Great meeting last night!

Hey Everybody, Last night's meeting was fantastic! It's always great to get a full house! For those of you who were unable to make it, there were a number of fantastic mini talks. Login gave a great 15 minute rundown regarding the "audit2allow" tool to generate selinux rules. Login then proceeded to show how SElinux is running in lots of places... and then SSH'd into his phone to show that it was also run SElinux. kudos on the sshing over bluetooth from your laptop... that was cool. Greg then gave a great demo on a very lightweight security oriented linux called "Heads" (as opposed to the more well known "Tails" distribution. What was more amazing was that he was running it on a pretty old laptop and it was zippy... Though their support for mirroring displays could be a bit clearer! It was really impressive what you can do with a two core pentium laptop and a usb stick! Lastly, Chuck showed off Qubes. While the install didn't finish until we'd come back from dinner! Chuck was able to talk about the idea of separating applications into different Xen domains. It was really cool. Though we talked about this at and after dinner... I'm fearful that Xen is going the way of the dodo... I wonder if in the future the Qubes people will support other hypervisors. Thank to Login, Greg and Chuck for presenting and thanks to everybody for turning it into a lively and interesting round table discussion. No worries. We did more talking about a whole range of stuff including the new wifi standard stuff than the pi music player. Also, if you did show up virtually, you'd have been frustrated. The room was way too big for the dinky mic I brought. I'm going to have to buy a good omni mic that I can put on a tripod in the middle of the room. Possibly a lav mic for the person speaking as well. Next month we will have a more organized presentation. Keegan, one of the guys who's new to the group had a bunch of great suggestions so it'll be a much better presentation for it. In talking to the people in the room, the idea of a stand alone FOSS music player was appealing to everybody. Also, John redoing his KiCAD demo was of interest as well. Tim. For some people converting to linux doesn't make sence. Looking for Trixbox and A2 Billing project support (Simon)

I have a project consisting of setting up a prepaid phone card operation using Linux server, Trixbox and A2 Billing sofware. I have Trixbox running on a Centos Server right now, but there is more work to be done. I dont know if anyone has experience in this kind of setup or in VOIP area. If you do, I would appreciate hearing from you. Depends on what kind of programming you want to do: low level drivers, OS internals, application, GUI, etc. Just find a project that interests you, join the developers mailing list, start to learn 'git' (or subversion or mercurial) for distributed development and then jump in. So I'm going to arrange to have some pizza delivered! I expect that after the meeting we're going to head off to wooberry or elsewhere for dessert. Who is Jon "Maddog" Hall? Jon "maddog" Hall is the Chairman of the Board of the Linux Professional Institute, and the President of Linux International. Since 1969, Mr. Hall has been a programmer, systems designer, systems administrator, product manager, technical marketing manager, author and educator. He currently works as an independent consultant, and is involved with bringing environmentally friendly computing to emerging marketplaces as well as working on performance and educational issues with Free and Open Source Software via the Linaro Association. He is also closely aligned with LeMaker, a design center located in Shengen, China. While not a founding member of LPI, maddog helped formulate some of the concepts and donated personal money to allow the first 200 tests be tested for psychometrics. Mr. Hall has worked for such companies as Western Electric Corporation, Aetna Life and Casualty, Bell Laboratories, Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), VA Linux Systems, SGI, Futura Networks (Campus Party) and Linaro. Mr. Hall has taught at Hartford State Technical College (HSTC), Merrimack College and Daniel Webster College. While at HSTC his students gave him the nickname of "maddog", and he developed the skills necessary for talking to university students over pizza and beer. Mr Hall has worked on many different operating systems (MFT, MVT, VS1, VS2, MVS, CP-67, VM/CMS, RSTS/E, RSX-11M, CP/M) but concentrated on Unix systems since 1980 and Linux systems since 1994, when he first met Linus Torvalds and correctly recognized the commercial importance of Linux and Free and Open Source Software. Mr. Hall obtained a DEC "Alpha" system for Linus Torvalds and organized and engineering team which helped the Linux community to port Linux to the world's fastest 64-bit microcomputer. Since 2006 Mr. Hall has been working on Project Cauā, which will large numbers of high-tech jobs allowing students who could not afford to attend university to both attend university and get real-life job experience. Mr. Hall is the author of numerous magazine and newspaper articles, many presentations and one book, "Linux for Dummies". He currently writes a blog for Linux Pro Magazine. Mr. Hall has consulted with the governments of China, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Brasil as well as the United Nations and many local and state governments on the use of Free and Open Source Software. Mr. Hall serves on the boards of several companies, and several non-profit organizations.
