Reminder: November WLUG Meeting at the Hudson Public Library! Topic: Intel Management Engine.
Hey Everybody, We've got a meeting this Thursday November 18th, 2021 at 7pm - 8:30pm at the Hudson Public Library! Firstly, a big shout out to Joshua Stone for making the reservation at the Hudson Public Library. Secondly, the meeting will also be online at our usual Jitsi location for people who can't make it in person. https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA The topic we'll be discussing at the meeting is the Intel Management Engine technology buried in every Intel CPU. This technology includes a version of Minix running on a separate core inside your CPU you don't control. Moreover, with the right software, changes to your machine can be made remotely, even when the system is powered off (but connected to power). As with all this stuff, of course since the whole thing is cooked into the firmware, it's full of security flaws, etc.. We'll talk about those flaws and how to disable it! We'll also likely touch on the Tesla Dojo D1 processing unit. They've made some claims that I've posted to the mailing list. Logan did some digging and it turns out their claims are not as blow your mind as would be first interpreted. The Hudson Public Library does allow food and drink, so I will bring the usual pretzels and snacks. Afterwards we will be going to Rail Trail Flatbread <https://railtrailflatbread.com/>for dinner. Toss me a line privately if you'll be attending so we've got an idea of how many people will be going out for dinner. I look forward to seeing you there! Later, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".
Hey Tim, Names Forrest I introduced myself a while back on the forum I live in Hudson and know the area pretty well so I will be there for my first in-person meeting and so for everyone who does not know there is a parking lot in the back behind the fire station it is right next to the library
Hey Forrest, Great to hear from you! It's nice to see a fellow resident! More on the parking situation, the town does list numerous public parking spots in downtown that visitors can use, most within a few minutes of walking: https://www.discoverhudson.org/plan-your-visit/ - *Library:* 3 Washington St, <https://www.google.com/maps/place/3+Washington+St,+Hudson,+MA+01749> Hudson <https://www.google.com/maps/place/3+Washington+St,+Hudson,+MA+01749> - *South Street Parking Lot:* 25 South St, Hudson <https://www.google.com/maps/dir/25+South+St,+Hudson,+MA+01749/Hudson+Public+...> - *Avidia Lot after 6PM:* 78 Main St, Hudson <https://www.google.com/maps/dir/78+Main+St,+Hudson,+MA+01749/Hudson+Public+L...> - *Cellucci Parking:* 23 Houghton St, Hudson <https://www.google.com/maps/dir/23+Houghton+St,+Hudson,+MA+01749/Hudson+Publ...> - *RailRoad Ave. and Church Street Parking:* Nearby 29 Church St, Hudson <https://www.google.com/maps/dir/29+Church+St,+Hudson,+MA+01749/Hudson+Public...> - *2 Hour Parking Lot:* 8 South St, Hudson <https://www.google.com/maps/dir/8+South+St,+Hudson,+MA+01749/Hudson+Public+L...> There are also plenty of side streets that people will use for off-street parking. Admittedly Hudson's parking situation isn't the most convenient for visitors who aren't used to the area, and this is backed up with a parking study: https://www.townofhudson.org/sites/g/files/vyhlif3281/f/pages/parking_report... *There are 1,400 parking spaces, but many spaces are hard to find. *
− There is a perception of lack of parking − Many lots do not have clear or visible signage that indicates whether or not one can park there − There are more than a dozen different types of regulations − Half of off-street parking is "restricted access", meaning that the lots are not available to the general public − There are some lots that are publicly owned and available to the general public, yet most of the stakeholders and workshop participants we spoke with did not know they existed − Some parking areas are difficult to find from the roadway and/or challenging to access, so they end up being underutilized − Overall signage is confusing to customers
The study is fairly old and the parking situation may have improved since then, but I think the point is clear that there's a demand for improved parking. I hope the town will do more to make parking easier to find instead of adding more parking spaces. We definitely have plenty of parking, it's just that visitors may have to plan ahead as it's not designed like a shopping plaza with massive parking lots in front of storefronts. I also hope the town will do more to invest in transit so car traffic and parking demand are reduced. As it stands right now, our regional transit authority has a fairly limited schedule and its coverage isn't great either: https://www.mwrta.com/routes/fixed-routes/route-15 It is for example technically possible to travel from Hudson to Boston via bus and train, but it will take an excruciatingly long time, requires multiple transfers, and may even be at times be unsafe due to poor pedestrian infrastructure along the route: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Peter's+Grove,+11+Lake+St,+Hudson,+MA+01749/Back+Bay,+145+Dartmouth+St,+Boston,+MA+02116 This is why my wife and I compromise by driving to the train station first when going on day trips into the city. We hope to further reduce our car dependency by having more robust public transit in the central Mass area. There's something to be said by having the freedom to travel to places without needing to take several tons of privately-owned metal with you. - Josh On Fri, Nov 19, 2021 at 8:06 AM Forrest S via WLUG <wlug@lists.wlug.org> wrote:

Hey Tim, Thanks for the shout out! I'm happy to help set up meetings like this so long as there's interest! I've also informed my colleagues today (admittedly on short notice) about this meeting, so we might get some more attendees or listeners this time around! - Josh On Tue, Nov 16, 2021 at 12:48 PM Tim Keller via WLUG <wlug@lists.wlug.org> wrote:

Firstly, a big shout out to Joshua Stone for making the reservation at the Hudson Public Library.
I live in Worcester. For a long time I just walked up the hill to WLUG at WPI. I got bad at walking, so I got a ride and hung out in the library until meeting time. Those days are over. I don't know where Hudson is. I assume it's in Worcester county. The "W" in "WLUG" no longer stands for WPI, or even Wormtown. OK.
Secondly, the meeting will also be online at our usual Jitsi location for people who can't make it in person. https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA
Did this happen? I was having a slow day after getting a anti-covid booster Wednesday, thinking of just skipping the whole thing. Diane was not home, so I could not use her laptop as I have in the past to join jit.si WLUG meetings, but I tried to connect with my own. It is not really usable, with its built in microphone and speaker feedbacking, but I thought I could listen and wave. I could see myself on screen, so I know the camera was working. The microphone seemed to be working, but when I pushed the "join meeting" button nothing happened. This was probably around 7:30. I assumed my own system (hardware, sofrware, network...) was the problem, but on further thought maybe you guys did not get it set up, or quit when nobody else joined the meeting for half an hour.
The topic we'll be discussing at the meeting is the Intel Management Engine technology buried in every Intel CPU.
I think I had better find out about this some other way. Thanks for the heads-up. What good is it to have the source code, if you can't trust the computer to run it?
We'll talk about those flaws and how to disable it!
Any pointers to more info? -- Keith
Keith, I was there, virtually, from 1900 to 2000 EST and Jitsey was doing fine. Sorry you had problems. md On Fri, Nov 19, 2021, 16:23 Keith Wright via WLUG <wlug@lists.wlug.org> wrote:
