Hey Gang, Enough people have reached out to me privately that they want to attend remotely, that I think it makes sense to do the meeting virtually this month. Tonight I think it warrants a conversation about where we'd like to do physical meetings. They are going to happen, I'd like to pick a spot that works for everybody. WLUG Meeting: Thurs Dec 12 7:00 PM

Hi everybody, I wanted to send this meeting announcement out early for a change. :-) Our next WLUG meeting will actually be a joint meeting with WLUG and the Worcester County IEEE Computer Society. We'll hold the meeting in Olin Hall room 107 (we've been there before) since it seats more people. We're anticipating a larger than normal turnout for this meeting due to the showing of the documentary entitled "Revolution OS" (on DVD!). This documentary runs for 1 hour and 25 minutes. No expertise in Linux is required to understand this documentary. Revolution OS tells the inside story of the hackers who rebelled against the proprietary software model and Microsoft to create GNU/Linux and the Open Source movement. This documentary features interviews with Linus Torvalds, Richard Stallman, Bruce Perens, Eric Raymond, Brian Behlendorf, Michael Tiemann, Larry Augustin, Frank Hecker, and Rob Malda. I've just purchased a few items for the raffle which should arrive prior to the meeting date. The items for raffle are: o a copy of the Revolution OS DVD o a Revolution OS tee shirt o a Revolution OS coffee mug o a Revolution OS poster (11"x7") As always, light refreshments will be served at the meeting. I guess my email started this, so it is only fair to share. Tim hit it right on the head with scheduling being crazy for some involved. On my end, my family starts discussing if and how I make WLUG around Tuesday evening (for Thursday meeting). A decade ago I merely drove in WPI direction that evening after work (keys -> drive through -> WLUG) . Prior monthly meetings without a discussion / reminder / email have ended with two or less people showing up. Not a big vote for the meeting being 2nd Thursday no matter what. For that reason WLUG likely needs some remind or "buzz" (email, discussion, reminder, ...) the week of meeting (even for a roundtable) . I would not push for WLUG using a paid (or free) 3rd party site for who is / isn't going. First, not sure I would use /login to it. Second, if 3 people or more show, it's a meeting (think 2 or less hampers discussion). . I am sooooo past only going if John Smith goes... As to which evening, Wednesdays compete with three other things, two fixed and one floating Wednesday. . Thursdays, the second (or any) would be my preference. I would vote for Tim's auto WLUG reminder. Also, possibly combined with an ICS type meeting invite email. Choosing to approve meeting once could get it on everyone's electronic calendar perpetually. Hi Tim, Sorry for the late reply. To comment about a "back to basics" meeting. I think that is a terrific idea. I would go further to say not just one, but from time to time having more of them again also, or maybe a small portion of some meetings. It might welcome in a wider range of members to WLUG. Upcoming meetting reminder

We have a meeting coming up on Thursday, February 11th in that meeting room next to the Morgan Hall dining center. It is very close to the former Access Grid room where we used to meet. If anybody is interested in leading the discussion or giving a presentation, please let me know, or just bring it to the meeting. If I know in advance, I'll announce it on the website - this often attracts more people to the meeting. Our last meeting was rather lightly attended, perhaps because I didn't get the reminder out in enough time. I pulled together a talk about how I used libHaru to generate PDF output from a program that I wrote. I could bring in another program (Perl script) that I wrote to get data out of a ham radio related piece of test gear. It is the very first native Linux program in the world to talk to this device. I know because I asked for (and received!!!) a previously unpublished specification from the vendor. Sweet! I will be releasing this program under the GPL v3 shortly. I'm looking forward to seeing lots of people at the next meeting. Of course, we'll go out after the meeting for pizza and socializing. Hey Everybody! NO MEETING TOMORROW! Meeting next Thursday (11/19/2020)

REMINDER: Upcoming meeting Thursday Oct 9th

Hi everybody, Our next WLUG meeting is coming up soon. This e-mail is a friendly reminder of that fact. This meeting will be held in a totally new location on the WPI Campus in Worcester, MA USA. The location is called the "Access Grid" room, and it is located in the "lower wedge" of Morgan Hall. Detailed directions appear on the recently updated WLUG website. I'll try to post a few of my penguin signs to guide you. I'm told that this room has some great projection equipment and can hold approx. 20-25 people without a problem. At this meeting, Doug Waud will talk about and demonstrate some genealogical Linux software called Lifelines. As I don't expect this to take the entire duration of the meeting, I'll also bring my laptop and demonstrate XFce version 4, a lightweight desktop for Linux. In addition, I was asked to spend a few minutes describing a couple of commands for the new Linux users of the group. We can also explore the capabilities of the new meeting room and make plans for its use at future meetings. After the meeting, we'll go out for pizza and beer at the Boynton Restaurant. See ya later!
