Keyboard and mouse repeatedly disconnect/reconnect
Tonight I am being reminded several times per hour that something weird is happening here. I have a mouse and keyboard USB disconnect problem that has been hanging around for a couple of years now. Across the room where my old computer sits quietly running, the red light in the mouse keeps flashing as it goes off then comes back on, even though this computer is idle. So I checked /var/log/messages, and sure enough, messages appear there that correspond with the times the red light flashes. Messages like these crop up regularly and often in /var/log/messages Computer 1: Apr 24 02:47:40 geurig kernel: [1086766.208280] usb 5-1: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=c03e Apr 24 02:47:40 geurig kernel: [1086766.208286] usb 5-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 Apr 24 02:47:40 geurig kernel: [1086766.208292] usb 5-1: Product: USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse Apr 24 02:47:40 geurig kernel: [1086766.208296] usb 5-1: Manufacturer: Logitech Apr 24 02:47:40 geurig kernel: [1086766.432055] __ratelimit: 1 messages suppressed Apr 24 02:48:13 geurig kernel: [1086799.620065] usb 5-1: USB disconnect, address 109 Apr 24 02:48:14 geurig kernel: [1086799.872028] usb 5-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 110 Apr 24 02:48:14 geurig kernel: [1086800.024007] usb 5-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Apr 24 02:48:14 geurig kernel: [1086800.065154] input: Logitech USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse as /class/input/input112 Apr 24 02:48:14 geurig kernel: [1086800.092124] input,hidraw0: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Logitech USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse] on usb-0000:00:10.1-1 This PC is running Debian Lenny kernel 2.6.26-1-686. Same thing often used to happen with the USB keyboard, too. Now I'm using a PS2 keyboard in this PC, which does not result in these disconnect messages, but still seeing these messages about the mouse. Sometimes this happens over and over again many times within a short period of time (several times/minute). There were lockup problems related to this problem when I was running Etch, after this keyboard or mouse USB disconnect thing had disconnected and reconnected some large number of times, I think it was well over a hundred times. Keyboard and/or mouse would no longer accept input, forcing me to have to ssh in and reboot it, or if I couldn't do that, had to hard reboot. Restart X is not enough to fix this. This has happened with various different mice and keyboards. So we installed a USB card, thinking this might be a hardware problem with the USB ports, but no, the same problem crops up no matter if the mouse or keyboard is plugged into the card, or into the USB ports in the case. Has anyone run into this before, and if so, did you get it fixed? Thanks very much, Liz J
USB can randomly dis/reconnect and that is normal. The lockup issues could be related to other drivers and/or X fighting over the hardware. On Apr 25, 2009, at 13:16, E Johnson <iris.gates@gmail.com> wrote:

Had same problem in this new PC, running a recent Ubuntu Hardy (8.04) install. This PC is only a few weeks old, now with a fresh install of Lenny in its own partition. Only the hard drive and the DVD drive are not brand-new.
I possibly (maybe?) solved the keyboard issue in this PC by specifying the correct type of keyboard in Settings > Peripherals > Keboard (in KDE). Not sure if it's really gone or not. But now getting hundreds of messages about the mouse, as above.
Computer 3. It's also happening in my daughter's computer, that has the exact same motherboard and almost the same CPU as computer 2. Hers is running Ubuntu 8.04 2.6.24-23.52 (running Gnome), just updated last week. She has never complained about any lockup problem, but she reboots more often than I do.

Computer 4. I believe this also happens in the laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1525n, running (now) Ubuntu Hardy (this came with Ubuntu 7.10 pre-uinstalled). Cannot post /var/log/messages from this today, since this laptop is away with daughter. But the same messages appear in that one, too.
Has anyone run into this before, and if so, did you get it fixed?

Is it normal for USB to disconnct/reconnect repeatedly, many times per minute? Is that still considered random and normal? That's what we have here, in the three different computers that I have access to today. Not a few times, but zillions of lines in /var/log/messages. It's worst in the older PC. The mice mostly have been pretty standard Logitek versions, nothing fancy or unusual. How can I find out if the lockup is caused by "X fighting over the hardware", or by drivers? Thanks, Liz J 2009/4/25 J. R. Mauro <jrm8005@gmail.com>:

That sounds fishy, but possible

Kernel version, distro, output of lsmod? It looks like you use different event drivers in each setup, but if you know which uses which, that could help

