. 1. Get a machine with mtools, superformat and syslinux installed and a kernel source tree. 2. Recompile a non-modular kernel with support for your hardware and filesystems and nothing else. 3. Insert a floppy and then run: superformat /dev/hd0 4. When that's done run: syslinux /dev/fd0 5. Mcopy the new kernel from /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot to the floppy: mcopy /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage a:\kernel.img 6. Open a text file called syslinux.cfg in your favorite editor. 7. Put the following in syslinux.cfg (with the appropriate value for your root parition filled in): DEFAULT LINUX LABEL LINUX KERNEL kernel.img APPEND root=/dev/{your root partition device here} 8. Save that file then mcopy it to the floppy: mcopy syslinux.cfg a: 9. Reboot your machine from the floppy. There are other ways to do this that may be more elegant. For example you may be able to so this on your machine by booting the rescue kernel with the first RedHat CD and then chrooting to your environment. This how I do it, though ;-). -Adam

2 x 4TB, RAID 1, I prefer to boot from them (hmmm...although not booting from them is an excuse to buy an SSD for the boot drive...) I already use ZFS on FreeNAS, but I'm wary of using ZFS on Linux since it is a third-party addon, you must recompile it every time the kernel changes, etc. I never liked having to do that for the Nvidia driver. Losing your video display is one thing, losing access to your data is much worse... Hi, Based on one of our post-meeting pizza discussions last night I thought I would send an e-mail (something I do so rarely). Here is a site that has a good selection of WIFI gear (APs/amps/antennas). I have never ordered from them but they appear to have a good selection of radio gear. http://www.fab-corp.com/ A few ideas to remember: 1) A stronger omni directional antenna (greater db numbers) will improve both your transmit and receive and both are important for range for WIFI. 2) Directional antennas must be aimed at the other radio. You get more gain, but they are usually not the solution if you want to wander your house/deck/yard with the laptop. 3) Amplifiers have downsides; 1) another device to power 2) another device to fail later 3) a good one runs around $200 with both transmit amp and receive pre-amp. 4) Antennas are rated in decibels (db). Most antennas on access points are round 3db - 5db. In terms of signal strength an increase of 3db is a doubling of effective power (Ex 3db to 9db is roughtly 400% stronger). 5) The weakest link in WIFI is usually the card and particularly the internal antenna in the laptop on the far end. 6) You do not succeed unless both devices can both "transmit" and "receive" the other radio. 7) Selection of a feed cable for an external antenna is VERY important. At 2+ghz frequencies a long cable (>1 foot) or a poor quality cable will loose everything you are trying to gain with a better "numbers" antenna. >From a local computer AND radio geek, Joel Desrochers
