I've recently spent a small amount of time playing around with both the SuSe 8.2 Live Eval, and Knoppix 7-26-03, so I thought I'd pass along my observations. Both default you into KDE and have a similar selection of apps (Like OpenOffice, Mozilla, the GIMP etc). Knoppix happens to be based of Debian. There were a couple of things I liked about Knoppix. The first is that you don't have to go through all the YaST screens when you boot, Knoppix just boots right up to KDE and logs you on as user knoppix. The other neat thing about Knoppix is that you can save your configuration and home directory of the size you specify on a USB flash drive. With SuSE if you want to save your configuration/home dir it creates a 100MB file on your hard drive (and another 100MB for swap if you want). With Knoppix you can carry a cheap ($10 after rebate) 64MB USB flash drive around with you and a Knoppix CD and boot a PC into your personal environment without touching the hard disk. -----Original Message----- From: wlug-admin(a)mail.wlug.org [mailto:wlug-admin@mail.wlug.org] On Behalf Of Stephen C. When I saw that it was to be in Framingham, I changed my mind and thought it might be worth dropping in to see what's happening. Then I saw they are charging ten dollars admission. In that case, I want to know what's happening before I blow my weeks allowance. I could see Spiderman for that! The main attraction is Bob Davis, former CEO of Lycos and Terra Lycos, and currently a venture partner at Highland Capital Partners, will present Street Smart Lessons from the Front Lines of Business.  Bob will also be available following the presentation for a book signing of Speed Is Life Or in other words, unemployed yet suspiciously rich guy in suit, who thinks he's a technology guru even though he could not write the device driver for a lightbulb, promotes himself, his book, and his plan for YOU to get RICH using the revolutionary power of Positive Thinking^W^W The Internet^W^W buying his advice. The more I see, the less I feel I have in common with these people. Maybe we would have more fun joining with the Northampton Homebrew Beer Filter Users Group. We definitely have plenty of parking, it's just that visitors may have to plan ahead as it's not designed like a shopping plaza with massive parking lots in front of storefronts. I like the idea of doing the Asterisk/Telephony talk for Nov. Logan that would give you some time to polish your presentation, etc. I have no problem giving the talk on "Educational programs and toys that work with linux" for Dec that's a good lead into $GIFT_GIVING_HOLIDAY. I offered to either give a talk on home virtualization or ownCloud (or both) depending on people's interest (ownCloud is basically a privately hostable Dropbox solution).
