On the other hand other CISC processors also accessed data on a 32-bit level, just that their instruction sets used microcode to make it look like they were only accessing a byte. The trade off was in executing multiple RISC instructions to one microcoded CISC instruction. Would this bother a kernel developer writing a couple of lines of assembly language down at the very lowest level of the kernel....probably. I found a phenomenal one called the Altova XML Suite which has a free 'home' version (which I've not played with). The version I used was the enterprise one, and it did everything I wanted in an editor, including giving me lots of graphical feedback and it managed schemas and stylesheets in a clean and well organized blend of graphical interpretations and text. The non-free version, however, is very non-free (~$1000 for the 'pro' suite and ~$1800 for the 'enterprise' suite.) I've also used, with some good success, Architag XRay XML editor which had a very good, entirely text based suite that was free. I did have problems that some of the more quirky and poorly defined parts of the schema I was writing worked differently in XRay's native interpreter than in Xerces (or was it Xalan ... it was a little while ago), which I was using to do some validation. I've also heard that oXygen is supposed to be good (although, they didn't have a demo last I looked, so I haven't looked any closer than that.) I'm very interested if others have had good experience with any free (or less non-free) tools. You can find out more about Altova at www.altova.com. Hope that is somewhat helpful ... Fifteen years ago we were trying to convince our boss to take a chance on replacing that sparc 20 with a linux machine. If back then these vulnerabilities had come to light it would have made our jobs really hard. Thankfully linux has had a decade to prove itself in the server room. At this point the pendulum as swung the other direction. When we have to deploy a windows box we need to think about how it's going to fit into our nice cohesive unix environment. I'd argue that these revelations and the many more to come can be demonstrated that the FOSS community cares about the quality of the software out there and is continuing to improve it. Yeah, this stuff is public, but the openness of our community almost invariably means that lots of dirty laundry ends up on the line for everybody to see. Microsoft has managed to shit show their patching operation so many times it's an easy target to FUD in the other direction. At one point, the UNIX/Exchange battle that goes on between the two servers was so screwed up that all my email was showing up as literal forwards from me to me in my UNIX inbox. I raged at the helpdesk until they accepted that I did not now, nor did I ever want, to even have an exchange account. It took some fighting but I got them to delete my exchange account completely, and my UNIX mail has worked fine ever since. Some of the arguements I've read on SSD reliability are quite interesting. If you do the math on how much data you need to write to destroy an SSD with proper (note!) wear levelling, it's really quite high. But I think the real key is to write data to them in blocks of 512 bytes as much as possible, and to not write smaller amounts if at all possible.
