This is the one I was using before I switched to MobaXTerm. http://www.straightrunning.com/XmingNotes/ It worked ok. I had to set an export to set the default display before it would work but otherwise it was ok, and free. I think it is probably more powerful than I realize but haven't had the time to dig in yet. Plus my WSL install is all mangled currently (another WIP for me). Right now MobaXTerm just works for me so going with it until I can swing back around and absorb this one more. At least 2 years ago, I flashed my Netgear WNR3500L with DD-WRT (build 14929) and have been a very happy camper ever since. I chose DD-WRT over OpenWRT because it adds SNMP support, which (at least at the time) OpenWRT didn't. I remember I was able to improve wifi performance over factory, but I can't remember what specific tweaks I made. What follows is my experience / thoughts from this process. I would happily bring the hardware to demo at a future meeting if there is interest. Likely wouldn't be a full meeting but a 10-15 minute filler. More likely Q&A than anything else. I decided to go with different router/firewall hardware so I bought a Netgear WNDR3800 which Jim mentioned and is also a favorite of the OpenWRT crowd. Mine was used and $50 shipped from e-bay. This model is one model old and no longer available new. FYI: Netgear website lists it as "out of support". My WNDR3800 was used prior, so I needed to do a hard firmware reset on the bottom of router with a paperclip (didn't know the prior IP used or the admin password). Once reset and rebooted, router worked fine and could login to the "default" Netgear firmware and configuration. Default username & password is printed under the router. Downloaded the recommended OpenWRT firmware for this model. Needs to be full "factory" (instead of partial upgrade) and squashfs is recommended. Netgear WNDR3800 Firmware download link gets you OpenWRT version 10.X version which is not latest OpenWRT. Web browser login to Netgear webpage/firmware and followed "upgrade firmware" link while pointing to OpenWRT download file on local disk. The upgrade/re-flash took around 4 minutes and after a reboot worked fine. Set password and reconfigured router and WIFI with my specifics. Was up and working on OpenWRT v 10.x. Next day realized I had OpenWRT, but not latest stable version. Upgrade firmware link does not go to Internet directly, so first download OpenWRT v 12.4 with "upgrade" and "squashfs" and save to local disk. Second apply this via upgrade button in OpenWRT web link. I could likely have saved a step by grabbing the OpenWRT v12.4 for WNDR3800 with factory and squashfs. I bet this would have worked had I tried it (and saved a step). General thoughts after use for a week: OpenWRT does not have an "update direct to mother ship" feature best I can tell that downloads file and updates it from web interface. Not a show stopper for me. Instead need to know your version of OpenWRT and download an "upgrade" file and apply as two steps. This would only matter if router was used/maintained by a non-geek. Prior problem occurred with similar hardware WNDR3700 with latest Netgear firmware (happened with prior Linksys also). A few embedded WIFI devices in home would disconnect and fail randomly and at least weekly. Thus far these device annoyances have not occured since swap to WNDR3800 and OpenWRT. No idea why, but definitely A win! OpenWRT has transmit power level settings for the WIFI radio transmit. Can decide to bump up the WIFI radio settings if user chooses. Even if you melt/destroy them, a cool option if needed & tested. Firmware update for OpenWRT works from a laptop on WIFI, which in my experience Netgear & Linksys and other vendors do not support flash without a cabled ethernet port. So the OpenWRT update scripts the 1) copy file 2) apply file 3) reboot device. My Next Steps: In another week will likely repurpose the WNDR3700 likely as a WIFI gateway for the "cheap WIFI radio" devices, (mainly TV, roku, DVD, etc.). Not yet sure if I will use OpenWRT for this. Look into the option of external antennas for the WNDR3800. I live out in the country and have few neighbors to notice/know/care. If I can get there... improved & reliable WIFI signal at my mailbox would rock.

It is the tower version, not the pizza box: http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/Example/component.front_zoom.h… I don't remember if it has an OS on there, but you can download various Linux distros or Sun Solaris for free to install. The 450 is a refrigerator sized box: http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/E450/E450.html This is a standalone unit with the side panels and wheels. There is no rack and no rack mount kit with it. It plugs in using a single standard PC-style IEC electrical cord, but has redundant power supplies. You can pick this up during business hours 9am-5pm at the Network Operations Center, WPI Morgan Hall/Lower Wedge, next to the Access Grid where we hold the WLUG meetings. We can only take cash. Hi, I'm Lexi! I've not been to a WLUG meeting since ... since a long time .... I remember a Blender talk, and a Maddog talk - and these look like circa 2003/2004.... So, absent a long time! Anyways. I am trying to find the time to come again. I've been a casual Linux user since 1998, when I installed Debian from a pile of floppies (( or should I say, my friend installed it for me, and my learning journey began )) .... and for a long time I was an exclusive user .... and at heart I think I am still - even as I flog along a 10 year old iMac. But for a couple years now, on my laptop I've been running 'Tiny Core Linux' , which if you're unfamiliar with it, it is based on the Linux From Scratch work, with an emphasis on a 'tiny' footprint. Needed additional software are mounted into ram from squashfs archives, on the fly. It is quirky, but I like it. I wondered if anyone else has used it (or uses it). I didn't feel right just asking blindly, without a vague reintroduction of myself. So - question: Anyone else use, now or previously, the Tiny Core Linux Distribution? GPS on Linux

Andy, I think you were talking about using a GPS receiver with Linux after the last meeting. The receiver I had mentioned came in a couple days ago. It's a Navibe SP611 (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=NAVIBE-ORN) and it does indeed output NMEA 0183. The Navibe website is easy enough to find (http://www.navibe.com/) but it doesn't even acknowledge the existence of the SP611. Linux seems to recognize the serial/USB bridge in the GPS as a Prolific PL-2303: dmesg says: usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 pl2303 2-1:1.0: pl2303 converter detected usb 2-1: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0 But I can't get GPSMan or GPSDrive to recognize it. "cat /dev/ttyUSB0" gets no response, and I have to hit CTRL-C to get the command prompt back. Per this page (http://koti.mbnet.fi/lonnberg/pl2303x.html) I found that bMaxPacketSize0 = 64, which suggests the bridge is a PL-2303X rather than a plain vanilla PL-2303. Apparently this used to require a patch, but only up to kernel 2.6.8. uname -r says I'm at 2.6.15-1-686, so this shouldn't be an issue. What should I try now? Oh, the GPS receiver did send a stream of NMEA data to my Windows computer at work with GPSDiag, so the reciever doesn't seem to be defective. -- Rich
