Meeting over the Access Grid?

As a few of you may already know, WPI has just recently installed an Access Grid Node. For those of you who have never heard of the Access Grid project, it's a completely immersive video conferencing system - like traditional videoconferencing, but arranged such that the technology portion becomes invisible, and you can converse with others as if they were in the same room. More details at http://www.accessgrid.org/ My idea was that if we could find a couple of remote sites with people who might be interested in joining us, we could have a meeting over the Access Grid. A list of other Access Grid sites is up at http://www-fp.mcs.anl.gov/fl/accessgrid/nodes.htm and includes BU at least. If anyone knows anyone else at any of these sites who would be interested, we can start seeing about scheduling the time needed in all of the spaces. -- Frank Sweetser fs at wpi.edu WPI Network Engineer

Disclaimer: The last time I tried -- ~ 2 years ago -- it would boot linux via bootp. I also had something of a useful distro (?) "installed", with binaries cribbed from a mix of stuff from handhelds.org and netwinder rpms. But it will probably take some doing to get it up and running since I have no documentation for the current firmware; and, the last time I checked, I wasn't greeted by a 'may I help you' prompt upon powering it up. [I would power it up now but I cannot find the power supply :) ] ...Dean

Depends on your hardware and what packages you want. If your hardware is supported (or at least works with it) You can't beat RHEL in terms of stability. However, even with external repos, you might not have all the packages you want, or the versions of them you want. CentOS still doesn't have 6 out (based on F12/13), so the hardware support is still about on par. 5.x could be problematic. However if you want to give it a shot, try Scientific Linux. It's at version 6, and claims to be 100% binary compatible to RHEL. Fedora is going to have more updated packages and drivers, at the cost of stability. However, you will probably have better luck getting it on a laptop. Can't speak for Ubuntu or Gentoo. Meeting topics

I've noticed that not too many people have putting in meeting topic requests, so I thought that if anyone's interested I'd volunteer to throw together some slides on BtrFS. For those of you who haven't heard of it, BtrFS is the next generation linux filesystem. Though still in heavy development, it was included in the mainstream kernel last year. It promises to scale to filesystems well beyond what any of the current offerings can handle (including ext4), as well as offering far greater flexibility and better data security for data admins. Wednesday, June 13, 7:00 - 9:00 PM WPI Campus Center, Chairman's Room (room 129) Dan Walsh of Red Hat will be giving a presentation on Secure Virtual Containers/Multi-Tenancy: "During the Last few years as computers have become more powerful, there has been a move towards server computing. Most people call this "Cloud" computing. One key feature of this is moving servers out of the data center and onto virtual machines. My presentation will describe this as Multitenancy.. This talk will cover technologies from RHEL5, RHEL6 and RHEL7. SELinux, Virtualization, Sandbox and Secure Container Applications." Afterwards, we will go out for pizza and continue our discussions. The speaker for this meeting is my good friend Dr. Nick Howgrave-Graham. He's a cryptographer who has experience in both the making and breaking of encryption systems. This will be a general talk about some commonly used encryption systems, the math around them and how some of these systems have been broken through poor design. If there are some specific encryption algorithm / system that you'd like to deep dive, email the list, I'll let Nick know and possibly he can focus on that.
