I'm about to take the plunge and get hooked up to Charter Cable for internet access. Does anyone have any experience/recommendations for cable modems? Is it better to buy my own, and from where? TIA, Bill

John, Which model, and what did they charge? As you noted, I didn't find many good hits searching for this on the net, but they do show up on ebay. An SB3100 looks like it will go for something over $180, while an SB4100 is bidding at $225 with 2 days to go. I have no clue about the models. Thanks, Bill
I also bought the Motorola modem directly from Charter. It was $200 and they'll split it into 4 payments tacked on to your bill. I let the installer set it up on my W2K box and, after he left, swapped the cat5 to my Linux box. I set it up for NAT and everything worked fine. I've since bought a Linksys router so I can tear apart my Linux box without disrupting internet access for the rest of my network. There's never been any problem with Charter, though the speed is nowhere near 1.5 Mbps. Clint Bill Mills-Curran wrote:

I am using charter as well. With the promotion of a free month of service if I bought the modem from them I paid $135 for my surfboard modem...so far no problem. The only complaint is that occasionally the mail servers go down. This is a relatively infrequent occurance and is only a minor inconvienance. mike <snip>

For those prices you might as well buy it from Charter. I got mine back in October and if you rent it it was $15 a month. If you bought the modem it was $195.00. If you take the buy option you can spread the modem payment out over three months. I took the buy option it will pay for itself in a year. John................... Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want, but the realization of how much you already have.
Bill> Which model, and what did they charge? Urq... I think its a 3100. Bill> As you noted, I didn't find many good hits searching for this on Bill> the net, but they do show up on ebay. I personally feel the ebay is a bad place to get deals. But that's just me. I just paid the price that Charter was asking since I would own it and be able to use it for quite a while after that. You also have to be careful that you don't get a model they don't support, or which won't work with their system... John

Note that the vendor's requirements may also change over time. MediaOne changed some of their modems in some areas. Those who rented the modems from them had them swapped out at no charge. Those that bought had to re-purchase. Probably doesn't happen too often but it might.
I use the SB4100 - it came with the service (Shrewsbury Town Cable) and the cost is, presumably, bundled with the monthly fee as there was no purchase option. Shrewsbury does swap Modems from time to time... This modem works fine for me (500 Up and Down) but then again, I think of it as just a pipe fitting connecting my LAN (via router) to Shrewsbury Cable. ;-) At 05:50 PM 2/28/2001 -0500, you wrote:
