Hello, My name is Forrest I am a gamer and a Linux enthusiast that mainly uses a Arch Based distro called Manjaro. My friend reached out to the group for me and then emailed and told me about it so I thought I would create a account and introduce myself. I would also like to say my level of understanding is probably more on the beginners level of things and have been learning slowly and would like to learn more about other things like raspberry pis and servers since I recently obtained a server from a family members work because they upgraded, I will also leave specs of the two custom built computers I own and the name of the server I have down below, I look forward to meeting you all next meeting. I was hoping to attend, but it looks like I will not be able to. I hope it will be recorded because I, too, would like to learn about emacs. Also, I have two questions: 1. I am running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. When I update to ver. 20 or 22, I would prefer to do a "clean" re-install, but I have a question. Does that mean I must get a list of all my installed software and re-install them one at a time after I upgrade the OS? If so, is there an easy way for me to get the list? 2. I have been learning to use the software language R. I have a couple of questions and I would like to hear from anyone who has R experience. Thank You. Those "modern" VPNs are used for many reasons. Here are a couple: - To appear to servers/services that you are physically located in a different geographical area. This can help you bypass geographically restricted content, such as watching sports programs that content owners don't want you to see based on where you live (local sports broadcast blackouts). Or trick hotels into giving you a better price--yes, hotels can hike the rates they present to you if they think you are nearby--assuming you need last-minute accomodations while you are away on vacation. - To hide your real IP address from servers and/or hide your browsing from intermediaries (your ISP for example) for privacy. This could be so you can avoid being tracked and having your browsing habits sold to advertisers (something your ISP can easily do--SSL does not hide DNS queries although that is changing with the availability of DNS-over-HTTPS and similar), to hide from authorities/copyright enforcers, or for life-and-death reasons (hide from unfriendly governments.)

I asked the engineering manager about the Itanium and what he remembered was there was a skunkworks project in ZKO that was trying to port Digital Unix to the Itanium, "Mostly because of the IP management constraints/restrictions from Intel." (his words). DEC already had the fastest microcomputer processor in the world (the Alpha), and we were not going to confuse our application base on what they should port to and support. And to show that I was not a RISC bigot (at least not at the time), I just smiled when I saw what AMD did to create their 64-bit instruction set. Right, you have to create your key and submit it to the organizers BEFORE the actual keysigning meeting, so that at the keysigning other people will have a copy of your public key fingerprint to compare with the copy of your key that they later download or get emailed to them. So we should have a PGP meeting first, then a keysigning party the next month or whatever.
