I want to set up some samba shares to be mounted on my win98 box, and I'd like to protect the shares with usernames and passwords, but I can't remember how to specify a username from the win98 box. I seem to remember a way by adding the username to the share spec, but I can't find any documentation on the subject. Any ideas? Or should I use a different approach? (I have 3 kids & a wife who are mainly windows users, but will sometimes use my linux box. I'd like them to be able to read/write their files from either machine.) TIA, Bill

I'm not using a username on my win98 box. It would be too confusing to my "windows community" at home. Bill

So what username does Samba see when you map drives? You might have to increase the debug level in smb.conf (log level = 9). -- Charles R. I haven't had a chance to play with the different suggestions yet -- too many distractions. One thing, though, is that I've confirmed my "senior moment"... My recollection of a place to add a username (without a username box/prompt) was completely wrong. I was remembering the WinNT method of specifying a different NT domain with the username in a username box. <sigh> I have some more ideas/requirements. 1. I'd like several shares, each mounted with a different linux/samba username, so that, when my "users" work from linux (staroffice), they have the right ownership/permissions for their files. 2. I recollect that samba has a feature that will allow the Win98 box to specify a password without a username. Samba then looks to see if the password matches from a list of username/password entries. It then allows the mount, using the username that works with the password. (Do I have this right, or is this another senior moment?) 3. Does Win98 have a "remember this password" button on the mount gui? (I'm not so much worried about security behind my firewall as much as I'd like to get the ownship of the samba-shared files right.) Thanks, Bill
then try utilizing the 'guest' logon ... if that doesnt work, setup your windows machines to auto-logon as some user and use that ... tweakui (microsoft provides this for free via their website) allows you to setup users to logon automatically in win 9x -mike On Wed, 2 Oct 2002, Bill Mills-Curran wrote:

If you have only 5 users, I think the simplest approach is to create a unique share for each person, so that when you go to \\server, you'll see shares for mom, dad, kid1, kid2, kid3. Each one should have an account on the linux box, and each share should have a 'force user' & 'force group' in smb.conf for their own account. That way, if you click on kid1, you have to enter kid1's password, regardless of what Win98 sends for the username. You also have to remember to uncheck 'remember password' too. -Chuck
