2 goddamn megabyte message
Somebody just sent a 2 Megabyte message to this mailing list, I think. I don't even know who sent it, because I got tired of watching it download and telnet'ed into my pop server to delete it totally unread. Since I don't know who you are you are safe (from me at least) if you never do anything like that again. Can the mailing list software be configured to throw any message more than, say, a generous 200K, into /dev/null and reply to the sender with a polite message about his mother and a baboon? Thank you very much. -- Keith

I did it. Got a problem? Take it up with me and not the list, and please keep your profanity to yourself.

Let's leave my mother out of this, shall we? The mailing list software sent my e-mail to the WLUG mailing list admin due to its size. I believe the limit is set to 20 Kbytes. The WLUG mailing list admin obviously approved it for posting and sent it on its way. I am not the WLUG mailing list admin (I suspect it is either Chuck or Frank).
Thank you very much.

You're quite welcome! I'm happy to keep people informed about important events in the Linux world, such as the Enterprise Linux Forum being held in Boston. Ah, but you'd have known that if you hadn't deleted a partially downloaded e-mail message. Now, to the more polite members of WLUG, my apologies if the aforementioned e-mail has caused you some grief. I'll endeavor to use more care in the future. Geepers, are there still dialuppers alive today that haven't set up there own (damned) rules? The roaring naughts are the age of rules and policies, baby - get with the program as they say. Lesse, lemme recount a few -- if an email contains less than 1m, send it to my watch; if its an mpeg or graphics file, send it to my media server and let it figure it out; if its anything microsoft, send it my handheld - its probably work related -- and if its got the words: sex, drugs, or rock and roll, send it to all of them, baby, cause I'm a wild and crazy guy with 'lectronic stuff, man, and I'm comin' to yer town ---- --so betta watch out, o.k.? and btb, election day is pretty much here right now, so vote for ME, (goddammit), because (I swear,) if you don't, we'll all loose... -----Original Message----- From: wlug-admin@mail.wlug.org [mailto:wlug-admin@mail.wlug.org]On Behalf Of Andy Stewart Sent: Friday, November 01, 2002 11:09 PM To: wlug@mail.wlug.org Subject: Re: [Wlug] 2 goddamn megabyte message On Friday 01 November 2002 10:41 pm, Keith Wright wrote:

Well, you sent this message to the list, so I guess you want to continue the discussion on the list. As I said, I did not know you did it. I am surprised to say the least.

OK.

A very reasonable limit.
The WLUG mailing list admin obviously approved it for posting and sent it on its way. I am not the WLUG mailing list admin (I suspect it is either Chuck or Frank).
Even more surprised.

That seems well under 20K.
Ah, but you'd have known that if you hadn't deleted a partially downloaded e-mail message.
Actually I did know, because Karl Hiramoto sent a message that quoted everything needful to know.
Now, to the more polite members of WLUG, my apologies if the aforementioned e-mail has caused you some grief. I'll endeavor to use more care in the future.
I'm going to sleep now. -- Keith
It's your own fault for having a crappy dialup and not getting message headers before downloading the whole thing :) so apparently ANYONE could send you a large file and cause the same problem. When i moved into this apartment one thing I made sure before i signed the lease was that i could get broadband with a static IP for my box :) Sorry I just can't relate to only having a dialup.. I can't imagine the pain you must have :) On Fri, 1 Nov 2002, Andy Stewart wrote:

What program will let you download the headers before downloading the message?
the IMAP protocol works great for me. Gregory Avedissian wrote:
