How fast is your CD burner with Linux ?

I've noticed that my CD burner (according to K3B) averages about 24X, even though it is advertised as a 48X CD burner. Is this to be expected, or do I have a cheap(er) drive that can't sustain the data rate? It is an IDE/ATAPI drive (NEC3550). It takes approx. 4 minutes for me to burn a 700MB CD (including some fiddling and diddling about calibrating power, fixating, etc). I use Memorex CD-R media (52X, 700MB, 80 min). I'm curious about your CD buring experiences, especially if they are faster than mine. I'd like to know what drive you have, the media you use, and most importantly, how did you determine your drive speed? old equipment - update

Hi, again -- Tried to make it to the last meeting but was abducted, again. Most of the old equipment I had at work is gone. I was told to clear out the room and they found a STEM teacher at a local school who took it. This is what's left: Synology RS2416+ rackmount NAS w/ (2) RX1217 expansion units, AC + SAS cables - (36) 3.5" bays total (3) Dell PER805 2U rackmount servers (dual opteron) - w/ 1 set of rails, several new 2.5" SAS spares Dell PER300 1U rackmount server (dual xeon) - w/ rails, and a bunch of 3.5" SAS HDDs (pulls and new) Dell PER415 1U rackmount server (opteron) - w/ separate H700 HBA+cables, may have 8TB SATA HDD pulls installed (?) (I was unable to figure out how to make this thing do RAID10; the adaptor itself is worth something) Various 3.5" HDD pulls of various brands and sizes from 250GB to 2TB (2) Dell docking stations with AC adaptors Dell dock/monitor stand w/ no display panel (3) Dell monitor stands w/o panels Best offer. Anything left by the end of the month will go to recycling. Pete

Unable to make it tonight... still planning on presenting in Oct.

Hey Gang, I'll be unable to make it to the meeting tonight, however I still plan on doing a talk next month on "pygame". What's "pygame" you ask?!? "pygame" is a set of python libraries that wrap SDL written in C and assembler. These libraries take the nitty gritty out of writing games with python, or as they put it "we take the pure out of game development". I'm going to talk about the libraries in depth (with slides), show off a silly game I've written and then dive into the code of the game so you can see how absurdity easy it is to use. Obviously my talk is going to be python centric, but no worries. I'm using this as an excuse to teach myself python so it'll be educational to the python guru and the python neophyte alike. Also, if you install the personal edition, and you point to the Suse ftp site for updates, it will allow you to install the packages from the pro version. (At least the number of available packages suddenly increase about 4x) A friend of mine showed me this one, but I have not tried it myself. I don't personally mind if folks put relevant, local Linux job postings on the list, as long as it doesn't get out of hand. I know openalchemist is there. I have it installed. I maintain ostrichriders and btbuilder. I alerted the maintainer of shippy to my updated version of that program. What I'm interested in knowing, is when something is included in Fedora but not Debian. This doesn't have to be limited to Fedora and Debian. They just happen to be the ones I'm looking at. If you give a demo of say openalchemist at a user group meeting, it would be nice to be able to say it is available on Fedora and FreeBSD but not Debian. There is a PPA for Ubuntu. Ron, I hope you find the videos helpful! I think they summarize the issue better than I ever could. Jon, I look forward to seeing your write-up on this issue! I think a lot of the responses I've seen so far are understandable -- Red Hat has an image of being a pioneer in open source development, and closing up source code publication to anyone who isn't a customer is unprecedented and seemingly comes in direct conflict with Red Hat's goals. This is such a controversial development that there's an ongoing Wikipedia discussion on whether RHEL is even considered open-source or is violating the GPL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux#RfC_about_the_s… That being said, I think the community at large may be having a knee-jerk reaction to this news, which isn't helped at all by Red Hat's fairly poor PR handling. We might just need time to come to an understanding. Dec 12: Identity Management: FreeIPA, SSSD, Kerberos, etc.

I have an offer from Dmitri Pal, Engineering Director at Red Hat, Inc., to come to WLUG on December 10 and give a talk on Identity Management. He asked which of the following topics people would be interested in: "FreeIPA - I go over problem space and talk about what IPA does and how it solves the problems - about an hour with Q&A. AD [Microsoft Active Directory] integration I can give an overview of the AD integration options and talk about best practices there - about an hour with Q&A. Application integration - is about how to build applications integrated with different authentication methods out of box - 40-50 min with Q&A. I can combine. I also can talk about Kerberos and explain how it works and how it can be used for SSO [Single Sign-On]." I was thinking FreeIPA + Kerberos which would fit nicely into our usual 2 hour meeting slot and provide a nice introduction to the topic, but let me know if the other topics are of more interest.
