We definitely have plenty of parking, it's just that visitors may have to plan ahead as it's not designed like a shopping plaza with massive parking lots in front of storefronts. I also hope the town will do more to invest in transit so car traffic and parking demand are reduced. I hope not. Even if I rarely attend meetings, I appreciate everyone and everything that happens in WLUG. Recently soimeone I know by correspondence, apparently a nuclear physicist, has had problems with his aging Mac, and contacted me for help since he knows I build my own computers. He' wants to build his own, and install a Linux OS. He is in the US but not local. I recommended some parts for a new build for him, but also recommended that he find a LUG near him and contact them, etc. Is there a directory of LUGs that he can consult? Are the LUGs in contact with each other? If not, that should have been happening right along. I have one issue of my own going on in a prog I have here that I need help with --just a stupid glitch in a text file that should be easy to find, but the text file is HUGE, yet I don't know how to write the correct commands in order to find the probable bad characters in this file and correct them. It would probably be easy for someone, but... I should write this up and send it in case someone can easily solve this. I hope our LUG and the others are not planning to expire anytime soon. But somethings you can do to help is to give us more information. Like: cat /proc/mdstat mdadm -E /dev/sd... or /dev/hd... depending on whether your SATA or IDE drives. Basically, use the devices you got from the /proc/mdstat output as your basis. Give us this output, and we should be able to help you more. John

"Quick" is in the eye of the beholder. Yes, the Alpha tended to access data in 32 bit "chunks" to get it into the registers. Being a RISC processor it was not as rich in data access on a byte level. On the other hand other CISC processors also accessed data on a 32-bit level, just that their instruction sets used microcode to make it look like they were only accessing a byte. The trade off was in executing multiple RISC instructions to one microcoded CISC instruction. Would this bother a kernel developer writing a couple of lines of assembly language down at the very lowest level of the kernel....probably. The latest ubuntu appears to have ivtv support built into the kernel and the lirc code built into the kernel. The former is a driver for the hauppauge tv cards the the latter is for the remote. Until very recently ivtv and lirc were a challenge to get working because it meant you had to recompile your kernel every time something changed. Other challenges for old tube-style TV is to get it to display to the TV correctly. I believe you need a special X11 driver for this. I did set this up at my place just to test it. With my setup using comcast, i had a serial cable plugged into the mythtv box and the cable box. I was able to change the channels on the digital cable box. There is significant lag -- i mean more so than lag than usual digital cable. Since i don't want anything that comes through on the digital channels i just setup the analog side to go to my mythtv box. A friend of mine has a nice LCD HDTV with mythtv setup (although he only gets standard def TV); he's TV goes into sleep mode with it's been inactive and the mythtv remote will wake the TV up; so he only needs the one remote. > But this just shows how complicated it can be to setup a simple > setup. The remotes that come with the hauppauge PRV cards are well supported under linux.
