Re: [Wlug] large file performance on linux

All, here's a summary of what i have tried so far. I have tried using the O_DIRECT and O_SYNC flags with open(2) and i have been using a non-journalling filesystem, ext2. None of these options have yielded any better performance at the rates i'm looking for. I have not tried AIO. I don't think i can use a non 32-bit kernel on the xeons. Correct me if i'm wrong (it's happened before). As a temporary solution i created a memory filesystem, by $> mount -t tmpfs tmpfs -o size=6G /data/memory The writes are fast however i need another process to progressively move data out of the memory filesystem since i don't have enough memory to hold all 22GB of data i need. For those interested i have attached a small program which will use different options to open and profile the fwrite calls. To compile simply do $> sh ./testwrite.c $> ./testwrite -h $> ./testwrite -l 16 file.out I just wanted to keep you all updated. Thanks for all your help. I'll keep trying various ideas. Computer 4 sale

Dual PIII 1ghz Case + power 512mb ram 2 Hard Drives - 16gig + 8gig (or about that size) Sony IDE CDRW (fast, I think 48x,24x,16x) Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI Ethernet card $400 There will be 2 big gaping holes in the front if I can't find the 5 1/4 drive bay covers. No video card. Also, nVidia geForce 3 and above cards don't work with this motherboard. nVidia blames it on Tyan, and Tyan blames it on nVidia. My Radeon 7550 works just fine (but you don't get that). If you want, I have an old voodoo3 card which was in this at one point, it worked then, you can have it for free with the computer. Under Windows, I was never able to get USB working well (keyboard was fine, camera + mouse weren't). Under linux, usb worked 100%, so I'm assuming it's just my luck with windows and not the hardware. I will be wiping the drives clean before selling it, so you're on your own for an OS. I think one of the drives may be mounted "creatively" so be forewarned. If anyone wants it, hopefully we can arrange a drop-off & pickup, perhaps at a wlug meeting to avoid any shipping. Please send replies to me, and not the list. -Marc

Smart package manager

Greg Avedissian mentioned the Smart package manager (http://labix.org/smart) as an alternative, so I gave it a try. The Smart package manager appears to be Linux distribution agnostic. It works on systems whose package management is based on RPM, APT, APT-RPM, YUM, etc. I tried it on my laptop, where I was having the most performance issues with YaST's software handling program. I am quite pleased with the Smart package manager! Thanks, Greg, for the recommendation! I haven't yet installed the Smart package manager on my "good" system, but I probably will if Novell doesn't fix YaST in OpenSuSE 10.2. The Smart package manager has found a permanent home on my laptop. orinoco driver

Hi all, hope the BBQ went well, sorry I couldn't come (I was picking up my Brother-In-Law at Logan...sigh, one day I'll get to a meeting). I've got a netgear wifi card that works great in Mandrake Linux, with the exception of wep (I know, it's cracked). In doing some research on the card and the kernel module that loads wvlan_cs, I have found out that this module has been replaced (by and large) by orinoco_cs, which I understand to be more functional (i.e. maybe I can get wep working?). I tried modprobe -r wvlan_cs and modprobe orinoco_cs but it won't bind to my pcmcia card. So I figured, "Well, maybe my card is just one that can't use the newer driver..." WRONG! Just to see what it was like, I download Knoppix, burned it onto a cd, and booted it up. Guess what driver loaded? orinoco_cs!! And it worked well too. Well, since Knoppix is a cd-boot, run in memory distro; I'm not changing to it anytime soon. So I'm going to use this opportunity to learn something new. How can I bind the orinoco driver to my card? Sounds more like the power supply is taking it's time to die. As the power level dips thats where your errors/reboots are popping up. Easiest thing to verify is 1.) Turn off the modem and unplug. 2.) Remove case and inspect the board. 3.) If the board's solder connections look like there are not good connections ANYWHERE on the board then you probably have a bad solder issue, if the solder looks good, it's probably a power supply on the board problem which is a chip. 4.) Looking for advice for home server

I am looking for a cheap solution for the following: 1) Email server/redireector. I want to have a full custom domain and email addre0ss. 2) FTP server on the same domain as the email server. 3) GUI setup preferred, I do not want to invest the time (right now) to get this working as a 'ground up' project. 4) Total bandwidth needs should be negligible. How would you approach this? At a very high level, I am considering: 1) Dedicating a DDR3 (RAM) era Intel I3 P.C. (sorry, I don not know the generation) and installing NAS software with the appropriate docker plugins, if they exist. I do not know if this is even reasonable. Suggestions are appreciated. I am using a home ISP account. I am aware of DynDNS type services to get around the lack of a static IP. I do not currently plan on using this device as an actual NAS due to security concerns. If necessary, I will use sneaker-net to transfer data, although I am thinking about ssh or even RS232. 2) Renting out space on a service like Amazon Web services.
