Wanted: used laptop power supply

I choose Slackware.. God help me! (And you guys, please?)

That�s why I hope to meet guys into slack. Tomorrow night�s meeting? The email below is about my climb in life and the three technical things foremost in my concerns. If you�re not into slack, there�s no need to continue reading. tks, Brian - - - - - - - - - - - - - I'm a newbie with just a little Fortran experience and a 1 gig HDD machine with Windows 98 and no printer either! Nonetheless I�m feeling the need to choose Slackware 9.1. It�s because I�ve read a bit of craft obligation and personal challenge in the following: �Slackware is Linux's oldest living distribution. It does not try to emulate Windows, it tries to be as Unix-like as possible. It does not try to cover up processes with fancy, point-and-click GUIs(Graphical User Interfaces). Instead, it puts users in control by letting them see exactly what's going on. Slackware is for people who enjoy learning and tweaking their system to do exactly what they want. Slackware's stability and simplicity is why people will continue to use it for years to come.� But simple does not mean easy, does it? Back in the days when men were Men........... I�m up in years (you�ll know me when you see I�m fat, ugly, and bald with white hair), but in my day I made 5 violins under a master (before life took me somewhere else). The only power tool I used was a band saw to cut smaller pieces out of a split log. You can make a violin out of very few knives, chisels, scrapers, and a block plane. I made my own patterns, knives, and scrapers. I had never worked wood before, even by power tools. (I never had had interest in those.) Those early instruments were slow going and not a little agony, but I knew with control of the hand and discipline of the heart that I could step up in my work, and take it to the level of art, well beyond anyone skilled with power tools. Am I a bit competitive and still trying to be a man�s man? Anyhow, I believe you see the parallel. I want to get to command line and not rely at an emotional level on commercial distributions what with all *their* packaging schemes (read: complications) and *their* bloatware GUI�s. It�s a bit about control and pride, isn�t it? How else can I bypass the Windows mentality and hope to step up in open source as a craft? I want to be a thinker and doer in this game, not just a consumer or user of various Distributions. My goal longer term is art, not just sitting at the feet of documented Authority. Another parallel: how can you design a Cadillac with no skills to build a model T Ford? Man or not, I�m scared! At the least I�m feeling a little shaky, and here�s why. Switching back to the violin story, I knew how to make those knives out of straight razors and scrapers out of blue shim stock. I could sharpen on my own the blade of a block plane until no one could see the edge. It was intuitive and it wasn�t rocket science. It took no prior reading or class instruction. I put in plenty of sweat time at the bench. It took me eight days (no kidding) to cut my first bass bar to a perfect fit, and I never backed off once from the challenge. Of course I knew my master was back there, watching. I did not quit while seeing him work at ten times my rate. My pride would not let me give up. But there came a time when I could go no further without my master�s help. Art was not possible without the ultimacy and intimacy of oral tradition. Thank God for newsgroups and the WLUG. It takes a community to raise a boy to manhood. So learning slackware, as learning unix in the old days, must require a combination of self-reliance AND guru help. In life we must settle for no false choices. Three items below. As background, I�m about ready to place an order for a stripped down machine with two IDE drives and Slackware. (Forget all that talk last week about SCSI, I don�t need bragging rights or a hardware �screamer.� Because, as you must know by now, the �screaming� I�m experiencing now has nothing whatever to do with any hardware.) 1. Partitions. I�m new to Linux, but trying to learn, so please don�t shoot me. What should my (various?) slack files look like? I have never seen any. I don�t know what to look for. Specifically, what partitioning specs can I give to the vendor who will pre-install and configure slack for me so that I have a working machine? I would like to be able to read and learn from these files BEFORE the iron arrives on my desk. I would like to split my slack partitions over two 80G disks for speed of random access. Thus, taking platter construction into account, the most frequently used partitions should be in the physical center of each disk. I would like to put slack primarily on hda, and, later on, any second distribution (Mandrake? Libranet? new Debian when it comes out?) primarily on hdb. What detailed partitioning do you recommend upfront to permit or pave the way for this control and flexibility? 2. Internet. auuggh..! Here, a problem of the chicken/egg variety. What should my slack files look like for dial-up access (to start with my current Prodigy) and DSL access (Speakeasy later when I�m ready to try downloads)? Unless I have these things up and running, I won�t be able to interface with online Linux help! 3. Printer. Anyone have a reliable model number for a Linux printer to suggest? Nothing fancy, just something to print out docs for Linux study in the woods, and an occasional letter. What should my slack files look like? (Of course I don�t know a thing yet about driver stuff..) These three are my foremost technical concerns that seem to be holding me back from my first flight. I hope to receive you hand up on these things! Possible Printer discussion

HI everybody, If it were possible for me to get a person to speak to WLUG regarding printers and printer drivers, would that be of interest? (Hint: say "yes"). I'm thinking of a programmer's talk here, not a user level talk. For example, what does the skeleton of a printer driver look like? What functions must it provide to user level software, and what does it pass to a queueing system or perhaps directly to the printer? How are JPG pictures converted to dots of ink that appear on your printer paper? What's the deal with these different dithering algorithms? What is dithering, and why do it? These are just some ideas to get the creative juices flowing. Let me know what topics in this realm would be of interest at a future WLUG meeting. OpenWRT on WNDR3800 home router - my install thoughts

