Correct, Keith's server is not configured to current best security practices. His server has what is called "upward referrals" turned on. https://www.dns-oarc.net/oarc/articles/upward-referrals-considered-harmful I believe what you want at a minimum is: additional-from-cache no; Also, it sounds like you are using your DNS server for two functions: caching for internal clients, and authoritative for your domain name(s). If so you probably should isolate both functions: "If your nameserver is both authoritative and caching, you really should separate the two functions. Caching nameservers are susceptible to poisoning and other types of attacks. You don't necessarily need separate hardware for each. You might need to use separate IP addresses, or possibly configure the authoritative nameserver to use an external address while the caching nameserver uses an internal address." VNC performance

Hi All, I remember some time ago talking with Andy, and others about VNC performance at a wlug meeting. I remember that setting the depth 8 will help performance, as well as disabling the wallpaper. I am running the server on windows, and the client on a linux machine. VNC's site has info for disabling wallpaper, but it seems to involve editing a registry file. When i try to do so, i get an access denied message, because that file is read only. Can someone help me out here? I really know very little about windows. On the client side, the option '-depth 8' doesn't seem to do very much i get '16 bits per pixel'. If anyone knows of any other methods for speeding up VNC, please post. Thanks, --Brad

I run OpenWrt at work and at home, it is a very nice piece of work, never had a lockup. GIMP tutorials

A couple of WLUG members had been interested in GIMP a few months back. A presentation I gave to the group last Fall may have been effective that it could have been, since we couldn't get the big monitors working in the meeting room. But now while looking for one piece of info, I came across this in article Linux Haxor: "50 Tutorials To Get You Started With Gimp." http://www.linuxhaxor.net/2009/02/09/50-tutorials-to-get-you-started-with-g… Some of these tutorials seem to be concerned with specific special effects, but others, such as "Using and Manipulating Layers with Gimp" and "Retouching hair and eye (video)" might be of interest to non-artist persons, and to those who want to work with photos they have uploaded from digital camera. reboot problem

At the meeting before last, I asked about a problem I'm having with the computer occasionally going to a black screen with no disk activity on reboot, right after the grub menu goes away. Overnight memtest showed no errors, I put a different vid card in, and still had the black screen problem. One of the things someone mentioned was to test the power supply. Recently, I had a few hard lockups and a couple of spontaneous reboots. So, how do I test my power supply, other than replacing it and seeing if the problem goes away? Or is that evidence enough to change it ASAP? According to lm-sensors, voltages are fine, and I've even sat and watched gkrellm for long periods of time - they look stable. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Greg
