new/old toy soon? (yet another Gigabyte GA-NNN looming)

Thanks for the support and keeping the list alive. Perhaps too alive (I can rant/ramble!) Are Gigabyte motherboards OK? I've only had one so far. Now dying perhaps. Looking ahead..... since I upgrade "combo style" (all ram and cpu attached/included) I'm gonna look at (days from now) a used motherboard+cpu+ram+beast video+beast fan, hope it fits under my hood, dude speaks well about his retired GIGABYTE GA-870A-UD3 SKT.AM3 AMD870+SB850 4XDDR3-1866, IEEE1394 USB3, SATA3, RAID, ATX plus cpu,ram, and even fan info on this BEAST of a fan, should i be scared? https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-U9B-SE2-CPU-Cooler/dp/B002VT1GZ6 doug> I find it cool that a machine/mb that old, is still way more than I need. Equipment up for grabs...

WLUG, I have some stuff that is looking for a new home. If you're interested in it, I can bring it to the January WLUG meeting or arrange shipping... :) Here's what I've got: o For whoever is interested: Cabletron MRX-2 10Base-T hub This beast has 12 10Mb ports, but port 6 is bad. Gravis Ultrasound Max sound card This is a 16-bit card. I cannot find the CD for it. VESA Local Bus motherboard Includes a P90 CPU Has 2 VLB slots, 4 16-bit slots, 2 8-bit slots. RAM (I forget if this has 32MB or 64MB) Diamond Viper VLB video card VLB I/O card This should go with the motherboard, since the motherboard dates back to just before the I/O stuff was built-in. o For sale or trade: DSL Modem WESTELL ADSL modem, model # 36R515. Has power cable, Ethernet cable, and instructions. o What I am looking for: one PCMCIA ethernet network interface. 10Mb minimum, but I certainly wouldn't turn down a 10/100... :) The stuff I have is available as-is. The motherboard, video, sound card and I/O card are known-working as of March 2001. The DSL modem is something my mother bought, decided she didn't want, so she passed it to me. I can't get DSL where I live, so I thought maybe someone else could use it. I have no way of knowing if it works. If anyone is interested in this stuff, I could bring it to a WLUG meeting. I knew this topic would be of interest to people! As I'm writing this Gmail is yelling at me to buy more storage.. For me the "self" is the level of control I have over it. Lately ISP's have gone out of their way to make it very hard to host services on your own networks and expose them to the internet. Tim. Some people take pride in having the latest. I run an internet host, with name server (by definition), together with smtpd and httpd, on a machine with a Tandy monitor, all bought used. (Ask your grandfather what's a Tandy?)

As I recall, Itanium was Intel's attempt to bi-furcate the market and keep 32bit for desktops and such, and to make their 64bit systems for workstations and such a seperate product so they could take more control of the motherboard, bios, etc. Then AMD came out with the AMD64 64-bit extenstions to the Intel 386 (486?) instruction set, since they had an architectural license to the ISA, so they just extended it and started shipping cheaper CPUs and chipsets that could easily suport more than 4gb of RAM, without requiring people to do major re-compiles of their software. Especially since it would support 32bit applications in a 64bit OS without *any* recompile needed. They ate Intel's lunch. Which is why the Pentium 4 (I think) was such a monster chip in terms of CPU GHz and heat, because they were trying to catchup with the Opteron and other AMD chips. I think that "TruCluster" was a layered product on top of "Tru64". I think that was slightly after my time at DEC also.
