Topic for future meeting.

Hi all, I wanted to intorduce myself. I have been on the LUG list now for over a year, but 2 kids 22 mo and 5 mo old have kept me away from metings. I am by no means a speaker although I have given a presentation at conferences and a LUG. I know there is a constant call for topics. I was wondering if anyone was interested in one of the following 3 topics: 1) Linux Development on the Nokia 770. I have had one for a few months now and know quite a bit about it and the state of affairs. 2) Hacking NAS storage with the Kurobox (www.kurobox.com) An very interesting device with a sordid history 3) VERY tentitive. Developing Robotic applications on Linux for the iRobot Create. I should be able to get my hands on one of these along with some example code and show the capabilities of the iRobot Create (http://www.irobot.com/create) I could also combine 1 and 2 and talk of the general aspects of embedded Linux development. I have been active in this field for about 6 years now. Any takers? Thanks Brian

Meeting Dec 8th at 7pm: Topic: Personal RPZ

Hey Gang, Long time member Eric Martin has graciously stepped up to do another talk. This time it'll be about setting up a personal RPZ server. We all know we'll be setting lots of new devices up in the coming month... RPZ is basically a "spam" filter for your DNS. It works to keep your devices from gong to sites infected with malware and "jam the lock" of any existing mailware from getting back to it's command and control. Eric will give an overview and explain a quick and dirty on how to set one up. Time: 7pm Location: Campus Center Rm 301 (Haggland Rm. It's on the same floor as the Mid Century room we're normally in, only at the top of the stairs take a right instead of a left. We're still waiting for confirmation After that we'll head down to Tech Pizza. As usual snacks and refreshments will be provided. I've been exploring HTML5 3D scene rendering. It appears to make good use of gpgpu acceleration. WebGL and Three.js are amongst the more mature. http://threejs.org/ http://stemkoski.github.io/Three.js/ http://threejs.org/examples/ http://threejs.org/examples/#webgl_custom_attributes_points3 The speed of development and resulting performance is orders of magnitude better than historical methods. I am no expert, but it is a remarkable technology. I intend to use it to develop and make dynamic presentations. It is not specific to Linux, but it is supported there. Is it worth using a wlug session on this subject? Just a self-serving thought. Chuck Anderson demo'd a PS-RISC system running Debian Linux. I have a similar system that I am offering up for sale. Its an HP 9000 model J210 than has: -2 PA-RISC 120mhz processors -1 gig of memory -2 four gig HVD SCSI drives -SCSI CD-ROM -An extra 10/100 ethernet NIC card(there is already one built in) -VGA adapter(although as Chuck pointed out, the display card isn't supported yet under Linux) -an external HVD SCSI interface as well as an external SCSI-2 interface It all works and currently has a version of HP-UX 11 that I need to wipe before selling it. As stated before, there is a working Linux kernel for it and it would make a great server or at the very least, a great hobby system. $250 or best offer Reply if your interested. I was thinking of putting some low-res, but recognizable faces on the WLUG web site, to help us (i.e. me) to remember names. I am not sure why anyone would object to that unless it has something to do with the witness protection program, or running from the law. But I have neither camera nor write access to the web site, so it is not for me to say. -- Keith

Price Chopper is the place where you turn onto Highland Street to get to WPI. Turn onto Highland, going East. Go down to West Street (next traffic light), and turn left there (or the street before) and find a place to park in the next block or so. The cross street you come to is Institute Road, turn left there for a possible parking space, or use the campus map to locate parking lots. The Lower Wedge would be located west of West Street, and north of Institute Street. Entrance to the Lower Wedge is facing that square on the WPI map (a common) in front of building A and H, that has the x-shape thing in it. That's supposed to represent the walking paths across the common. Entrance is nearer to H than to A.
