That got me thinking about one guy who'd been at several meetings, and graduated maybe 2 years ago, though I don't think he was an engineering major. He had a legendary appetite and I think he moved to Nashua. I'm pretty sure his name had 2 syllables and started with 'S'. I keep thinking "Salman", but I'm pretty sure that's wrong. Information for Linux newbies?

As i mentioned at the meeting this past week I am going to be giving a seminar for linux newbies and would like to pull from people that know better then i do on what i should teach people. What i would like to know is: What are some things that you wish you had known as a newbie? Think back to your very first linux install and any short-cuts, tips, tricks, and gatcha's that would make peoples first experience easier. There is a lot of windows resentment after the slow trainwreck that is vista, so lets see if we can get a few new converts! P.S. one of the big concerns for a few people that i have talked to has been games, if anyone has a list of new-ish games that work or any tips specific to making the most recent generation work under linux, that would make things much easier ;)

Here I am begging again.

I have not been making the meetings. That does not mean my SUN ULTRA1 running Aurora Linux can no longer create 'interesting' problems. This time the second SUN ULTRA running Gentoo is in cahoots. I have a new SAMSUNG SyncMaster flat screen monitor. I have attached this monitor via a Belkin SUN adapter to my ULTRA1's. It does not work!! The monitor flashes a little square window saying something about "Not optimum mode". It feels that it has not been configured correctly. The buttons on the right of the monitor, which are there to set it up, also do not work with the SUN's is attached. The monitor works fine with PC type machinery. The Belkin worked fine with a regular old tube monitor. (I have not dug out the old monitor to check whether it still works. I suspect it does.) Anybody have any ideas? FiOS & PONs

As a followup to a discussion we had after the WLUG meeting, here are some good pages to read about how FiOS works. Verizon is using Passive Optical Networking, either BPON or GPON depending on the CO. The downstream side is shared, since by its very nature a PON's downstream direction is broadcast on a single wavelength--the light goes from the OLT to every customer's ONT on the PON "tree". For privacy each customer's downstream traffic is "encrypted" so only the intended ONT/customer can decrypt it. The upstream side is shared via TDMA since only one customer's ONT can trasmit at a time on the single upstream wavelength "up the tree" towards to root of the PON where the OLT lives...each ONT gets a "time slot" for upstream transmissions. I'd like to hear more about ZFS. As you know there was a previous presentation on ZFS as well, so it would be nice to cover some new ground. I'd like to see some ZFS in action. Wireless mesh network question

HI guys, I am planning to setup a wireless mesh network at a ham radio event in June. Each mesh node will consist of two Linksys WRT54GLs, much like the demo I showed at a recent WLUG meeting. One of the WRT54GLs will be on channel 6 and carry mesh network traffic. The other one will be on channel 1 and allow generic wifi devices access to the mesh network. It seems like there would be an interference problem if every node allowed wifi access on channel 1. Should this be 4 different wifi channels? It is possible for a user to be within radio range of multiple of them simultaneously. Thoughts? I've never setup a wireless network before and could use your advice. These mesh nodes will be placed outside in weatherproof enclosures with battery power. Thanks! STM8 blue pill boards and programmer

Guys, I've got some STM8 bluepill boards and a spare knock off ST-Linkv2 programmer if anyone is interested. I was playing around with them this weekend and the lack of a decent IR Library meant that my interest has waned. They're cheap cheap chear, and interesting as a way to learn more low level programming. I can give you my linux notes if you like too! Or if you know of a library for STM8 that does both send/receive of IR codes, I'd love to hear about it. I'd trade for an AVR ISP programmer instead if anyone has one, since I'm now more interested in ATtiny 85/84/88/841 boards these days. I won't be able to make meetings (unless maybe if you have one the 16th of this January) for a while though, so we'd have to arrange a meetup or something. Cheers! John
