Reminder: Meeting Thurs 7 PM

by Andy Stewart

HI Everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting which will be held on Thursday, Feb. 10th at 7:00 PM in the usual place. Our guest speaker will be Scott Venier, a long time WLUG member, who will be discussing Vesta, a software configuration management system. Vesta is a portable SCM system targeted at supporting development of software systems of almost any size, from fairly small (under 10,000 source lines) to very large (10,000,000 source lines). It is both a revision control system and a build system. Vesta provides full automatic dependency detection and guarantees exact repeatability of any build. See ya there! Hi All, I wanted to follow up on a few threads from last night's meeting... - I learned from Tim's presentation that Pygame wraps SDL, as well as providing other useful classes and code. I happened to be poking around the Spore installation on my Macbook, and I found that it uses SDL, and even includes source! guinan@macbook:~ $ find /Applications/SPORE/SPORE.app/ ... /Applications/SPORE/SPORE.app//Contents/Frameworks/SDL.framework /Applications/SPORE/SPORE.app//Contents/Frameworks/SDL.framework/Headers /Applications/SPORE/SPORE.app//Contents/Frameworks/SDL.framework/Headers/begin_code.h /Applications/SPORE/SPORE.app//Contents/Frameworks/SDL.framework/Headers/close_code.h /Applications/SPORE/SPORE.app//Contents/Frameworks/SDL.framework/Headers/SDL.h ... /Applications/SPORE/SPORE.app//Contents/Frameworks/SDL.framework/SDL-source-with-transgaming-updates.tar.gz ... Not Linux-specific, sure, but neat that SDL is used in one of the biggest games of the past year. - Possible solution for the broken sound device on that laptop, http://rightsock.com/~kjw/Tech/usb-sound-C-Media.html - Andy and other ham enthusiansts, you might like this podcast, http://soldersmoke.com/ Its mostly about Ham radio, but also homebrew electronics in general, with some amateur astronomy, and in recent episodes he's been doing more and more with Linux. Actually, I had nothing to do but sit with my laptop on top of my lap and work on other things, so I left jit.si running and checked back. About 7:45 they showed up in a new room with the meeting in progress. I don't care much about crooked keyboards. WLUG meetings these days are mostly a chance to test my sound and video, which I rarely use otherwise. My big project for the past few weeks was begun in a hurry when the company that hosts the VPS that runs both mail and web servers sent me a message saying they are going out of business. I got another; am sending this mail throught it. The old SVP ran PRETTY_NAME="Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye)" while the new one "Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie)" There were several web pages that said that Debian 13 could not run fail2ban without special configuration. Either they were just wrong or it was fixed in some 13.N release. (Does anyone know how to see N?) It seemed to install just fine. But now I have learned enough to reach a higher plane of confusion. I had planned to ask a question, but in trying to ask it I have found the answer; I just misread the man page and made a stupid typo. -- Keith

WLUG MEETING: April 16th, 2003

by Andy Stewart

Hi everybody, I'd like to tantalize you with an announcement about the next meeting. :-) It will be held on Wednesday, April 16th at 7:00 PM in "the usual place". WLUG member Tim Keller will be discussing how he took Linux and other Open Source software to create his own Digital Video Recorder (DVR) similar to a TiVO. Tim will describe just what a DVR is and how it works. Tim will also discuss software issues, and finally will perform a live demo. I've just updated the website. I'll send out a reminder this weekend. I hope to see many of you in attendance! Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

REMINDER: Meeting Wed 18-sept-2002 7:00 PM

by Andy Stewart

HI Everybody, My apologies for not sending this out sooner, but our meeting for Wednesday evening is going to take place at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall on the WPI campus like usual. We won't be having the install fest since I didn't get off my butt and make the arrangements (sorry!). I hope to do that tomorrow for a potential install fest in 1-2 weeks. I'll say more about that on Wed evening (that'll put the pressure on me to get this done!). I'll bring my laptop and hope that the projector is available (Chuck, can you assist?). I had thought of doing a demo of the VideoLan client/server. Doug, would you like to volunteer to bring your laptop? We'll need a hub and some cables to build a network. I'll be sure to have the necesary tarballs to make this work, or you can download them yourself if you wish. I'll bring a DVD or two and we can try it out. I had thought of doing this "live" like we did one other time. In case Doug can't make the meeting, having another laptop or two present might be interesting. Although the VideoLan client is interesting, I think the ability to stream the video over the net is pretty neat. Take a look at this website for some background info. http://www.videolan.org/ See ya later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

WLUG meeting Nov. 9th 2017! Location: WPI Mid Century Room 331

by Tim Keller

Hey Gang, Sorry for the short notice! We've got a meeting on Thursday! Topic: We'll, I'm in the midst of building a 3d printer! I *might* have it done for Thursday! I've done a lot of talking lately, but if people are interested, I've managed "figure" out freecad for the most part. Is this something people are interested in or does someone else have something they'd like to talk about. Location: WPI Mid-Century Room 331 As usual snacks and refreshments will be provided. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Does you meeting > start at 7:30? I assumed that the meeting starts at 7:00. I connected to https://jitsi.uvhash.org/WlugMA (no %20uvhash) at 7:00 and found people there. Does jitsi create rooms upon demand from anyone? My problem was that, while I could hear other people (at least while they were near the microphone and the gloppita-gloppita machine was off) they could not hear me, except intermittently. Worse, it seemed that my laptop was generating noise and feedback, so people had to mute me so that they could hear each other. The problem seemed to be in the software or configuration of my Thinpad with Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) and Firefox ESR 102.15.1 of Sept 12, 2023. I thought I had tested it the day before. I found a way to make a recording and recorded a short speech, which I could play back. It all seemed to work, but when I unplugged it and plugged it back in it required reconfiguration and I may have missed something and wound up using the built-in mike. The same USB headphone/mike seemed to work when attached to a Windows machine, but where's the fun in that? I checked out early in disgust. Suggestions on how to debug the mike might be helpful. -- Keith
