I also bought the Motorola modem directly from Charter. It was $200 and they'll split it into 4 payments tacked on to your bill. I let the installer set it up on my W2K box and, after he left, swapped the cat5 to my Linux box. I set it up for NAT and everything worked fine. I've since bought a Linksys router so I can tear apart my Linux box without disrupting internet access for the rest of my network. Which model, and what did they charge?

As you noted, I didn't find many good hits searching for this on the net, but they do show up on ebay. An SB3100 looks like it will go for something over $180, while an SB4100 is bidding at $225 with 2 days to go. I have no clue about the models.

For those prices you might as well buy it from Charter. I got mine back in October and if you rent it it was $15 a month. If you bought the modem it was $195.00. If you take the buy option you can spread the modem payment out over three months. I took the buy option it will pay for itself in a year. John................... Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want, but the realization of how much you already have.

Note that the vendor's requirements may also change over time. MediaOne changed some of their modems in some areas. Those who rented the modems from them had them swapped out at no charge. Those that bought had to re-purchase. Probably doesn't happen too often but it might.
