I made the mistake of offering a linux basics class at work. I was going to use the Ubuntu LiveCD to get the class some hands on. This way, they could take the CD and install it if they wanted too. I figured about 5-10 responders would say they wanted to go to the class. So far about 20 people are coming. Anyone have any extra 5.1 Ubuntu CD's they can part with? I need at least 10 more now and don't have time to wait for the mail. I know I could make copies, but talking about the free-ness of it, it would be better to hand them a nice legit copy. If so, please bring them to the LUG meeting tomorow if you can. Thanks... Mike
I have 5 livecd/install sets that I got shipped from ubuntu awhile back. I'd like to keep one, so you can have the other four. Eric P.S. The meeting is at 7pm in the access grid room on Wednesday, right? Mike Leo wrote:

I think he knows that copying it is okay. Packaged CDs are more professional AND more convincing. He's trying to get people to switch to linux :)( Eric Eric Martin wrote:

Since when is teaching a class on Linux a mistake! ;-) Actually, I have taught two such classes to the front-line admins at work. Of the two, the far more successful class used floater laptops booted with Knoppix. Knoppix much reduced the setup time and allowed me to keep the floater laptop guy happy by not blowing away the XP installs on the machines. I highly recommend it for teaching. I had various network services serving up a complete environment to the student machines; all the machines were on an isolated network in the conference room. I used a USB key to store the net service config files as well as the course material. I presented the class material in PDF to the student laptops with Apache. Everyone plugged in a floater, booted their Knoppix CD, and then browsed to the class material on my machine. I can't find the text I used anymore, but tldp.org seems to have some much nicer free texts now: http://www.tldp.org/guides.html BTW, Should WLUG have a reserve of Ubuntu CDs available? I can put in an order for a large set if folks like the idea. - Adam
Thats all good info! My plan is similar, but to use the Ubuntu liveCD during the class, and let them take their copy home with them. Who ever brings a laptop can participate in the hands on parts of the class (which I haven't made up yet) via the liveCD. Ill have an overhead with the slide's on it and can dump out to a terminal when needed. nice link, too..i might just modify that to my environment. Andy ordered a nice pile of the last Ubuntu...maybe he can do it again with dapper dan (or whatever its called). thanks --- Adam Keck <ghostis@mac.com> wrote:

I agree! :-) I'll second the nomination for Knoppix as an excellent tool for teaching Linux, especially at the user level. I use it for the class I teach and the studets really enjoy taking it home and experimenting. I suspect that the Ubuntu Live CD probably is based on Knoppix. I actually suspect that the Ubuntu Livecd is based on Ubuntu. Maybe it's just a hunch :P Eric Andy Stewart wrote:

In a sense, we're both right, I think. Take a look at the Live CD and see how it works. I'm pretty sure I saw "Knoppix technology" in there when I last looked.
