Greetings Programs!

Hi, I'm Lexi! I've not been to a WLUG meeting since ... since a long time .... I remember a Blender talk, and a Maddog talk - and these look like circa 2003/2004.... So, absent a long time! Anyways. I am trying to find the time to come again. I've been a casual Linux user since 1998, when I installed Debian from a pile of floppies (( or should I say, my friend installed it for me, and my learning journey began )) .... and for a long time I was an exclusive user .... and at heart I think I am still - even as I flog along a 10 year old iMac. But for a couple years now, on my laptop I've been running 'Tiny Core Linux' , which if you're unfamiliar with it, it is based on the Linux From Scratch work, with an emphasis on a 'tiny' footprint. Needed additional software are mounted into ram from squashfs archives, on the fly. It is quirky, but I like it. I wondered if anyone else has used it (or uses it). I didn't feel right just asking blindly, without a vague reintroduction of myself. So - question: Anyone else use, now or previously, the Tiny Core Linux Distribution? I've got an Inspiron 8200, and I bet you're talking about an Inspiron 8100. If that's the case, then you can try it out with my AC adapter. GPS on Linux

Andy, I think you were talking about using a GPS receiver with Linux after the last meeting. The receiver I had mentioned came in a couple days ago. It's a Navibe SP611 (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=NAVIBE-ORN) and it does indeed output NMEA 0183. The Navibe website is easy enough to find (http://www.navibe.com/) but it doesn't even acknowledge the existence of the SP611. Linux seems to recognize the serial/USB bridge in the GPS as a Prolific PL-2303: dmesg says: usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 pl2303 2-1:1.0: pl2303 converter detected usb 2-1: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0 But I can't get GPSMan or GPSDrive to recognize it. "cat /dev/ttyUSB0" gets no response, and I have to hit CTRL-C to get the command prompt back. Per this page (http://koti.mbnet.fi/lonnberg/pl2303x.html) I found that bMaxPacketSize0 = 64, which suggests the bridge is a PL-2303X rather than a plain vanilla PL-2303. Apparently this used to require a patch, but only up to kernel 2.6.8. uname -r says I'm at 2.6.15-1-686, so this shouldn't be an issue. What should I try now? Oh, the GPS receiver did send a stream of NMEA data to my Windows computer at work with GPSDiag, so the reciever doesn't seem to be defective. -- Rich

My take which started long ago: 20-30 yrs ago as a sysadmin supporting remote access/workers, my (very not-genius-level) brain learned that a VPN... a box/product I'd install on "my"/work network, handing out INside-access to outside-workers for a session.... adds (pops up during session) a virtual interface on home-computer network stack, so while in a VPN session the home worker can magically "have an ipaddr on the inside of workplace network" thus allowed into not-public work servers (or drive their work desktop) BUT! on server setup, I+bosses must decide if yes/no allowing split-tunnel (policy set on VPN server which the VPN clients suffer with usually? if "no split") If yes/split-tunnel allowed, client gets a 2nd! default gateway = route to 0.0.0.0 giving best home-computer network performance (mixing work and play works well) BUT smart?/paranoid-workplace setups choose NO split tunnel, and force home-user's (ISP-given) default route to either disappear? or become unused via route metric/preference adjustment? so that, either way "don't let the home worker's unsafe world anywhere to tunnel near/into work network". Thus the downside! When workplace uplink is wimpy/ancient (e.g. T1/56kb then), and all home-user's internet traffic gets tunnelled in+out via WORK network pipe, envision as I had to discover, how that stinks awfully: adding+forcing+slowing-down home/play traffic via busy work pipe/route-to-0.0.0.0! Sorry to ramble, later I joined WPI netops, but not deep into security/VPN. (Frank/Chuck/Ben/John+more: I miss you all bigtime, I learned so much) So (now retired) I see endless TV ads for VPN's preaching the benefits of their secure VPN, and I don't get it, .... assume buyers/sheep are fooled. Real value = ? I may be blind, but lacking a VPN, my outside/web traffic is still https / encrypted, are they selling some enhanced default-gw world featuring bad-guys-blocked-from-hacking-you? I trust my home router, though I'm open minded to how "wide open" that might be, relative to some ideal. =====side rant, but I can tie it in :) One guy at work, long ago not WPI, did inappropriate network/chat/etc things on lunch/etc time, and ALL his internet traffic thru my/work router was directed to/from at a service/server which he subscribed to, with the benefit of anonymizing himself and hiding his uncool chat rooms (appearing to be elsewhere, tunnelling unsafe habits for work desktop whether sysadmin=netadmin=I was blocking them or not) Too bad for him though: cubicle wall height = below boss's eyeball from adjacent cubicle, and he got canned, while I helped his boss figure out what was going on. So, maybe or maybe not, that's the kind of VPN I suspect they're selling, but I don't see the value for normal folks....or maybe anyone. (educate me!) Unless their hosted-server-world-route network security is a win. It's not open source, but I use Obsidian at work. After doing some research, this might be my new note taking app. Another very interesting FOSS tool out there is called "Trilium" https://github.com/zadam/trilium As much as I like google's keep.. I'm fully aware that google capable of just pulling the rug out from under me in a moment's notice. I've spun up U22.04.3 server and I'm going to tinker with Joplin and possibly Trilium and let people know what I think of them.
