Hey Gang, This a reminder we've got a meeting Thursday April 14th! Here are the details: Date: April 14th, 2016 Time: 7pm Location: Atwater-Kent rm. 232 Topic: None Currently. If someone wants to speak let me know! I've reached out to a bunch of people but schedules/etc. have gotten in the way. Worse case scenario, we simply nerd out... If people are interested I can speak about hadoop and what's gone into building the clusters and some of the hardware and management challenges I've dealt with. A better description of the location is: WPI Sports and Recreation Center room 412 - Class of '61 Meeting Room 1. This is a new building as of a few years ago. It is next to Harrington Auditorium, on the hill between it and the football field. At 8pm the computer that runs ntpd (NetTimePro) said it was time to move along. This is not a gripe, it's a bug report. Jitsi actually seemed to work better from the public library. This is a bit frightening. WPI has been teaching over video chat for years. We did video chat meetings with the equipment in the student center back in the Andy Stewart days. Hey Everybody! We have a WLUG meeting on Sept. 15th at 7PM! Here are the vitals: Location: Washburn Labs Rm 232 @7pm Speaker: William Temple Topic: Container technologies... The speaker for this meeting is William Temple. Here's what he recently posted to the list (if you didn't already see it) Thanks for inviting me to give a talk on containers this Thursday. I'm a Senior at WPI and spent the last two summers working on container technologies at Red Hat under the Project Atomic/OpenShift banners. If you all are interested, topics for discussion could be: - Containers 101: Introduction & Motivations - Container Technologies -- docker -- Open Containers Initiative -- LXC, rkt, and others - Container Implementation -- namespaces -- cgroups -- security implications, comparison to Virtual Machines - Containers in Production (Kubernetes, etc.) - Containers in Consumer Environments (Flatpak, Snappy, etc.) If there are any other container-related topics you'd like to hear about, please just let me know and I can work them in. I'm mostly familiar with the Docker/OCI & Kubernetes orchestration stack, so I won't be able to go into technical details about other systems, but can give an overview if someone else wants to get into the weeds about any other container systems. I'd like to thank Logan for getting this organized and for William for being accomidating of our location and schedule change. I've had linux in a production environment for a manufacturing company now for 3-4 years. linux running manufacturing automation, and linux running samba filesever PDC, cups print, http, dns, dhcp, mysql., and automated backups. over the last few months, migrated all the machines from redhat 8 and 9 to Gentoo. Gentoo is working out great.
