WLUG BBQ!!!

Hi Everybody, Although I have not yet updated the WLUG website, the WLUG BBQ is going to happen! The BBQ will be held in Shrewsbury at Doug Waud's house like it was 2 years ago. Directions are forthcoming. Thanks, Doug! Our next meeting of WLUG will be at the BBQ on Thursday, August 22, 2002. The BBQ will start around 6 PM and go until Doug kicks us out (watch it, he has Steve as his bouncer). If you can't make it at 6 PM, show up whenever you can. WLUG will supply the food and munchies and will have sodas on hand. You may BYOB (beer, wine, whatever) if you wish. If you would like to bring a salad or dessert, feel free! Label your container with your name to insure its return. Doug has a swimming pool which we can use, so if you are interested, bring a bathing suit and towel. Its not clear to me if one must actually *wear* the bathing suit. We'll rig up some kind of projection system for a LInux talk of some flavor. It may end up getting used by some of you ASCII Art fanatics, but that's OK too. ;-) What good would a Linux party be without an Internet connection, a projector, and a laptop or three? Please RSVP to me and let me know that you'll be coming. In this way, we can be sure to have enough food on hand. Other party ideas? Send them out to the list! The problem doesn't exist on my other machine, even though I intalled the same stuff. I'm thinking it might have to do with my funky vid card (ELSA GLoria-L). Sax2 won't run on this machine - it goes to a black screen that won't respond to any keystrokes except the reset button. I had to setup XFree 4.1 with the old sax, passing monitor and server parameters to it on the command line for it to run correctly (hsync, vsync, screen resolution and server). Sax2 doesn't seem to have the same switches. Is it bad to setup newer versions of X with sax instead of sax2? BTW, I had a lot of trouble setting up the older version of XFree from the CD's, too. Nothing in the instructions say whether it puts a load on or not. I changed my video card, because the fan was making noise, and all reboots since then have been ok. No blank screens. Before, it was about 1/4 of the time. I did have one lockup since changing the vid card, and I think I read somewhere that it could be a result of using a realtime kernel. (someone correct me if I'm wrong.) I was doing a lot at once when it happened. Guess I have to experiment with it some more and look inside the psu. Greg

Gotta say those are really stupid names and already used by philosophers and OS developers for much more important things. No matter. You remind me that I had a web page that I had forgotten about that recounts my experience with IPv6. Bottom line tldr: It works. I'm not surprised that matter/threads doesn't. "Any sufficiently advanced technology is no more reliable than magic." Fortunately, I don't care. The future of WLUG

Hey all, Last night's meeting was excellent, and I'd like say thanks again to Tim for giving me a ride home! Last night's discussion gave me ideas of ways we could improve general activity, increase attendence, and improve outreach efforts. Hosting a meetup.com group would be certainly improve discoverability, and getting in touch with WPI's computer science group would be great too. I think what a lot communities are doing nowadays is having a text chat format for users who want to communicate more easily over the internet, especially with mobile devices. As an example, there are Discord servers for Fedora, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, etc, and they have room sizes generally in the hundreds or even well over a thousand. Even before Discord they'd use IRC for providing support, posting updates, etc. Having a text chat of our own would certainly help improve participation -- I think Matrix would be a good option here because it has many nice features and has a fairly polished user experience: - Numerous clients available on desktop, mobile, and web ( https://matrix.org/clients/) - Persistent chat history - Link previews - Various bots to choose from for adding functionality ( https://matrix.org/docs/projects/bots/) - User moderation - Server federation - Self-hosting available, both client and server are completely FOSS - File sharing - Voice/video calls I have a screenshot if anyone wants to see what a Matrix chat room would look like: https://i.imgur.com/aVILcWB.png Or you can join the room I made: https://matrix.to/#/!EiTljkvagZDFKfQfFu:matrix.org?via=matrix.org Alteratively, if you have a Matrix client already: #wlug:matrix.org Any thoughts? -Josh

I believe the previous talk was about btrfs and compared it to zfs. I would consider this talk a stand alone talk that would focus on the features of zfs. Though my head's really full of noise. Thank you Dick for the talk tonight ( so much as I was able to stay for ) - your enthusiasm for linux advocacy and outreach was recognizable; and I enjoyed romping around your website - I wonder if your Canopus star-tracker work in the 60s had any outputs still in use on the Voyagers (some 14.6 billion miles away now...)! Sorry I had to leave early, but I arrived home interested to check it out. I use TinyCore linux on my daily driver laptop (Dell Latitude (c) 2012), which didn't have fotoxx in its package manager - so I built it from the source packages on https://kornelix.net/fotoxx/fotoxx.html. Incidentally, there is a LONG OVERVIEW section on that page which combined with your talk offered me more description of the features. Once I built it I began checking it out. It absolutely suggests a talented and devoted developer; it is quirky and polished in my novitiate eyes. Initially it attempted to tackle my entire drive, but crashed (a corrupt PNG took it down during the indexing); I then aimed it at a media specific folder, and I was surprised to see it creating thumbnails for mp4 movies - ultimately these files are just easily launched into VLC by a keystroke. Things I like - I like the Map view - I like seeing the thumb-tack indication of where my photos' geotags point. I like the Gallery's balance between fast thumbnails and some brief metadata - and I like that folders are shown with a count of inner images and folders -a nice sort of bread crumbs. I also like the prepackaged set of effects and filters - For instance Voodoo 1 applied to one of my photos created a nice effect. I'm sure these features bring powerful image editing techniques into more hands more easily than something with a steeper learning curve (say GIMP). I'm not sure it is about to become my go-to software though. I have been a long time GIMP user and so appreciate the skill I already possess therein. However, it does remind me that I desire a better gallery experience - formerly I used to use F-Spot Photo Manager, but that seems to be in-between working builds for some time ... So, I am not sure what my next step will be, but I again thank you for tonight's romp through Fotoxx!
