[CONTRACT WORK]

With thanks to the mailing list owners for the privilege of posting here. -- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- - LINUX SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR -------------------------- SolarWave Energy, a solar and renewable information technology firm, has a need for a talented individual to assist us on a contract basis (initial project and long term retainer) to set up and help maintain a set of servers. A little workstation support may also be needed now and then. The initial projects include: 1. Wrapping up a combined BackupPC/BACULA project - set policies and procedures - document - test restore 2. Establish a source code management system using Subversion with appropriate clients/tools on workstations - help develop policies, practices, and procedures - debug 3. Help design and then build a 3-tier test to production source code flow scheme using three servers (local, called "DEVELOPMENT", remote 1 called "STAGE", and remote 2 called "PRODUCTION". DEVELOPMENT for testing (playground), STAGE for "staging" to production (final test), and PRODUCTION for release. Other than when in a staging mode, PRODUCTION and STAGE can be switched into service as required should one or the other fail. Full details of these requirements will be provided, of course. Other help that will be needed in near future: 1. Assist company technology move to unified quarters (currently two facilities: Engineering in LITTLETON, MA and Administration/Sales in CAMBRIDGE, MA). Somewhere "in-between" has not been selected yet. 2. Assist in developing a better authentication scheme for remote (embedded) Linux data acquisition boxes. Ongoing: Retainer for telephone consultation, problem-solving, system maintenance, etc. Qualifications: 1. Thorough systems administration knowledge and experience with Linux servers and workstations 2. Depth of knowledge and experience with bash, perl, and php to facilitate automated processes. HTML nice to know. 3. Understands security implications/exposures and includes these considerations in all designs and work. 4. Has available time to focus on major projects such that they can be accomplished within a mutually-agreeable timeframe 5. Can execute a non-disclosure agreement to protect company information 6. OK....wont be till thursday or friday that I can pick this up. Can you confirm this comes with the monitor? Also, do you know if this takes ECC memory? Thanks, Karl. This makes sense. Why didn't I think of that! We have inadequate elex here which dips & dims lights frequently. Had sudden power outages a few times, including one very recently. I am not piping the modem logs anywhere; only check this if I notice an obvious problem. Results: Non available. Case (Motorola SB 6120) has only 2 screws, hex, 2 different sizes. No problem. Backplate then comes off & that's it. Nothing else to undo except whet seem to be clips, but we have no prybar tiny & thin enough to pry up these clip things. Case appears uncrackable, execpt maybe by dropping it from an airplane onto solid concrete. However. If it's only the power supply, I could test this by simply replacing the wall wart with an equivalent one from anywhere. Then I'd have to get the ISP to reprovision it, then watch to see if it worked any better after that. I do have an update from Ch4rter business office, which is relevant to my original beef with this ISP. Yesterday afternoon, I followed up by calling the business office, to ask why they changed their policy on what networking components their customers can or cannot own and administer themselves. The last person I spoke with said I am "grandfathered-in" to be allowed to own & run my own modem, since my account was opened before July, 2012 when the new poilcy was instituted (I'm a customer since there was something other than dial-up). Biz office says these techs who came to see me Thursday simply had "inadequate training" or "incorrect information" from their own supervisors. Both techs did look not older than about 3 days over 19. For the trouble call, I was promised a sup-tech & maybe one of these was, but only sup-ing the second guy how to open cardboard boxes of modems, smile at geekly grannies, & maybe how to drive the van. This modem is not in warranty & no longer manufactured (mine 2+ years old). But Motorola tech support confirmed that any old power supply 12V, 0.76A would run it. I'll borrow a power supply from somewhere, then try this thing one more time here before Responsibly Disposing of it by donating to a worthy friend's parts bin. The only reference I can find in the Samsung manual (a CD) is to linux running on a PC. I am not getting very far on the WEB either... Hmmmm. I can still get into my machines via HyperTerminal or putty, but I would prefer direct connection. I started to wonder if maybe I'm not thinking about this with a eye to the future. Maintaining this will be difficult. I decided to take a look on flathub.org. It does have a flatpak for pcsx2. https://flathub.org/apps/details/net.pcsx2.PCSX2 It is listed as 1.5.0-dev. The playstation 2 bios files needed to moved to a different location. It runs about the same as the regular version. Steambot Chronicles doesn't run at full speed on my computer (about ~50% PS2 speed). The flatpak version may have been a percent or two behind but hard to say for certain. I did have problems installing it. Following the instructions on the site didn't work. The repository is added in my Gnome Software but clicking on install gave an error "Failed to install file: not supported". Not sure why that is. I have been using Linux for 4-5 years no so I am definatly up for the task. I haven't had much experience with setting up a Linux router/firewall, but I think my other experience will be enough. Part of doing this project is to learn more using Linux as a router. I heard about the crippled WRT54G from slashdot and few other places. According to OpenWrt's wiki version 3 of the WRT54GS has 8MB of flash and 32MBs ram. However version 4 they cut it in half. Anyway thanks for the info. Lightning Talks @ LOPSA-East 2014!

LOPSA East 2014 starts in one week! All the talks have been scheduled, all the tutorials and instructors have been book, now all you need to do is show up, right? In http://scottberkun.com/essays/24-how-to-get-the-most-out-of-conferences/ Scott Berkun (author of five books, including _The Year Without Pants_) states: "There is no better way to meet others and access the most interesting and friendly people than participating." The good news is that even this late in the game, there's still a way you you to participate: Lightning Talks! Lightning Talks are a series of five-minute talks (no slides!) where enthusiasm is paramount and almost anything that might be of interest to sysadmins is on-topic. Have an idea for a talk or tutorial for a future conference you want to try out? Give a Lightning Talk. Want to share a cool new trick with your peers? Give a Lightning Talk. Have an idea for a tool and want feedback? Give a Lightning Talk. Want to convince your peers to change how they do their jobs, or quit their jobs, or not to make the same mistake you did, or step away from the keyboard and learn to cook? Give a Lightning Talk. The Lightning Talks session is Saturday, May 3rd, at 3:30 p.m. There's room for at least nine talks, more if people use fewer than their allotted time (five minutes). To sign up for a Lightning Talk, send email to <lightningtalks(a)lopsaeast.org> or contact the Lightning Talks coordinator (Adam Moskowitz) at the conference and sign up in person. Talk slots are on a first-come, first-served basis; there will be a waiting list, and if there's time at the end of the session you can just step up to the microphone without signing up in advance (but don't count on this as all the slots are usually taken). Remember: Five minutes (hard limit), no slides, pretty much any topic. Yes, even cooking -- if you can find a way to tie it to system administration.
