I had an intenet host with Tandy Monitor that ran a name server, mail server, and web server. That's all broken now because the ISP no longer does DSL. Instead I pay $10 month for a VPS (Virtual Private Server) from AfterBurst, which comes with an IP address. Pretty much everything that used to be in my basement is now in "the cloud". It's not "Self" because its not my computer, but almost everything else is the same. AfterBurst does not do anything, just let me use their computer to do it myself. The main problem I am dealing with now is that the internal (in home) network is notwork. I have been keeping notes and put them here: http://www.free-comp-shop.com/none/ipv6.html I am trying to use IPv6, which I have never done before. If anybody has any suggestions... -- Keith

Possible topic for the next meeting?

Greetings, I don't know whether there is a topic for the next meeting and it just hasn't made it onto the web page or not, but I figured I'd offer a suggestion to the group. Is anyone interested on seeing a presentation on the various DVD players that are available for Linux along with their setup. hardware support, and configuration, etc? I'm headed to the west coast next week for a 7-day Alaskan cruise, and I really need something to do for the 6-hour plane ride each way other than watching Top Gun. I'd be happy to do so, but I figured I'd ask the group instead of just mailing Andy as "installing and running a couple of apps in Linux" might be on the light side for a presentation. If people are interested and there's already something for this month, just let me know and I'll write something up. I want to thank everyone at Thursday night's meeting for the warm welcome. What a treat it was to be sitting in a group and being able to use words like "distro", "Gnome", and "YaST" without drawing strange looks. The pizza was good, too. :-) I learned alot, but not as much as I thought I had. When I tried to get my printer functional I must have forgotten or misunderstood the advice that was shared with me. (I will be bringing a notebook with me next meeting.) I've got openSuSE 10.2 and access the net through a wireless router. There are 4 boxes on the LAN and the other 3 are WinXP systems. The printer we use is connected to one of those machines. I can ping the printer host box from my Linux system. Printer sharing is turned on at the host, and the XP machines print fine through the LAN. The CUPS job monitor acts as if the print jobs are being sent, right down to the progress bar and the printer icon going from green to yellow and back to green, with no error messages. But of course, there is no page forthcoming from the printer or this email would have been much shorter. It sounded so simple at the meeting...
