Hello, my name is Mark McLaughlin, I started a computer club in Hudson which extends to Marlboro. I hooked up with you because I am very interested in KDE 4 and want to learn more about how to make linux work for me since I am a writer/enthusiast not a programmer. I am getting better at GIMP and re-learning my MS Office skills with OpenOffice, but, I like to learn inkscape, scribus, do more with KompoZer, and do some multimedia as well I could use advice on how to make my computer club function well and if my club and yours could mingle a bit here and there on occasion when Fedora 9 and KDE 4.1 finally is available. I love Fedora, I feel it could catch up to Ubuntu and maybe surpass it with some new features. IMHO, Windoze XP will be the last good Windoze OS for sure, Windoze 7 has to be able to function like linux in order to survive... Mark McLaughlin hudsoncomputercrew.wordpress.com Hudson, MA

HI Mark, Congratulations on getting your computer club started in Hudson/Marlboro. I hope you get many attendees and that it goes well for you. I have some limited experience with Gimp, and perhaps a bit more with OpenOffice, but I've never used inkscape, scribus, or KompoZer, for example. Perhaps others in the group could comment about those programs. Nah, Fedora will never catch Ubuntu. ;-) (Oops, was that the opening salvo to a religious war? Just kidding...don't start a war, please.) We have many folks in WLUG experienced on either (or perhaps both) of those high quality distros. Does your group have a website? I'd be happy to put a link to it from the WLUG site if you would reciprocate. Mark, For tutorials, you might want to listen to these Linux Reality podcasts from Oct 2007. I am having trouble getting mySql operating with gentoo linux. I am not looking for gentoo-specific help, but I am looking for basic setup information (prefeerably a manual) on how to setup mySql undere linux. If anybody has information where to get this, It would be appreciated. -- kstratton@fastmail.us
What are you trying to do with it once its setup? -Jared On Mon, Mar 3, 2008 at 8:13 AM, <kstratton@fastmail.us> wrote:

I want to get myth tv installed. My problem is that I can not get to the mysql prompt. Once I get there, I think I can follow the gentoo setup guides for mySql and myth TV. I am looking for an independent setup guide for mysql to get to the mysql prompt so that i can troubleshoot what is wrong with my setup. Once I get it insalled, I am considering buying hdhomerun. So what happens when you type 'emerge mysql' on your box? I haven't done Gentoo in a *long* time, but that's probably the starting point. You need to make sure you have both the mysql server running, as well as the client on your system. This wiki looks like it's what you want to follow as well: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Setup_MythTV John
Yes, that looks like where I started (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Setup_MythTV)
From the wiki, I found that I need mysql working first. I used:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/mysql-howto.xml 1)emerge -DuN mySql builds fine emerge --config =dev-db/mysql-5.0.54 seems to execute as I would expect 2) /etc/init.d/mysql start was run before I tried 'mysql -u root -h localhost -p'. I get an access error with 'mysql -u root -h localhost -p'. I know I will eventually have to 'rc-update add /etc/init.d/mysql' once I get this working. What I am looking for is a guide for mysql so that instruct me how to manually configure the installed mySql to the point of getting a working mysql prompt (independent of linux distribution). This will give me idea of the configuration files for mysql and possibly allow me to figure out what is broken with the setup. I guess my next step is to do some reading at http://dev.mysql.com/doc/. For me, linux is just a hobby, so this may take awhile. IF I figure what is causing my trouble, I will try to give a good description of the problem/solution. With my luck, 'emerge --sync;emerge world -DuN' will fix this before I get a chance to figure what is going on.... Thank you for tolerating this. The mysql.com docs will probably help you alot, but so should the gentoo docs as well. I forget what the default password for mysql is, but you can certainly google for 'reset mysql root password' and learn how you can start mysql is safe-mode without any password protection so you can reset the privs. John

Gentoo doesn't provide a default password, it tells you to set it yourself.
