Meeting Oct 12th 2017 at 7pm. Topic: Ansible Location: WPI Campus Center Rm 331

by Tim Keller

Hey Gang, Our next meeting will be on October 12th at 7pm. I'm going to give a quick talk on Ansible. It's a handy tool I use for install software on LOTS of computers. I'll also talk about Ansible playbooks as well. After that I figure we can talk about things people might want as topics and then head down for pizza at Tech. As usual snacks and refreshments will be provided. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Well, I won't be able to make the meeting, but if you want to see a little hack I did to my TiVo (yes, it runs Linux on a PPC processor), you can look at my homepage: http://www.kluge.net/~felicity/ It tells you what my TiVo is currently watching, as well as the listing of what it will be recording (todo), what's available to watch (now showing), and programs we told it to record (season passes). All the programming is done in TCL. I use the tivoweb software, which is essentially a webserver that interfaces with the TiVo data. I wrote/hacked together a few modules that grabs the information from the TiVo and spits it out in an easily parsible format. My linux server then grabs periodically via cron that information and puts it on the web server. :) There are some other standard modules that let you control the TiVo via web browser, etc. I really just like the fact that it uses my home broadband connection to get the daily information instead of the usual dial-up via modem. ;) -- Randomly Generated Tagline: They can always run stderr through uniq. :-) -- Larry Wall in <199704012331.PAA16535(a)wall.org>

REMINDER!! WLUG MEETING TOMORROW!! Dec 11th 2025! Topic: Bazzite!

by Tim Keller

Here we are, the last WLUG meeting for 2025! Time: 7PM Date: December 11th, 2025 Location: Technocopia, 44 Portland St. Worcester MA. Virtual Location: https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA Topic: Gaming on Linux! I'm going to be showing off my bazzite powered gaming desktop (that my wife is going to be the primary driver on) In the past I've had lots of conversations with potential linux users that go something like "Linux is so cool, but about my games.." and then the conversation gets awkward. I know there's some complicated stuff going on at Steam, but one thing they have done as a company is really pushed the envelope for gaming on linux. Bazzite aims to be a distro that just has it all working out of the box and makes use of the silver/blue bootc environment to make the machine more resilient to novice linux users that might accidentally break something or lose power mid upgrade, etc. I'm sure it's going to be a lively discussion and there will be lots to talk about. I also know that Technocopia is doing a xmas party / maker swap so we'll want to be respectful to them as well. As always afterwards we'll head out for some dinner and keep the conversation going. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Re: Great meeting last night! --- Sorry I couldn't stay

by Robert N. Evans

I connected twice at 7PM, but never seemed to hear anyone. So I also did not stay. Does you meeting > start at 7:30? I assumed that the meeting starts at 7:00. I connected to https://jitsi.uvhash.org/WlugMA (no %20uvhash) at 7:00 and found people there. Does jitsi create rooms upon demand from anyone? My problem was that, while I could hear other people (at least while they were near the microphone and the gloppita-gloppita machine was off) they could not hear me, except intermittently. Worse, it seemed that my laptop was generating noise and feedback, so people had to mute me so that they could hear each other. The problem seemed to be in the software or configuration of my Thinpad with Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) and Firefox ESR 102.15.1 of Sept 12, 2023. I thought I had tested it the day before. I found a way to make a recording and recorded a short speech, which I could play back. It all seemed to work, but when I unplugged it and plugged it back in it required reconfiguration and I may have missed something and wound up using the built-in mike. The same USB headphone/mike seemed to work when attached to a Windows machine, but where's the fun in that? I checked out early in disgust. Suggestions on how to debug the mike might be helpful. -- Keith _______________________________________________ WLUG mailing list -- wlug(a)lists.wlug.org To unsubscribe send an email to wlug-leave(a)lists.wlug.org Create Account: https://wlug.mailman3.com/accounts/signup/ Change Settings: https://wlug.mailman3.com/postorius/lists/wlug.lists.wlug.org/ Web Forum/Archive: https://wlug.mailman3.com/hyperkitty/list/wlug@lists.wlug.org/message/OA5FC…

Reminder! Meeting Feb 16th 2017 Subject: iscsi / gfs2

by Tim Keller

Hey Gang, Our rescheduled meeting is going to be on Feb 16th @ 7pm. The location is changed a bit, we're going to be in the Hagglund Rm (rm 301) in the student center. I'm going to do my talk regarding storage protocols focusing on iscsi and doing a demo of gfs2. I might end up only being a talk as my laptop is currently misbehaving, but we'll see. There will be snacks and refreshments and afterwards we'll head down to Tech! Later, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Jitsi..

by Tim Keller

Last night it was brought to my attention that Jitsi has decided to become more "zoom" like. That sucks. Moreover, and I've noticed this as well, their free instance's performance is all over the place.. some meetings the performance is spot on, other meetings, like last night, it was not so great. There should be zero barriers to people joining the meeting. To this end, I'm going to explore what it's going to take to stand up my own Jitsi instance. Likely hosted in some cloud provider with possibly a nice DNS entry. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".
