To your first question, you can get your list of installed packages on Ubuntu by running "apt list --installed" and piping that to a file and copying that off somewhere safe. You'll likely have to strip that file a bit. Then once you've got that file, on your cleanly installed system you can enumerate over that file with a bash for loop and call "apt install *package*" To your second question, I'm sure we've got an R nerd around here.. They began leveraging large language models against... any data set as I understand it. There were a few papers that set the world on fire with their implementations. Academia was raided for questionably sourced corpus for commercial use veiled in community gain. I've been wrenching on stable diffusion API for a few weeks, as a former professional photographer it is shocking to me the quality you can get from very little input and common COTS GPUs. Haven't touched any of the SaaS cloud inferencing services that have come out in this gold rush but they can do quite a lot more with the datacenter class GPU grunt. I was watching the /var/log/auth.log on fcx1, my cloudy-VPN, as fools tried to guess passwords for users that don't even exist. No worries, they can't even guess user names, my passwd is good. Then I saw the same IP try to guess a password for root, over and over. Oh oh. I forgot that one. They guessed a login id. Enough! I remembered Tim talking about using fail to ban. I don't know anything about it but I guessed how to spell it and apt-get install fail2ban It is more configuration than I expected, but I'll figure it out. I thought, no hurry, there is zero chance of guessing the root password because you can't log in as root over ssh. Just to be sure I "su -" on the laptop and "ssh fcx1". To my horror it let me log on as root (with password, of course). I thought that was blocked by deep world-wide default! I don't remember why I thought that. Maybe it was a decade ago and on a different distribution. I am using Debian. Does anyone know a quick and easy way to make it so? Brian, I'm new to Wlug; the last meeting was my first. It was nice to interact with everyone that was there and look forward to attending future gatherings, from some of the emails that have been circulating it sounds like BtrFS will be the next topic. I am not a hands on user of Linux, I joined to try and grow my understanding of the technology itself. If you are looking for more (popular) productivity, try Blender for video editing. I only watch some of the first part of the video and I remember it being pretty good.
