WLUG's membership in BUG

Hi everybody, Last year around this time, an organization was formed called the Boston User Groups (http://www.bostonusergroups.com) WLUG was invited to participate. As a group, we decided to pay our $50/year membership fee to participate for the first year. Some of you might remember this meeting, where the general consensus was "OK, let's try it for a year and see how it goes". Our yearly membership dues are being requested by BUG. I had some questions about whether or not WLUG should continue its participation in BUG. I had a discussion with the WLUG members who attended the BBQ. Several of those people thought that the discussion should take place among the entire WLUG membership. The timing of BUG events is such that I'd like to settle this issue before our next WLUG meeting (ideally within the next week). Take a look at the BUG webpage as you consider my comments and those of other WLUG members. Please take note of the other groups who are current BUG members. There are 3 Linux groups, a Palm group, a Mac group, and some others, not to mention the wide variety of Microsoft related user groups. Given that Microsoft is a documented monopoly (a court said that, not just me), this distribution of member groups should not be a surprise to anybody. Some of the commentary below assumes familiarity with the contents of the BUG website. My initial question (if I recall correctly) was to wonder about what tangible benefit WLUG received for its $50 expenditure. a) BUG has a link to the WLUG website on its website b) WLUG had a table at last year's MegaMeeting and gave out literature advertising the group, its meetings, etc. c) I met some leaders of other regional user groups while eating free pizza, drinking free soda, and touring the US DataCenters facility in Marlboro, MA. d) I know that we got at least one new WLUG member from the MegaMeeting. Perhaps there were others, or folks who shortly thereafter joined the mailing list, but I have no way to know for sure. The BUG website also has a calendar of group activities onto which WLUG's activities were never placed. The calendar is designed for groups who meet, say, every 2nd Thursday of the month. WLUG's schedule is not as regular as that, and hence our information was not put onto the calendar after two requests by me. Rick Zach is the current BUG president. He recently sent an e-mail to the user group leaders (attached) wherein he describes some of the benefits of BUG membership. I also have personally spoken to Rick to make sure my information about BUG is correct so that I can present it fairly to the WLUG membership. My question to WLUG is: Do we as a group wish to continue our participation in BUG for $50/year ? Last meeting mention of connecting to DISPLAY :0

Hi all, Great to see you all in the last meeting :-) I was the skateboarder...who caught me almost falling shortly before I left? LOL ----------- Remote X [Insert name I've forgotten here (sorry!)] mentioned that their users connect to a remote session's root desktop (or whatever you call the initial/primary display :0 deal that you initially/locally get). I would like to do this as well. SSH with port forwarding is probably my preference, but wireguard would be OK as well. I don't think I want to directly expose anything like xrdp. Anyway - could you please refresh my memory as to what was being used? I'm running i3 in this case (started via lightdm). I generally have not loved using VNC-based tools, but if that's what is currently recommended, I guess I'll give it another go. ------------ SSHFS Optimization Also - I referred to using sshfs internally for myself to my NAS, and some optimizations for it. Educational Linux ... WAS: REMINDER: Upcoming LAN Party !!

Speaking about linux in education ... I work for Tom Snyder Productions (a Scholastic company) (www.tomsnyder.com) we make Educational software for schools. Recently we started using a toolkit for windows/mac portability that also happens to have every kind of unix support you could want. (you can probably guess what toolkit it is). So us geeky engineers have been pushing for a linux port, even if it's an unsupported port. So we went to customer service to see how many linux requests there were ... 0, zero, nadda, zilch. And we have a very in-depth customer relations database, every call gets logged. We asked around a bit, and found that it probably wouldn't work. It seems schools using linux are usually doing it because they are trying to save every penny. Kind of hard to sell software to schools like that. But at least we found out there's a lot of linux fileservers out there, so we're QA'ing serving our network products from them. (you'd be surprised at the wide varriances in file-locking between servers & protocols!) So I guess the moral of the story, call you congressmen ... Err... Um...call your software vendors, you never know when they might be listening. Its really up to all of you and your imaginations as to what we can do with this type of setup. I'll even entertain doing a couple of network based Linux installations if folks want that. If people need help configuring their systems for networking, that help will be available. I'll also be available to do a demonstration of VNC for those interested. The possibilities are really endless. Due to the amount of time to setup such a LAN and still have time to have fun with it, I've extended the time of the WLUG meeting from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM (note earlier start time!). Have a lot of fun, and I'll see you all on Wednesday. Hey Jack! An event like this would right up WLUG's alley! Our next meeting is scheduled for the 9th. I unfortunately have a family even on the 18th and will be out of town, otherwise I would be there in spades. One of things that WLUG started out doing was "install fests" where we helped people get Linux on their desktops! We *just had a meeting* so I'd be amenable to moving the meeting to the 16th to help prep and make bootable media if that would help. I'm absolutely horrified by the immense amount of e-waste this debacle is causing, all in search of the mighty dollar.. Thanks, Tim.
