The DECstation 3100 (aka the PMAX) was a system based on the same motherboard as the VAXstation 3100, except with a MIPS processor. It was the first time that Digital had built a system using another company's chip architecture. We had a choice between supporting the MIPS R2000 chip as "big endian" or "little endian". We chose to support "little endian" to be compatible with PDP-11s, VAXen and Intel chips, rather than be compatible with other manufacturers. This, in my mind, was very important since it let us share data over NFS and give greater compatibility with programs and libraries of applications already running on other Unix-like systems such as Ultrix, BSD, etc. Sun experienced this grief when they ported Solaris off the big endian Motorola and SPARC chips to little endian Intel. One of the few issues of the DECstation 3100 (and 2100, known as the "PMIN" after that) was that the serial I/O port did not support hardware handshaking. To save a couple of pennies per system the VAX hardware designers determined that having full hardware modem control (DECstandard 52) on the board was not needed, because "very few workstation users hook a modem up to their serial line". What they meant was that "very few VMS workstation users hooked a modem up to their serial line", opting for DECnet to handle their networking. Therefore the pins necessary to support hardware modem control were missing from the DECstation product lines. Unix users, on the other hand, often had modems hooked up to their workstation, to handle cu(1), uucp(1) and other serial line protocols. We eventually got around this by better refining software modem control, but it was painful. The proposal, design and release of the DECstation 3100 was a top-secret project inside of DEC, kept secret from even many people in the Digital Unix group in Nashua, New Hampshire. The development of the system was done in Palo Alto's WorkStation Engineering group and the software engineering was done in the Western Software Labs in Palo Alto, albeit by taking key engineers from the Nashua facility and transplanting them temporarily to Palo Alto. The implementation was kept so secret that it caught Dave Cutler, then working on DEC's next-generation operating system and chips, by surprise when it debuted at a Board Meeting in Maynard, Massachusetts. Shortly after that board meeting Mr. Cutler left Digital and moved (with some of his team) to Microsoft. The DECstations only were manufactured for a couple of years, as the DEC Alpha processor replaced MIPS in Digital's lineup. Although originally promised that OSF/1 would be ported to the DECstation line, this port was dropped due to realizing that there would never be an application base to support the customers of a DECstation OSF/1 port. PCSX2

Before the meeting on games, I tested pcsx2 thinking maybe I could show it. However, it was removed from rpmfusion in Fedora 30. PCSX2 is playstation 2 emulator. I have a working PS2 but the He-Man game was only released in Europe and it is region locked. The emulator finally allowed me to try the game. Since I didn't like losing that ability I've rebuilt the pcsx2 package for Fedora 30. http://identicalsoftware.com/dulsi/lzma-libs-4.32.7-21.fc30.i686.rpm http://identicalsoftware.com/dulsi/pcsx2-1.4-11.fc30.i686.rpm The src rpms are exactly the same as the files from fedora and rpmfusion. I cheated a bit in compiling the pcsx2 package. It had some errors with system headers files. Rather than create a patch to make it compile, I hacked the system header files. (It was a throw away VM because pcsx2 can't compile in 64 bit.) Free to a good home: HP PSC 1315xi All in one printer

Have you been waiting to get yourself one of those awesome web connected printers, but didn't want to shell out the big bucks? Well... you're out of luck, this is NOT one of those printers. If however, you'd like a reliable inkjet printer that works well with linux, let me know. The scanner / copier / printing functions all work. Better yet, it has new ink cartridges in it as well! Mind you, it is an elderly printer, but I've had zero issues with it. The only con is that HP branded ink cartridges are getting expensive, but the knockoffs work just fine as well. what size/speed combo to use for a dual SCSI system?

Hello -- I'm new here, and hoping to meet many of you soon! I want to multi-boot and play with three distros for a machine that would most likely always be a workstation, not a server. It would be for numerical work and not involve large or many audio or video files. It happens that the smaller the SCSI drive, the better the performance, and of course the smallest, fastest sizes available for SCSI are 18G and 32G. I'm planning to buy a matched pair of drives in order to spread the partitions for each distro across the two drives. Two questions: 1. I'd like to use use 2x18, but in your opinion, do I need 2x32? 2. Do you think 15000 rpm will be noticeably snappier than 10000 rpm? I don't think it'll tell you if one of the voltage lines goes low under load or something. If it doesn't pass those tests, though, you'll know it's bad. Also, open the PS case and look for leaking capacitors. If you find any leakage, then you know you have a problem. I would just throw out the PS at that point, but you could probably replace the capacitors. -- Rich P.S.: I mean to post an update to my screen-blanking-while-watching-movies problem. The PIII chips are fixed clocks, you can't change the multiplier on them (like you could on the celerons). At least that's what I remember. As for a trade, I've got a suspect motherboard with a pair of PIII 450s (or so, I can't remember right now) that I'd be willing to sell/trade. I think the only thing I sorta maybe looking for is a really good sound card to use with Linux. My DELL Precision 610MT (dual PIII Xeon 550) has a crappy builtin sound card (which I can't get to work with ALSA) and I'm not happy with the Avance ALS4000 card I have either. I'll try to make the next thursday night meeting and bring stuff for trade/sell. John
