So here is the sad and embarrassing story... It began at Christmastime when my father-in-law decided to give me two CPU upgrades and a bunch of memory. To make a very long and sad story shorter, the PIII 850 MHz CPU I got is not compatible with my motherboard (an Intel SE2, specifically 720-series). So, I have a PIII 850 I can't use and was wondering if anyone would like to swap a PIII 550 or 600 MHz for the PIII 850. Yes, you read correctly, I am willing to trade down! If anyone is interested in the details, the following URL will give you all you want to know: http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/se2/se2_proc.htm. You will note the listing of motherboard revisions in the third column of the chart. You will also note that the 600 MHz PIII is the fastest chip my board can support, it not being a 754-series board. Thanks, Steve P.S., don't let Doug know about this... ;-)
If the pinout is the same, why not just run the 850 at 600? Then you won't have to trade chips. You can always run slower, just not faster. Good luck! -Malcolm Stephen C. Daukas wrote:

That wasn't intended for the list. -Malcolm Malcolm Beaulieu wrote:

That seems kind of odd. I would think you'd be able to run the 850 underclocked to 600 without any problems. Tim. On Wed, 2002-02-20 at 16:46, Stephen C. Daukas wrote:

The PIII chips are fixed clocks, you can't change the multiplier on them (like you could on the celerons). At least that's what I remember. As for a trade, I've got a suspect motherboard with a pair of PIII 450s (or so, I can't remember right now) that I'd be willing to sell/trade. I think the only thing I sorta maybe looking for is a really good sound card to use with Linux. My DELL Precision 610MT (dual PIII Xeon 550) has a crappy builtin sound card (which I can't get to work with ALSA) and I'm not happy with the Avance ALS4000 card I have either. I'll try to make the next thursday night meeting and bring stuff for trade/sell. John
