my understanding is that it is free as in beer. I believe you can even go to the cisco web site, sign up for free, and download all the clients you want. Well, I might be a little out of touch with my old-fashioned Slackware ways, but I don't think there's supposed to be a /dev/eth0. DHCP must not be working if it's not showing up in ifconfig, but try ifconfig eth0 to see if the interface exists. You can always try running dhcpcd manually, too. Beware WRT54G with hardware version 5 does not work. as Cisco cripled the box with only 4M of ram. See info on www.openwrt.org for hardware compatibility. It's definitely not a newbie distro though, you need to know linux and networking. Some people try openwrt and are upset because it requires you to know something about Linux and networking. I know it's been mentioned, but wanted to point to two instances of it I use frequently and offer some additional feedback. There's the "premier" one, which is at https://meet.jit.si/ and is very often running the very latest version. The Mayfirst COOP also hosts an instance at https://meet.mayfirst.org/ This doesn't tend to be upgraded quite so frequently, so unless it lands on a poor version, it's a great one to use. Usually "just works" on phone/desktop fine. It can be a little glitchy, and has not often performed very well for my coop more than about 10 participants or so. Desktop sharing, video, audio, and chat as well as other features all function well on GNU/Linux save for some difficulty I had with Sway WM/Wayland (which may well have been my shortcoming). I'm not sure how dependent the limits we've seen are dependent upon the infrastructure available, but I'm told it's not terribly difficult to deploy an instance, but have yet to try myself. FWIW, nearly every time, a quick page refresh (or two) for whomever is having issues gets things working. John, I read what Linus wrote and I think the most important paragraph is the last two. This "deficiency" in the Alpha design was not that consequential to anyone but a very small number of people, and still allowed the Alpha to be the world's fastest microprocessor for (if I remember correctly) eight years in a row according to the Guinness Book of Records. As to the little vs big endian issues, the worst part was in reading undefined data across the network. What do I mean by "undefined data"? o The union statement in "C" o The equivalence statement in FORTRAN o The Linkage section in Cobol All statements that allow you to write the same data looking at it in different ways. If you write out a "block" of Integers into a file, there is no way that a system reading that file some time later could tell if those integers were written by a little endian system or a big endian system, so the Integers would be read incorrectly.