Decided to try OpenWRT after Jim Getty's talk and strong recommendation last month for improved security and reduced local buffer bloat. What follows is my experience / thoughts from this process. I would happily bring the hardware to demo at a future meeting if there is interest. Likely wouldn't be a full meeting but a 10-15 minute filler. More likely Q&A than anything else. I decided to go with different router/firewall hardware so I bought a Netgear WNDR3800 which Jim mentioned and is also a favorite of the OpenWRT crowd. Mine was used and $50 shipped from e-bay. This model is one model old and no longer available new. FYI: Netgear website lists it as "out of support". My WNDR3800 was used prior, so I needed to do a hard firmware reset on the bottom of router with a paperclip (didn't know the prior IP used or the admin password). Once reset and rebooted, router worked fine and could login to the "default" Netgear firmware and configuration. Default username & password is printed under the router. Downloaded the recommended OpenWRT firmware for this model. Needs to be full "factory" (instead of partial upgrade) and squashfs is recommended. Netgear WNDR3800 Firmware download link gets you OpenWRT version 10.X version which is not latest OpenWRT. Web browser login to Netgear webpage/firmware and followed "upgrade firmware" link while pointing to OpenWRT download file on local disk. The upgrade/re-flash took around 4 minutes and after a reboot worked fine. Set password and reconfigured router and WIFI with my specifics. Was up and working on OpenWRT v 10.x. Next day realized I had OpenWRT, but not latest stable version. Upgrade firmware link does not go to Internet directly, so first download OpenWRT v 12.4 with "upgrade" and "squashfs" and save to local disk. Second apply this via upgrade button in OpenWRT web link. I could likely have saved a step by grabbing the OpenWRT v12.4 for WNDR3800 with factory and squashfs. I bet this would have worked had I tried it (and saved a step). General thoughts after use for a week: OpenWRT does not have an "update direct to mother ship" feature best I can tell that downloads file and updates it from web interface. Not a show stopper for me. Instead need to know your version of OpenWRT and download an "upgrade" file and apply as two steps. This would only matter if router was used/maintained by a non-geek. Prior problem occurred with similar hardware WNDR3700 with latest Netgear firmware (happened with prior Linksys also). A few embedded WIFI devices in home would disconnect and fail randomly and at least weekly. Thus far these device annoyances have not occured since swap to WNDR3800 and OpenWRT. No idea why, but definitely A win! OpenWRT has transmit power level settings for the WIFI radio transmit. Can decide to bump up the WIFI radio settings if user chooses. Even if you melt/destroy them, a cool option if needed & tested. Firmware update for OpenWRT works from a laptop on WIFI, which in my experience Netgear & Linksys and other vendors do not support flash without a cabled ethernet port. So the OpenWRT update scripts the 1) copy file 2) apply file 3) reboot device. My Next Steps: In another week will likely repurpose the WNDR3700 likely as a WIFI gateway for the "cheap WIFI radio" devices, (mainly TV, roku, DVD, etc.). Not yet sure if I will use OpenWRT for this. Look into the option of external antennas for the WNDR3800. I live out in the country and have few neighbors to notice/know/care. If I can get there... improved & reliable WIFI signal at my mailbox would rock.

With Fedora Core 3 there have been vast improvements in the area of hardware hotplugging, detection, and configuration integrated with the desktop. There is still more work to do, but it is getting better all the time. I'm not aware specifically of which USB adapters work best. The NatickFOSS group uses gettogether.community instead of meetup.com. I don't know that it has gotten us any visibility but the software is open source. I've been tempted to join meetup to go to Boston Indie Game Developer meetings but have so far held off. The NatickFOSS group also gets a booth at the Science on State Street event at Framingham State. It is a free STEM activity fair for kids. My job at the event is to generally occupy the time of the kids so the other members talk to the parents. First year I had a playstation controller hooked up to my laptop and held it out to any kid that walked by. Last year I brought the arcade machine assembled by my son's cub scout den. Any idea if WPI does any thing similar? Yep, definitely the case. Need CUDA cores, without them it's doing other and more work. It's funny the apple silicon will probably see faster performance increase than the Radeons just because that's where the people wrenching on this stuff are. I'm still in intel land there for OSX and will be for quite a while (audio software reasons). I'm operating slowly with a 2070RTX and agree, once you've got process, it is a much better value proposition to pay for cloud inferencing. Merging of large checkpoints, building intricate models, aren't possible on consumer hardware until you get into silly money and datacenter boards will always be faster in any case. There's facility and process for separation of elements but were I working professionally in this fashion I would not be expecting final output from inferencing. I would use it as a stock library, at this point in the tech anyway. Even the simplest use of the thing- generating backgrounds, saves so much work and allows for so much different _kind_ of work that if that was all it did it would be a revolution. Separation or direction of elements during inferencing has seen improvement in leaps and bounds, though. Not long ago it was just inpainting (creating masks), and autogeneration of partitions with math, then partition by token/attention and now even automatable manipulation of masking and weights by partition by mask. So it's definitely doable but would require each to build pipeline for their needs. Those tools are still in early stages but the ComfyUI¹ has a 'workflows' conceit for doing a lot of that with visual programming. I haven't moved on from grado library webui yet so no first hand experience with it. Already have pipelines for my purpose in that, the usual, no time to move to the bleeding edge~ For that particular need, the stock featureset of Automatic1111² can do growth, called "outpainting", of a given input. There's extensions to expand on steering capabilities for that but it does a fine job in my experience, as long as the checkpoint and tokens you're using "knows" something of the input. Talking about art is like dancing about architecture so I hope I'm being clear. Yes food and drink are allowed. The class room has lots of plugs along the walls, although bringing out some extra power strips can also happen. We support back to Cambrian era, so Mezozoic is no problem ;). Precambrian however you are going to need to bring your own microscope.
