Perhaps we can contrast the fundamentals of a Linux system with all of the new technologies becoming integral to a modern distribution? I've created a survey to get some insight on these changes in the Linux desktop and how quickly they're being adopted. Hey there! I have been away on vacation for the past few weeks, and in the process of changing jobs. Sorry for the lag! We would love you have the WLUG hosted at technocopia! We are working with the building right now to ramp down some of the building-wide COVID restrictions so that we can have public events at Technocopia again soon. Can you give us an estimate on numbers of folks coming to the meetings? I believe the UltraSPARCs were SCSI disks. You can probably find some of those on ebay real cheap. I could be wrong, though....and judging from the mails over the last few days I bet other people here will be able to correct that. Might as well take this time to introduce myself... My name is Justin St. Marie. I live in Worcester and have been using linux for years, but only for about a year professionally. I do what I can, but I am far from an expert in any *nix environment. I am a RHCT, hopefully able to pass the RHCE in a few months...we'll see... When is the next meeting? The website only said where it was, that I saw. WLUG BBQ!!!

Hi Everybody, Although I have not yet updated the WLUG website, the WLUG BBQ is going to happen! The BBQ will be held in Shrewsbury at Doug Waud's house like it was 2 years ago. Directions are forthcoming. Thanks, Doug! Our next meeting of WLUG will be at the BBQ on Thursday, August 22, 2002. The BBQ will start around 6 PM and go until Doug kicks us out (watch it, he has Steve as his bouncer). If you can't make it at 6 PM, show up whenever you can. WLUG will supply the food and munchies and will have sodas on hand. You may BYOB (beer, wine, whatever) if you wish. If you would like to bring a salad or dessert, feel free! Label your container with your name to insure its return. Doug has a swimming pool which we can use, so if you are interested, bring a bathing suit and towel. Its not clear to me if one must actually *wear* the bathing suit. We'll rig up some kind of projection system for a LInux talk of some flavor. It may end up getting used by some of you ASCII Art fanatics, but that's OK too. ;-) What good would a Linux party be without an Internet connection, a projector, and a laptop or three? Please RSVP to me and let me know that you'll be coming. In this way, we can be sure to have enough food on hand. Other party ideas? Send them out to the list! The problem doesn't exist on my other machine, even though I intalled the same stuff. I'm thinking it might have to do with my funky vid card (ELSA GLoria-L). Sax2 won't run on this machine - it goes to a black screen that won't respond to any keystrokes except the reset button. I had to setup XFree 4.1 with the old sax, passing monitor and server parameters to it on the command line for it to run correctly (hsync, vsync, screen resolution and server). Sax2 doesn't seem to have the same switches. Is it bad to setup newer versions of X with sax instead of sax2? BTW, I had a lot of trouble setting up the older version of XFree from the CD's, too. Nothing in the instructions say whether it puts a load on or not. I changed my video card, because the fan was making noise, and all reboots since then have been ok. No blank screens. Before, it was about 1/4 of the time. I did have one lockup since changing the vid card, and I think I read somewhere that it could be a result of using a realtime kernel. (someone correct me if I'm wrong.) I was doing a lot at once when it happened. Guess I have to experiment with it some more and look inside the psu. Greg
