Flat screen monitor 19" needs fixit; free to good home

The power went out here twice today. After the second event, monitor seems to have died. This is an Acer monitor, several years old. Black(ish) bezel; not glossy. Flat screen, I think 19" diagonal. Has been a very nice reliable monitor during its working life. Has choice of DVI input or the older kind of data connection, whatever that used to be. This specific batch of Acer monitors had used a type of capacitor which is known to have a higher-than-usual failure rate, and this is PROBABLY what it needs. Had a twin of this that fryolated same way 2 years ago, and a WLUG member came by & reported shortly after that he got it up & running with just the replacement of bad caps. This monitor has been very steady and reliable until this afternoon, with nice display and no dead pixels, ever. So if you are handy with electronics fixits, capacitors are cheap and you could probably get this working again with only a screwdriver, a soldering iron and a little bit of fiddling. Might be nice for the kid's playroom or the back office, or something. I don't know how nice games look on this monitor, since I don't do gaming. Videos always looked perfectly fine with good color. PM me if you think you want this, since I have to get down under the work table to unplug the power cord & I'm not as spry as I used to be, but can do as long as my knees aren't required to do anything radical before Noon. Pickup after Noon any day, & evenings even sort-of late-ish are okay. I can meet you at the door with this. I'm in Worcester near Elm Park. Rather give this away here than trash it, or Freecycle... first dibs to WLUG. Best wishes, Liz J

W.L.U.G. TV show...

For those who didn't attend the meeting last night, we talked a little about the idea of producing a linux focused TV Show. From that discussion we decided that the best thing to-do would be to have the main part of the discussion through the mail list. So, here it is... Firstly, I think we need to decide who our target audience is. This morning I came up with notion that generally, users can be broken into several groups. The first group are novice users. These are people who use a computer, but the concept of an operating system or the idea that windows isn't just "part of the system" and not removable is alien. The second group is "advanced" users. I think most of us would fall into this group. We understand OS's, hardware, software and all the digital glue that holds it together. The third group is educational users. These would be people who work in some education institution and they're interest in linux would be from the standpoint of deploying it for cost savings and/or using it as an education tool for teaching. The forth group would be corporate suit types. These are the people who read the trade rags, but don't have a clear understanding of what linux. They've read lots of conflicting FUD on the subject and aren't sure how linux could be used in they're environment or what the real TCO would be. Personally, I think we should go after groups 1-3. The reason I'm not too worried about the fourth type is that now that redhat had decided that they're going to go full force into the enterprise environment, they'll be busy spending lots of PR dollars convincing the suits. What do people think. Also, if it is the consensus that we should focus on groups 1-3, should we narrow our focus even more? Thanks, Tim.

At the meeting last Thursday, I asked about a problem I'm having with KDE desktop, and Tim mentioned I should run 'tail -f /var/log/messages' in another terminal while loading KDE. Description of problem: KDE starts to load, tells me it's checking peripherals, and then the screen goes black. Ctrl-alt-back kills the xserver and gets me out. In running the tail, I discovered that KDE really is runnning OK, but I have to switch to another virtual console (alt-F2) and then ctrl-alt-F7 will get me to the kde desktop. I get error messages from modprobe while kde is loading. It's looking for sound-slot-1, which I think is odd, because modules.conf doesn't say anything about a sound-slot-1. I only have one sound card, and it's at sound-slot-0. I tried turning off the sound server in the kde control center, and that didn't help. I also get gpm error messages when I go in an out of an x-session. Changing GPM_PARAMS in /etc/rc.config to the correct type of mouse helped get rid of flaky mouse behavior in console, but the error messages continue. Below are the messages. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated. Hi All, I am having much better luck with the SuSE kernel-smp-2.6.11.4-21.8 kernel. The dual core machine boots normally (i.e. without maxcpus=1) and /proc/cpuinfo shows the four cores. Unfortunately, the SuSE's (9.3) particular iteration of the forcedeth module seems to be having trouble with the networking bits of the nforce4 SLI chipset. Rather than dipping into the SuSE kernel-of-the-day development builds, I think I am going to drop in an Intel NIC in order to move forward. I will send an update when we put the machine through its paces. -Adam p.s. I just found a shrink-wrapped Maxell Mammoth cleaning tape and an upwrapped unused Compaq DLT IV tape in a moving bin. I don't need them anymore. I will let the DLT IV go for 15.00 and the cleaning tape go for 5.00. Email me off list if you are interested. I can bring them to the Sept. meeting. It seems to me that you want both resiliency (able to suffer a drive failure) and checksums of the files you have on there as well. Would it make more sense to use 'tripwire' with an ext4 filesystem? I know that rock solid filesystems are my choice. I've looked at using XFS and JFS in the past... but the downsides were just too much for my tastes. Esp since I do like to upgrade kernels and such. Being able to resize the filesystem (offline is fine) is a winner. Online resizing would be even better, but that's a much tougher nut to crack. I sure do miss Doug. I definitely remember the installfests and I even have a couple cd's that a I burned and made use of the cd printing machine we had at Stratus. The two I definitely remember were done in the education center at Stratus. As for Bob I see that he's joined the meetup WLUG group! Tim.
