Re: [Wlug] Next meeting - topics?

by Stephen C. Daukas

I like the LTSP topic... Perhaps we could also put on a tutorial for putting together an email server, discussing spam, et al.? Amother thought might be to cover the basics for security (not another implementation discussion, but the major categories of exploits and how they work, hence how to think about protecting your linux box against them)... // end random thoughts Steve Andy Stewart wrote: >HI everybody, > >I am wondering what we should discuss at our next meeting - any ideas? > >I have been playing with diskless clients lately. Next WLUG Meeting March 21st 2019, Topic: TBD

by Tim Keller

Hey Gang, We've got a WLUG meeting on the 14th of March Location: WPI Student Center Mid Century Room (rm 331) Time: 7pm I've got a couple ideas for topics. 1. Snaps / flatpacks / appimage. These are entirely encapsulated applications that'll run on a variety of linux distributions. My new laptop runs snaps using snapd. This is just one of a bunch of new technologies for distributing software without having it tied to the machines glibc and underlying libraries. 2. Microsoft and its complicated relationship with the OSS community. Are we moving towards a dystopian future of locked and signed bootloaders? Where your only option is to run Windows 10 with the linux subsystem. Has google essentially done the same thing with Chromebook's and ChromeOS and Android? If someone has a topic that they're dying to do, let me know. As usual refreshments and snacks will be provided and afterwards we'll head off for dinner to continue the conversation. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Re: [Wlug] (for meeting projectors) laptops,VGA-out,linux....

by Tim Keller

Playing with Cinnamon last night I'm going to take the dive and throw it on a RHEL7 VM and see if I like it better than Mate. If so, I'll swap over my desktop and see... Thanks for doing some great digging on the projector stuff.. It's only 2017... Projectors should just *work*. Reminder: Guest Speaker 'maddog'

by Andy Stewart

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI everybody, The next WLUG meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 15th at 7:00 PM. Our guest speaker will be Jon 'maddog' Hall, the Executive Director of Linux International, and his topic will be: "The Many Ways of Making Money with Free and Open Source" Details about the talk, and some biographical information about our speaker, can be found on the WLUG home page. maddog is a great speaker who has spoken at several WLUG meetings in the past. His talks are always quite informative and entertaining, and the response from the WLUG membership has been overwhelmingly positive. There is a reasonable probability that the meeting location will move. If so, I'll let you know, and I'll also have a sign posted at the Access Grid room if we do move elsewhere on campus. For now, assume that we'll be in the usual place. Bring your friends! Re: Next Meeting November 18th, NOT the 11th.

by Joshua Stone

Hey Tim, We're good to go! I've reserved the conference room at the Hudon public library for the following times: Nov 18 @ 7:00PM - 8:30PM Dec 9 @ 7:00PM - 8:30PM I figured it'd be best to reserve the room for the December meeting just in case we decide to meet in-person again for the holidays. If we decide on a different venue, then I can free up that time slot. If anyone still needs to figure out parking, there are multiple options available with the library parking lot being the most convenient: https://www.discoverhudson.org/plan-your-visit/ - Josh On Thu, Nov 11, 2021 at 12:01 PM Tim Keller via WLUG <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> wrote: > Joshua, > > Please reserve a conference room for us at the Hudson Public Library. > > Chuck, an exploration of how Intel secreted minix into everybody's cpu's > would be a great talk! > > Tim. > > On Thu, Nov 11, 2021 at 11:16 AM Chuck Anderson via WLUG < > wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> wrote: > >> Happy Birthday Tim! >> >> I think we should do a talk on MINIX. Re: [Wlug] WLUG BBQ !!!

by James P. Gray

I have no idea how many people might come. Maybe 30? Is someone taking RSVPs? If your main goal is to advance your knowledge in Linux you may find it more worth your while to attend a regular meeting then the BBQ. During regular meetings we cover specific topics or have free ranging discussions. My understanding is that the BBQ is more of a social event for the group. Someone correct me if I am wrong. kstratton(a)fastmail.us wrote: > I recently joined the mailing list to get an idea of how active this > group is.
