Seeking someone to install SuSE Linux

Those of us who attended the meeting thought that his RedHat 9.0 might be too old for its installer to comprehend the external USB hard drive on which he had hoped to copy Linux, so I gave Mel the SuSE 9.3 Pro CDs which I had at the time, in the hope that he'd have a better time with the installation. Mel gave it a try at home but things are not working. Mel has offered to pay someone who would be willing to get Linux installed on his Thinkpad laptop (where Windows is also installed). John, My perspective was from working at Stratus. Continuum at the time was our flagship line of servers that ran on PA-RISC and with Itanium it was clear the end of the line for PA-RISC was coming. Bob Evans and others who were more intimately involved can probably explain it better, but I remember Stratus getting a couple Itanium development workstations and my recollection was that the engineers weren't impressed. It wasn't a fundamental improvement on PA-RISC as far as they could tell. Ultimately VOS was ported to Xeon and the rest is history. I'm *sure* someone somewhere is still happily running PA-RISC based Stratus servers, but I have to imagine that number dwindles each year. Personally I have a hypothesis that Intel had really put it's bets on Xeon and wasn't really that invested in Itanium. What it did do was get HP out of the HPC market. It's fair to say that Xeon based systems running Linux pretty much put the coffin nails in MIPS, PA-RISC and ultimately Sparc and likely a few others I don't know about and with it the various operating systems that didn't get ported to Xeon. We actually haven't done a round table in a while. David, I like your idea for the home automation / vision processing as well. I just went looking and there are 10+ companies that make linux based home automation products. I've messed with the the opencv stuff and my co worker is using it read his water meter and do OCR. Keith, it would be cool to have someone (other than me) talk about managing large amounts of data. Drop a line to your friend and see if they'd be willing to do a talk. I talked a bit about hadoop as well since I've been working with that. I could with some prep give a talk about hadoop if people were interested. I've also been playing with the parallel python stuff as well. My plan is to send out a reminder that the meeting is going to be next Thursday. It's a bit too soon to get anything put together on either of these topics, but we should talk them through next Thursday and see if anybody has more ideas as well. Thanks, Tim. I'm using the nouveau driver, and that also has issues if I switch inputs on my monitor (as in, my graphical display will cease to exist). How do others set this up? Topic for future meeting.

Hi all, I wanted to intorduce myself. I have been on the LUG list now for over a year, but 2 kids 22 mo and 5 mo old have kept me away from metings. I am by no means a speaker although I have given a presentation at conferences and a LUG. I know there is a constant call for topics. I was wondering if anyone was interested in one of the following 3 topics: 1) Linux Development on the Nokia 770. I have had one for a few months now and know quite a bit about it and the state of affairs. 2) Hacking NAS storage with the Kurobox (www.kurobox.com) An very interesting device with a sordid history 3) VERY tentitive. Developing Robotic applications on Linux for the iRobot Create. I should be able to get my hands on one of these along with some example code and show the capabilities of the iRobot Create (http://www.irobot.com/create) I could also combine 1 and 2 and talk of the general aspects of embedded Linux development. I have been active in this field for about 6 years now. Any takers? Thanks Brian
