Reminder: WLUG Meeting, Thurs Aug 14 - 7:00 PM

Hi Everybody, This is a friendly reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting on Thursday, August 14, 2003, at 7:00 PM in Olin Hall on the WPI campus. Go into Olin Hall's front door, to the top of the stairs, and we'll be in the big lecture hall on the left. I'll be addressing the group at this meeting, and the topic will be the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP). Come and learn how to use your old, potentially obsolete hardware as a graphics terminal connected to a more powerful server. I'll demonstrate (live!) how a Pentium 90 with 48 MB of memory and a 10 Mbps ethernet connection could be used effectively as an LTSP client, running any Linux program that is installed on the server. I've also got a couple of those Linux Format magazines for raffle (one with a CD, the other with a DVD). I'll have sodas and cookies also for refreshments. After the meeting, we'll make our monthly pilgrimage to the Boynton Restaurant for pizza and beers. All are welcome to attend. There is no admission fee for admittance to a WLUG meeting. Geoffrey has been using this software as part of the video game design club which meets after school. The talk will include a live demo of the Scratch software. Future WLUG meeting dates posted

HI Everybody, I've just posted the meeting dates for the first half of 2003 on the WLUG website. I've also extended an invitation to Jon 'Maddog' Hall to come to speak at a future WLUG meeting, and he has accepted our invitation. He'll visit during our February 20, 2003 meeting. Maddog travels alot and there was no way I could get him to come sooner (we tried). Remember that the Install Fest is only 2 weeks away! I haven't received any e-mails from prospective installees, but that doesn't surprise me since we still have 2 weeks until the event. Nonetheless, please start telling people about this event - advertise it on the WPI campus and tell all your friends! REMINDER: Meeting Wednesday, May 16th, 7:00 PM

Hi everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held in Kinnicutt Hall (a.k.a the usual place) at WPI at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 16h. The topic for discussion will be the practical use of IPCHAINS. What does that mean? This meeting, Doug Waud and I will present to you ways to use IPCHAINS to implement a firewall. This is not theory, this is practice...what to type, what it does, and why. This talk will build on the more detailed information presented by Bob Ziegler at our last meeting. Doug will start with a presentation of the simpler case of getting a firewall up which supports masquerading (that is, getting multiple machines on your home network to share one IP address, as you would for cable modem, for example), e-mail, and browsing. I will follow up with more detailed examples of IPCHAINS code from my own firewall script for allowing certain services through the firewall to the home network. Although firewalling is a complex topic, we're hoping to distill out of that complexity enough information so that a person can get started toward implementing a secure firewall. Hi Tim, I think the issue with WPI has been inconsistent room bookings, especially in May due to the number of large events taking place. Now that those are over it should be relatively* easy to get a recurring reservation in for one of the campus center meeting rooms on a monthly basis. Happy to work with the events office and see what'll work.
