I don't want to join the endian wars. So I'll comment on something else. Stratus did not support Itanium because they follow rather than lead the market. When a replacement for PA-RISC was considered at Stratus we did look at Itanium. I recall studying the FW then called "EFI" around 2003 when I was in the VOS group. For the in-house VOS OS, Stratus would need compilers for PL/I and C and a modified linker to get to Itanium. Stratus never made this investment. What the VOS group did was to port to x86. Today VOS is still a 32-bit OS that runs on Motorola 68K, i860, PA-RISC and x86. This is unlikely to ever change for VOS as the compiler and linker tech leads have left Stratus. For the other three OS's supported by Stratus, Windows, Linux, VMware ESX, outsiders, not Stratus, would or would not be porting their OS to Itanium. (As was the case for amd64). Since the Stratus value add is to take applications coded to run on commodity HW and make the apps highly reliable by running on Stratus HW, Stratus would not move to Itanium until the customers already were developing to that platform. -- One more comment on a different topic: > >I personally play around with ATTiny85 and ATTiny84 MCUs when I get a >chance. Here's the details: Date & Time: June 9th, 2016 @ 7pm Location: WPI Atwater-kent Rm 232 Topic: Back from the Dead: Projects that maddog is working on, and why you should care Abstract: Only a month after a massive heart attack maddog will be talking about some of the projects he is working on: (1) Rebooting the Linux Professional Institute (and why you should care) (2) Selling small computers in Brazil (and why you should care) (3) Creating jobs for the jobless and help for the clueless (and why you should care) Who is Jon "Maddog" Hall? Jon "maddog" Hall is the Chairman of the Board of the Linux Professional Institute, and the President of Linux International. Since 1969, Mr. Hall has been a programmer, systems designer, systems administrator, product manager, technical marketing manager, author and educator. He currently works as an independent consultant, and is involved with bringing environmentally friendly computing to emerging marketplaces as well as working on performance and educational issues with Free and Open Source Software via the Linaro Association. He is also closely aligned with LeMaker, a design center located in Shengen, China. While not a founding member of LPI, maddog helped formulate some of the concepts and donated personal money to allow the first 200 tests be tested for psychometrics. Mr. Hall has worked for such companies as Western Electric Corporation, Aetna Life and Casualty, Bell Laboratories, Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), VA Linux Systems, SGI, Futura Networks (Campus Party) and Linaro. Mr. Hall has taught at Hartford State Technical College (HSTC), Merrimack College and Daniel Webster College. While at HSTC his students gave him the nickname of "maddog", and he developed the skills necessary for talking to university students over pizza and beer. Mr Hall has worked on many different operating systems (MFT, MVT, VS1, VS2, MVS, CP-67, VM/CMS, RSTS/E, RSX-11M, CP/M) but concentrated on Unix systems since 1980 and Linux systems since 1994, when he first met Linus Torvalds and correctly recognized the commercial importance of Linux and Free and Open Source Software. Mr. Hall obtained a DEC "Alpha" system for Linus Torvalds and organized and engineering team which helped the Linux community to port Linux to the world's fastest 64-bit microcomputer. Since 2006 Mr. Hall has been working on Project Cauā, which will large numbers of high-tech jobs allowing students who could not afford to attend university to both attend university and get real-life job experience. Mr. Hall is the author of numerous magazine and newspaper articles, many presentations and one book, "Linux for Dummies". He currently writes a blog for Linux Pro Magazine. Mr. Hall has consulted with the governments of China, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Brasil as well as the United Nations and many local and state governments on the use of Free and Open Source Software. Mr. Hall serves on the boards of several companies, and several non-profit organizations. He is currently very active with the University of Sao Paulo's Centro Interdisciplinar Em Tecnologias Interativas (CITI), acting as a member of their advisory board. Mr. Hall has traveled to over 100 countries, many more than one time, speaking on the benefits of Open Source Software having received his BS in Commerce and Engineering from Drexel University (1973), and his MSCS from RPI in Troy, New York (1977). Well, so far it's not been a problem, although I keep a close watch on suspicious activity. (You'll notice entries for hosts allow and hosts deny. So far that seems to be pretty effective, although I do notice twits trying to access and being denied): hosts allow = 192.168.3.0/255.255.255.224 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0 128.119.216.0/255.255.255.0 216.175.212.192/255.255.255.240 hosts deny = all # <- no other machines can access Perhaps you could suggest conf options that allows [incoming] connections, but don't broadcast availability (i.e. is 'invicible' to all but people that know that that machine is a smb server). From time to time I used a USB Ethernet port: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/shop/usb-to-ethernet-adapter Generally they are about 25 USD. You might be able to find them on Ebay or other places for less than that. You might as well get a USB 3.0, since it will work with USB 2.0 ports, but USB 2.0 will not support 1 Gbit/second, whereas USB 3.0 will. On the other hand if the networking flow is not 1 Gbit/second then USB 2.0 might work fine.
