WLUG Meeting Sept. 15th, 2016 @7PM Topic: Docker!

by Tim Keller

Hey Everybody! We have a WLUG meeting on Sept. 15th at 7PM! Here are the vitals: Location: Washburn Labs Rm 232 @7pm Speaker: William Temple Topic: Container technologies... The speaker for this meeting is William Temple. Here's what he recently posted to the list (if you didn't already see it) Thanks for inviting me to give a talk on containers this Thursday. I'm a Senior at WPI and spent the last two summers working on container technologies at Red Hat under the Project Atomic/OpenShift banners. If you all are interested, topics for discussion could be: - Containers 101: Introduction & Motivations - Container Technologies -- docker -- Open Containers Initiative -- LXC, rkt, and others - Container Implementation -- namespaces -- cgroups -- security implications, comparison to Virtual Machines - Containers in Production (Kubernetes, etc.) - Containers in Consumer Environments (Flatpak, Snappy, etc.) If there are any other container-related topics you'd like to hear about, please just let me know and I can work them in. I'm mostly familiar with the Docker/OCI & Kubernetes orchestration stack, so I won't be able to go into technical details about other systems, but can give an overview if someone else wants to get into the weeds about any other container systems. I'd like to thank Logan for getting this organized and for William for being accomidating of our location and schedule change. As always, there will be refreshments and snacks and we'll head to Tech Pizza afterwards! See ya there! Re: [Wlug] Possible topic for the next meeting?

by Andy Stewart

HI all, There is currently no scheduled speaker or topic for the August WLUG meeting. If you would like to do this talk, I think it would be great. I'm curious as to what you would like to cover, or what others might like to see covered. Let me seed the conversation bu suggesting the following possibilities: 1) Supported DVD players 2) What software, kernel, apps, etc needed to use DVD 3) DVD-ROM - just like a CDROM, but bigger - anything special or funny here? 4) DVD-RAM - now there's an idea 5) Video DVD - can I watch The Matrix while coding? :-) These are just thoughts and suggestions....are there others? Thanks, Andy -- Andy Stewart Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA, USA http://www.wlug.org

by Richard Klein

I'm working nights now, so I'm not sure I'll be able to make next meeting. Any of the topics work for me, but I have an immediate interest in virtualization. Re: WLUG history

by Tim Keller

One of my favorite anecdotes is from one of our installfests at Stratus where Doug Wade tripped over the power cord *just* as the install had finished, but before the MBR/LILO could be written to the disk. It was cool to see a bunch of linux hackers stand around and get Mandrake to properly boot on this persons machine. Good times. Tim. Hey Gang, We've got a meeting on Thursday!!! I don't know how I managed to screw up the date on the subject line and then send a follow up email thinking it was already Wednesday.. Sorry about that! I blame a lack of sleep... Time/Date: March 14th, 2019 @ 7PM. Location: WPI Student Center Mid Century Room (Rm 331) Topic: Containerized applications Appimage, snaps, flatpacks... Snacks and Refreshments will be provided and afterwards well head off for dinner to continue the conversation. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".
