Heya - fun meeting, cool stuff! I meant to mention, I have a ton (literally) of decommissioned equipment at work we're looking to give/sell/donate away. Mostly Dell, but some other brands mixed in. I may have posted a partial list at some point on the list. A few older servers (R805, R300, two 32-bay Celeros NAS units, Synology RS2416+ with SAS expansion chassis), Optiplex and Precision desktops, a few Precision laptops (that cost us between$4-7K when new), a 16-port KVM, about 30 monitors, keyboards, mice, etc. etc. etc. If you know anyone who needs any more tech to play with, I have it! I also have a bunch of stuff at home that's available. meeting topic

Am I wrong, or is the gentoo install insanely comlicated? Although I did not sit in front of it from start to finish, it seems like an install takes hours and hours of work... I followed the Handbook (some 80 pages of documentation), which i'm sure is very accurate and each step worked as advertised, but in the end it was too much. After an install of debian, which takes me less than 20 minutes, this was too much for my poor little brain to take, and I eventually gave up. In addition to that, I can't for the life of me, get slackware to consistantly install lilo correctly during the install. Any comments on either of these would be apreciated, however, I am just writing this to toss my vote in for a linux install fest as a meeting topic. I have no problem bringing in a laptop to show the simple, eligant, streamlined, 20 minute debian install, but I would like to also see someone go through a gentoo install, and assist on a slackware lilo config...all of which can be done via my laptop if needed. A few days ago I watched a Matthew Moore You tube "Mythbusting Linux" (Https//www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_lhqg_p21k) and he shows how he got malware and his Arch Linux was hacked. I am using Linux Mint 17.3 and now have an antivirus program. I used Comodo for my XP and have it here. So now I guess we should have to buy an antivirus. I'm also looking for better ways to email and since I now have Yandex and Zoho as well as Gmail perhaps there is one even safer. I would also like to give kudos to Apple for refusing to give up the master key codes to NSA, DHS and the FBI though they have reasonably cooperated with these agencies in the past. All this from a newbie. Thank you. I like the LTSP topic... Perhaps we could also put on a tutorial for putting together an email server, discussing spam, et al.? Next WLUG Meeting March 21st 2019, Topic: TBD

Hey Gang, We've got a WLUG meeting on the 14th of March Location: WPI Student Center Mid Century Room (rm 331) Time: 7pm I've got a couple ideas for topics. 1. Snaps / flatpacks / appimage. These are entirely encapsulated applications that'll run on a variety of linux distributions. My new laptop runs snaps using snapd. This is just one of a bunch of new technologies for distributing software without having it tied to the machines glibc and underlying libraries. 2. Microsoft and its complicated relationship with the OSS community. Are we moving towards a dystopian future of locked and signed bootloaders? Where your only option is to run Windows 10 with the linux subsystem. Has google essentially done the same thing with Chromebook's and ChromeOS and Android? If someone has a topic that they're dying to do, let me know. As usual refreshments and snacks will be provided and afterwards we'll head off for dinner to continue the conversation.
