Upcoming meeting: Wed, Sept. 10th, 7:00 PM

HI everybody, Our next meeting shall be held in Kinnicutt Hall on the WPI campus on Wednesday, September 10th, at 7:00 PM. Note that this location is not the same as last month. This is the room that we generally use for our meetings. At this meeting, the topic will be "An Introduction to Linux for Newcomers", and the intended audience is people who do not know much (if anything) about Linux, but do have experience with computers and perhaps Windows. I'll prepare some slides and discuss the following topics (and perhaps more): o What is Linux? o Origins of Linux o Software licensing o Computer requirements (memory, disk space, etc) o How to obtain a copy of Linux o How to "test drive" Linux without messing up my computer o More... o Q/A session during the meeting and afterwards o Demo of a single CD version of Linux which won't modify your existing files on the C: drive o Giveaway: copies of a single CD version of Linux (probably Knoppix and/or Suse Live Eval - can somebody help me burn a few copies?) Bring your friends - let's see if we can get them to at least "kick the tires" on Linux. After the meeting, we'll adjourn to the Boynton Restaurant for pizza and beer. See ya there! July WLUG Meeting will be online tonight @7pm

Hey Gang, I'd like to start by apologizing. There's been some illness and other stuff going on and I've focused a bit less on WLUG than I'd like. Thankfully things are getting sorted out at my end and I will be focusing much more on WLUG. Tonight the meeting is going to be online. With the late announcement combined with only myself and John in person, it makes more sense to just have it online for this month. I plan on reaching out to the WPI people and seeing about doing in person meetings there for August hopefully. I'd also like to have a WLUG bbq at some point as well. We'll have our meeting at the same time and same place and like usual, it's going to be awesome. HI everybody, This is a friendly reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held on Wednesday, Nov. 14th, at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall on the WPI campus in Worcester, MA, USA. Wed is tight but doable. I have an every-Wed. 4 pm meeting building the new FM radio station over here in Athol. Thursdays are clear. I can make either arrangement. WLUG Meeting May 18th Topic: Codi / Plex / RetroPi Location: WPI student center Rm 129

Hey Gang, Our next meeting is going to be May 18th! at 7pm. We'll be meeting in the WPI Student Center Rm 129. (Go to the bottom of the stairs) Topic: Plex / Codi / RetroPi. or (So you've got a huge TV, what to do with? Watch movies and play retro computer games!!!) Everybody loves to watch movies, but DVD's scratch, get lost etc. A better way to manage your extensive collection is through programs such as Plex and Codi. As for speakers we're going to have a diverse group speaking at this meeting. I will be speaking about RetroPi. I'm looking for speakers for Plex / Codi. Write me or just show up! As usual, snacks and refreshments will be provided and after the meeting we'll head off to Tech Pizza. Upcoming meetings - topic proposals

HI everybody, For our next meeting, I would like to have somebody finish the thread from the last meeting or two by explaining the contents of their firewall script and why the series of ipchains commands works for them. This might be helpful to folks who are either considering implementing a firewall or who want to understand the canned script that they got from wherever. My idea for a subsequent meeting was to have a newbie meeting as we haven't had one in quite some time. One idea I had was to discuss a shell: a) bash - scripting, command line "tricks" perhaps go over a "real" script, such as a startup script in /etc/init.d/wherever... Another idea would be to discuss the use of digital cameras with Linux. Are there other topics people would like to see? Are there volunteers to take on these topics?
