Postponing meeting to the 23rd due to career week.

Speaking with Frank, this week is career week at WPI and a mob scene. There are zero rooms to reserve. I think it makes the most sense to push the meeting off to the 23rd so we can get a room with proper A/V, etc. As for a topic, a couple people have asked me about container based distros. I think this would be a great topic. I've recently gotten heavy involved in k8s deployment stuff and I've had to wrap my brain around this stuff. Fedora, Container OS, Rancher OS, Blend OS, the list goes on. I think there's an interesting conversation around how user friendly, secure, etc. this various options are. Is this something people would be interested in? Later, Tim. Hey guys, What a great meeting last week! A big shout out to Xavier for doing his presentation on NixOS! Hopefully Tim will be able to share the links to the slides and other info. We talked about: NixOS - A tool and environment for building systems in a deterministic manner. Sorta like Ansible, or Puppet, or Chef, or Salt or cfengine (old school!) or Terraform. But with it's own twist on how it keeps a hash pointing at the version you have, so you can mix-n-match tools versions easily. nushell (https://www.nushell.sh/) - a new shell for Linux and MacOS which includes some PowerShell like features. It looks interesting for sure. But maybe this old dog is too stuck in his ways to change direnv (https://direnv.net/) - A way to have your shell environment updated when you 'cd' into a directory, so that you don't have to remember what environment settings your need when you're moving around and doing work. I wish I had this for my engineers back when I was supporting an ASIC design team, they would have loved this. So who's going to present next month? And what are the feelings of those who are remote? Were you able to follow along and enjoy the talk? Doing both in-person and streamed stuff is tough at times, and I feel like we're not paying enough attention to those who try to comment from remote connections. Cheers, John

Hi folks, The next Worcester Linux Users' Group (WLUG) meeting will be held at its regularly scheduled time: the 2nd Wednesday of the month, which is Wednesday, April 10, at 7PM. The location will be the WPI Campus Center, Mid-Centry Room 331. This month we will have Jim Gettys from Bell Labs talk about Internet buffer bloat. "Internet buffer bloat, by Jim Gettys (Bell Labs) VOIP and teleconferencing often perform much more poorly on today's Internet than the Internet of a decade ago, despite great gains in bandwidth. Lots of fiber, cheap memory, smart hardware, variability of wireless goodput, changes in web browser behaviour, changes in TCP implementations, and a focus on benchmarking Internet performance solely by bandwidth, and engineer's natural reluctance to drop packets have conspired to encourage papering over problems by adding buffers; each of which may introduce latency when filled. The mistaken quest to never drop packets has destroyed interactivity under load, and often results in actual higher packet loss, as TCP's congestion avoidance algorithms have been defeated by these buffers. The lessons of the "RED manifesto" of 1997 have been forgotten or never learned by a new generation of engineers." "interesting" KVM currently in my server rack. It's two nonfunctional KVMs kludged together to make one functional KVM with no docs and no monitor. One of the switches only has a functional switch, and one of the switches only has a functional keyboard, with a COTS Dell monitor essentially gaff taped on top.
