But I have a few questions: (1) Did you guys see me? I tried to join WLUG meeting last Thu. I never got sound, but I saw some people I recognized, and a picture of myself. I was the guy with the big head. It actually looked bigger than it is, partly because of the firmware in the standard laptop camera which uses AI to zoom in and magnify any slight hint of receding hair, and partly because I was leaning back in a comfy chair with the "Lap"top on my chest. (2) Is the URL https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA still active? Does it work with Microsoft Windows? I am thinking that I could test it out by connecting to WlugMA with my Linux computer while Diane connects with her MS computer. Then we could debug by shouting across the living room. After I quit the WLUG meeting, a poked some menu buttons I had not before and discovered Multimedia ==> PulseAudio Volume Control. By turning that up, I can reliably get sound while playing a *.mp4 with vlc. I tried listening to radio stations (wicn, wbur, wgbh) and it mostly didn't work, but once or twice it did work. I really have no idea why it is sometime but not always. I did notice that when I click (what I take to be) the button to listen to streaming radio over internet it starts looking up all kinds of things I did not ask for (facebook, twitter, chartbeat). I'm wondering if I might have a DNS (named) problem. I have never set up DHCP here, I just assign a static IP address each time I get a new computer. That does not happen often enough to be worth automation. (3) Does HTML5 require DHCP to redirect or forward the data stream? (4) Is there a standard codec or is that something that must be installed to match the whim of the website? -- Keith (Wright) aka Egghead

This way people could sit down at any system, login and their environment was just there. Now with everyone having laptops, I think most colleges have gone away from big computer labs any more. But keeping your files safe is tough. iCloud, OneDrive, rsync, etc have helped, but I'm not sure what the real answer is here. This could be an interesting topic! John

I've evaluated the performance of several vendors' products, ranging from the poor to the exemplary. I can talk about the modifications made in the block layer to accommodate for these devices, and the current implementation of the block discard support (which maps to ATA TRIM, which is important for device lognevity and performance) and how that is wired up to file systems such as ext4. Ideas for the next WLUG meeting

Hey everyone, I'd just like to say I had a fun time at Thursday's meeting! I'm already looking forward to the next meeting as I'm sure there are plenty of interesting topics we could discuss. As mentioned before, I think we could examine technologies that'd be beneficial to Linux on the desktop, like comparing packaging technologies including Flatpak, Snap, and AppImage. I think we could also look into the future of containers on the desktop as a whole with projects like Flatpak, toolbox, podman, and Silverblue. My workflow over the past few years has been using these upcoming technologies as daily drivers as they lead to saner development. For example, my laptop runs Silverblue ( https://fedoramagazine.org/what-is-silverblue/) which is a Fedora variant designed around immutability where a new system image is committed as the new /sysroot without affecting the state of the running system. This is reminiscent of Android A/B updates, although the update backend -- ostree -- has elements of a version control system like git. Toolbox ( https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-silverblue/toolbox/) is also interesting as it lets you switch into an unprivileged development environment that can be built up and torn down without affecting the host as tools are installed inside a container.
