how to setup wireless network for WPI campus
hi, everyone. I am trying to config my linux laptop so I can use wireless connection on campus. However, it is not easy. I modified some script file and added the SSID and WEP info into it. However, it still didn't work. Anyone have some idea or experience about this? thanks

it'd help if you outlined the distribution and tools you're using (really distribution is the most important) -mike
My linux distribution is Mandrake 9.1. Kernel verson is 2.4.21-0.13(uname -a gave me this info). The wireless card is from Netgear. thanks Ren On Sat, 7 Feb 2004, Mike Frysinger wrote:

What model card? Some of their cards are supported, some are not. On Sun, 2004-02-08 at 10:01, Zhiwei Ren wrote:

hi, thank you for the respond. My card is Netgear 802.11b PCMCIA MA401, it is supported by linux. Because I can use wireless under those wireless network which doesn't require SSID or WEP. So I think I should ask my question in this way: How and where to set the configuration for SSID and WEP in Mandrake linux? Ren On Sun, 8 Feb 2004, Gregory Boyce wrote:

I am not a Mandrake user and I don't know anything about the WPI wireless network. However, here are some commands I have used with the Knoppix distro to connect to my home wireless network using a SSID and WEP: iwconfig eth0 nick "MyLaptop" essid "MyLan" key 1234567890abcd rate auto ifconfig eth0 up pump -i eth0 pump -i eth0 --status ifconfig eth0 Note that the first iwconfig command sets a SSID to MyLan and the WEP key to 1234567890abcd Also, your wireless card may not be on eth0.
