I choose RAID1 over RAID5 because I only had space for two drives, and I only had an HPT302 with dual channels, so I put one disk on each channel for maximum peformance. If I had more money and a 3ware controller, I probably would have gone for RAID5 on my data, since it has a size/cost advantage over RAID1. I would NEVER go for RAID0 for my data, too much potential for data loss. Even with backups. In my case, I've got a pair of 9gb SCSI disks, and I currently boot off one. My plan has always been to mirror the two disks so that if I lost one, I could still boot. My data is all on a pair of 120gb IDE drives, which are mirrored, and which have saved me from ugly restores, because I noticed that one disk had dropped out and I was able to just re-mirror without any major impact. I usually figure out which chipset I want, first, and then narrow my search to motherboards with that chipset. If you're looking at regular ATX motherboards, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find one that *didn't* have onboard FireWire and Gigabit Ethernet. Re: Uptime!

A branch for my company has one remaining Solaris box that keeps up a service or two with a ridiculous uptime and they recently built a new facility. In a meeting we were discussing the move plan for their entire IT kit and they asked me about the feasibility of moving the Solaris box across town on an UPS so they wouldn't have to shut it down. I kindly asked them to reconsider because while they might keep power applied for the whole ride it'd be unlikely that the disks would survive the trip. 64 bit architectures have been supported for a rather long time in Linux, depending on the arch. If you're compiling a new kernel, I would suggest the 2.6 series (2.6.5 is the current version). It has a lot of improvements and is much speedier. I'm not sure which 64 bit arch you're talking about, but you may need patches to get the kernel fully stable. There are seperate sets of PPC/PPC64, Alpha and Sparc64 patches. There are probably some out there for ia64 (Itanium) and x86-64 (Athlon64) as well. Would you care to elaborate? The memory ordering around byte accesses might have been because the Alpha was designed to be both little endian and big endian. So were the MIPS chips. While many vendors supported only big endian (Motorola, SPARC, etc.) DEC had been supporting little endian in their PDP-11s, VAX, MIPS and Alphas for data compatibility. DEC supported little endian because it was cheaper electronically to have the data held in that fashion. Sun made much fun of DEC for years having Unix systems that were little endian instead of big endian like "real workstations". I kept asking them about these "Intel things" which were little endian too. Sun sneered at me and told me that "Intel chips were not used in real computers".....that is until they ported Solaris to Intel and tried to mix them into their network. Then I took real glee in asking them how they had data compatibility across NFS between SPARC and Intel. As I said, you are the first to mention to me these bad decisions.
