WLUG bbq thurs july9 7pm boylston MA

Announcing (with Tim's blessing/OK) our next meeting is the WLUG summer BBQ at my house ; 540 linden st, boylston ma. <= 20min from worc via 290, .....so many other ways to get here from north/190 ; east/495, etc. Thurs July 9 at or before 7pm. Food details later. BBQ's don't need a topic, but I would love to keep doing+learning a LITTLE with -- freeNAS : my own home server works enough to NOT wanna break it, but smbd isnt working yet ( want to share with win doze) -- other ZFS-able boxes (e.g. my junker/re-loadable PC has pc-bsd with issues, want it to catch ZFS snapshots over ssh for backups ..how hard could that be?) -- chainsaws, musical instruments, tricks+treats for golden retrievers and a cat (just kidding for the meeting, but now you know way too much about me) Maybe someone else wants to bring a tower/PC for abuse or argument e.g. loading something like the above top 2, then studying the result. Or not? What did I forget besides food? -doug also with wife's blessing, if I do all the work.

But it is also truthful that all these "events" --heartbleed, the bash problem, and now TLSv3 (oh yeah, it's called "POODLE") is adding to the FUD. The fact that I can look at sourcecode tips the balance in favor of FOSS for me certainly, and I assume for most people on this list. But that doesn't change the fact that the questions are out there. So people using/running FOSS in a non-hobby environment should be prepared to answer questions about it if we consider ourselves to be advocates. I don't think FOSS confidence is a silly discussion item for this group. --MCV.

Hi Tim, I am involved with a project to bring low cost Single Board Computers to Latin America. As part of this I am constantly evaluating SBCs for the project. I could give a talk on some of the SBCs on the market, how to evaluate them and how to make a choice between the ones you might want to purchase. Unfortunately I will not be able to do this until the June or July time frame. I have a new digital camera I haven't even used yet. I'd be more than happy to bring my camera. I'm curious to understand, will these be publicly viewable pictures, or *only* viewable to those who have your key? (P.S. I've never made a key before, so this is a good topic for me.) Something installed it on one (but only one) of my computers which means when I log on it takes a minute to time out and say: Cannot resolve network address for KDC in requested realm while getting initial credentials before letting me in. I've thought of asking why, but don't care enough since it eventually works. Maybe I'll learn something. I know that IP means Internet Protocol, but what is the A? http://www.freeipa.org/ does not seem to say, but Wikipedia spells it out. Identity - Policy - Audit Some sort of GUI front end to Kerberos? I'm not sure I want it, but I should know what it is if only so I can avoid it. I would listen to that. -- Keith

I'd say that cool new projects around a Pi would always be welcome, and blocking telemarketers and scammers *definitely* fits that criteria =) Also, as for the octoprint, we may have a 3d printer and octopi rig up and running in time for the next meeting (we're waiting on some a replacement for some defective parts) so we could certainly bring ours over across campus. Sorry for leaving that bit out.... Uptime/availability isn't that important, but backups are since RAID *is* my backup (plus rsync to other RAIDed systems for the most important data). With traditional disk drives, it hasn't been too expensive to slap a 2nd system drive in for RAID 1/mirroring. SSDs are much more expensive, so if as you say they are more reliable, perhaps I can forgo the expense of doing RAID on them.