Sorry, didn't see you already had given version/distro info. See if you can upgrade to a more recent kernel; tons of issues with the input layer were fixed between .24/.26 and now. Other advice: ensure that evdev is the driver being used. Other than that, it could be hardware issues. P.S. I would recommend .28 as I don't think .29 is incredibly stable. Never had jumping mouse that I recall. My (new) PC using a little KingWin mouse (no longer available); "old" PC using old Logitek; have used other Logitech including one that's now connected to the laptop (the one I could not post /var/log/messages for). Daughter PC using Logitech mouse since her light-up one died. These Logitech mouse are low-end, 3 buttons. Two are identical, that can work I believe a 5-button. Can get mfr part numbers if needed. Keyboards are miscellaneous, mainly slim-type, inexpensive Rosewill (Newegg's own brand) which these seem to be mfr by "Chesen." Can get mfr part numbers if needed. Will try the newer kernel per J. R. Mauro suggestion & check back in. Liz J 2009/4/25 Jason Couture <plaguethenet@gmail.com>:

FWIW, I don't believe that this (bizzare mouse behavior) is a Linux issue. I have a wireless logitech keyboard/mouse at work hooked up to a thinkpad running XP, and find that sometimes the mouse goes haywire. It seems to be due to wireless interference (there's a crapload of that in my office). I find that if it's particularly bad, I can force it to swtich channels and reassociate by hitting the connect button on the receiver followed by the connect button on the mouse (order is important, as just hitting the connect button on the mouse will appear to reassociate, but will not change the channel). Also I've noticed that these problems tend to be more likely to occur/are worse when the mouse is running low on battery (which it eats through like candy, but that's another gripe). Hope that helps, Lee On Sat, Apr 25, 2009 at 11:11 PM, Jason Couture <plaguethenet@gmail.com>wrote:

IIRC this is an issue with wired devices. It may not be a kernel issue at all. Sometimes, hardware is just flakey. The real test would be to use a different brand of mouse for a while and see if the errors stop.
Hope that helps,
Lee

It's happened across office moves (in the same building), so I'm less inclined to believe that it's the location of the receiver specifically. Since my company creates wireless devices, we've just got a ton of interference all the time (I'd estimate that at any given point in time we have around 100 APs talking in a 100 yard radius. I've got four in my office, not to mention the four stations). Also it's fine most of the time ... when I replace the batteries, it chooses a new channel often, and is borked until I get it to move to a clear channel, and then it works fine for another month or two until the batteries die. Funny enough ... the keyboard just works ... I've not changed the batteries in two years, and never had interference problems ... hooray for super low-bandwidth applications :) Cheers, Lee On Tue, Apr 28, 2009 at 1:31 PM, Richard Klein <richspk@gmail.com> wrote:

My original question had to do with USB disconnects/reconnects. I have this "issue" with wired mouse and wired keyboard. Sometimes, after repeated messages all the same (many per minute over hours), this appears to cause the keyboard and/or mouse to lock up, not accepting input. At that point the PC requires reboot. Same messages in /var/log/messages using: -- different types (brands) of wired mouse and/or wired keyboard, -- different distros of Linux (various Ubuntu, various Debian), -- different kernels, -- four different PCs with 3 different mobos, each with their own set of peripherals. Had this problem going on two years now. Liz J 2009/4/28 Richard Klein <richspk@gmail.com>:

Odd. 2.6.28 was unproblematic from the traffic on LKML. I see many more complaints about 29. Maybe Greg ported good patches into stable. What was Fedora's beef?

How is the sound on the -29 kernel? Sound has been giving me fits on the various ubuntu kernels since April 08. I need headset to work; don't have or use external speakers. Hmm... Ubuntu (tried against 8.10 x64, 9.04 i386 liveCD & x64) (and Fedora 10 x64) have problems with sound with my recent HP DV4-1222NR laptop. I suspect my audio setup is similar to E. Johnson's. Problem is with alsa-driver. When I compile from source it works, until the kernel changes. Even then the mute & volume "smart keys" do not have the desired effect, so I have to use the icon or menu. Gnome keyboard shortcuts gui is poorly documented - there is no man page, no indication what config file gnome-keybinding-properties corresponds to. How do I change the action "volume mute" to affect the proper device? -Randy. J. R. Mauro wrote:

Well, that's the nature of an unstable kernel API :P

There are lots of ways to do that. Gnome and KDE are a bit mystical (and don't work). Google for "evtest", which is a program that can look at a file in /dev/input/ and tell you what key/keycode/etc was pressed. Also, xev might be enough for you to find out what key it is, and map that into whatever application you use.

How is the sound on the -29 kernel? Sound has been giving me fits on the various ubuntu kernels since April 08.
I need headset to work; don't have or use external speakers.
Mobo = ASUS M3A78-Cm, which has Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
