I just wish there was a better way to actually shrink ZFS filesystems (even if done as any offline process) without jumping through all kinds of hoops. Hey Gang! Location: Technocopia, 44 Portland St. Worcester MA. Date: November 21st, 2024 Time: 7PM Topic: Going rogue. I know, a flashy title to draw you in! Let's be frank, the digital landscape is looking a bit bleak right now. More and more, I'm finding myself not that interested in posting anything about myself or my family because I don't need some AI algorithmically categorizing me. Even this email I'm sure is being analyzed by google.. gmail is free for a reason.. I had an idea and that was this. Would people be interested in a mastodon server running inside a tailscale mesh? Or some other service, like IRC or https://revolt.chat/ or I'm sure other people have other great ideas. My plan is to show off a pi running mastodon and/or revolt with tailscale. I'd love to hear people's thoughts about this. If people even think the tailscale stuff is needed. So that's my thought for what we might talk about. I'll cover this in more depth when I give the talk, but any RAID algorithm that needs to initialize every block of the device is going to hurt performance on SSDs. There is some question about the durability/reliability of the drives, and some of those concerns are valid, others aren't. If you are diligent about backups, or if the disk just holds the OS, I wouldn't worry too much about RAID. HTH, Jeff

Consider not only what the weather will be at the start of the meeting, but at the end when folks are departing. Sometimes you get burned when the predicted weather fails to materialize, but that's life in New England. Please feel free to ask any linux questions you have on this list, and please do come to the next meeting where we have a good group of people who are willing to step up and help people. I have a couple of RaspberryPis I run for various things, along with my main server I run at home for backups and file storage. Oct 24, 2002: Install Fest !

HI Everybody, I have reserved the HIggins Labs discovery classroom (HL218?) for our upcoming install fest! This is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 24, which is the night which was scheduled for our next WLUG meeting. I thought that the first week of B term would work out well for the WPI undergraduates. In place of the meeting, we'll have the install fest from 6:30 - 9:30 PM (yes, the time is earlier for this occasion). I will update the website shortly. If you know people who are interested in having us help them with a Linux installation, please ask them to send me an e-mail so I can keep track. We can probably accomodate folks who want us to configure something but I'd like to give priority to installations. Voyeurs are most welcome to watch and learn! Would somebody from WPILA please post this information on some appropriate WPI newsgroups, bulletin boards, and the like? I'd like to give priority to WPI students and allow "outsiders" if we have enough space. Remember, we have another install fest in February which is open to everybody.
