Announce: WLUG Meeting Wednesday May 12 7PM

Hi folks, Our next WLUG meeting is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, May 12 at 7:00 PM in Morgan Hall at the WPI campus in Worcester, MA USA. I'm pleased to announce that Jeff Moyer from Red Hat will be our guest speaker. He will be giving a talk on Solid-State Drive technology (SSDs): A Complete Guide to SSDs This talk explains the inner workings of solid state storage technology in an easy to understand manner. The innate properties of NAND flash are discussed in the context of current disk scheduling methodologies. Benchmark results comparing SSDs and traditional rotating media are presented. The talk further outlines changes in the Linux kernel and file system utilities that have been made to accommodate SSDs, and changes that are on their way. Finally, guidance is given on practical deployment of SSDs, including file system creation and mount options, I/O scheduler selection, and answers to some frequently asked questions. Mher, Another way you can "sharpen your skills" is to check out the objectives of the Linux Professional Institute's LPIC-1 and LPIC-2 tests (lpi.org) https://www.lpi.org/our-certifications/lpic-1-overview https://www.lpi.org/our-certifications/lpic-2-overview Although we do list training partners and offer some training materials, we do not do training ourselves, only certifications. We have 180,000 certified people in over 180 countries. If you look through our objectives for each level and you can honestly say that you can do each objective, then you have the skills that many companies want. If you get to some of the objectives and say "I do not know how to do that", then you can spend some of your time looking it up and practicing so when you go for that interview and are asked about it you can tell them with confidence that you can do it. I'd like to throw my hat in the ring and give an overview+demo of GNURadio, a FOSS package for graphically developing DSP applications and interfacing with Software-Defined Radios (SDR). I spent last summer at MITRE using this software heavily, and I'm also using it for my MQP work. For the demo, I'd like to bring down some hardware from my lab ( https://www.ettus.com/product/details/UN210-KIT) as well as the $20 RTL-SDR dongle ( http://www.nooelec.com/store/sdr/sdr-receivers/nesdr-mini-rtl2832-r820t.html) to show reception of broadcast FM, ADS-B telemetry from airplanes, as well as some real time views of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and streaming drone footage from a DJI Phantom 3 Pro. Here's the outline: What's SDR? Why should we care? Why do I care? Who uses GNURadio? GNURadio fundamentals Introducing the workflow/flowgraph interface Cloning/Building/Installing (this won't be specific, just mentioning the GitHub repo and where the quickstart guide is) How to contribute (also GR-hackfest!) GNURadio as a software development framework Ex: GQRX (http://gqrx.dk) For the demo, I'll show off some stuff I've made with GNURadio, as well as GQRX to interface with the RTL-SDR. I'm pretty confident that I can cram it inside of 2 hours, because I'll be basically recycling the slides I made for my MITRE presentation, minus the branding and project-specific content. Kids, school, etc. Firstly, we will be meeting in Rm. 203 Stratton Hall: http://maps.wpi.edu/map/?id=609#!ce/6603,11184?ct/11184?m/105250 Speaking of which, our topic is going to be about STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) oriented educational things that are built with or work on linux. Basically I see this as a round table for people to talk about some of the cool stuff that's out there for kids these days. I've got scratch loaded on my machine so I can give a demo of that. I've also got Alice and google blocks as well. I'll also bring along my copy of snap circuits. This is an open venue. Feel free to do some research and find something cool.
