Hi WLUG, We had a suggestion last night over a few beers that perhaps we could conduct our next Linux meeting in Shrewsbury over a few BBQd burgers, dogs, etc. What do people think of that idea? If this idea is accepted by enough folks, it would be held on the same day and time as our next regularly scheduled meeting. What do folks think of this proposal? Later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org
I know I should just go to the site, but how was the last meeting? I was hoping to make this my first meeting but I ended up in a medical clinic with my 11 week old son instead (a 102.5 fever is NOT GOOD). He's doing well; I'm not. I'd like to come out, but I'd feel REALLY stupid coming to a BBQ for my first time; talk about bush league! Wes On Thu, 2002-07-18 at 21:02, Andy Stewart wrote:

HI Wes, I have 3 kids...I know what you mean, and one of them is only 7 weeks old. The others are 6 yrs and 4 yrs. Come on over and meet WLUG and see if we're the kind of group that will interest you. If we have the BBQ as stated, then you're more than welcome to show up. If not, we'll just have our regular meeting in Kinnicutt Hall at WPI, and you can still show up and be welcomed. :-) If you bring a Microsoft box to the meeting for any purpose other than target practice, and you won't be welcomed. Pretty simple, eh? :-) :-) I haven't posted anything on the WLUG website about our last meeting, but here's how it went. I brought my new laptop with my wireless access point and my wireless network card. Chuck Anderson brought his laptop, cat5 cable, and his hub. We established a connection between the two computers and showed the crowd how we did it. We did not prepare anything in advance, so the 1 or 2 snags that we hit (and quickly fixed) ended up being more realistic to the audience. Many folks commented that they liked this style over the formal presentation style (which seldom says what to do when things *don't* work). Although I haven't asked Theo directly (but he's out there somewhere!), this question did arise A few wireless laptops running VNC sessions from a host which has Theo's slides (if he makes any) might do the trick. Last time we had a BBQ, about a dozen people showed up, so something like the aforementioned might work in that case. If, however, about 30 people showed up(!), this idea probably wouldn't work so well. I'm not sure if Doug (WLUG BBQ host) has a 60" projection screen TV that he could connect to his laptop. If we asked him, maybe he'd buy one for the occasion. :-) Later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org
Hey, one more thing. My pc-card didn't come with a hard-case for storage, which kinda defeats the purpose because I'm not traveling with it if it's not in a protected case! Anyone know where I might pick one up? Wes On Fri, 2002-07-19 at 01:04, Andy Stewart wrote:

I have a projector, or I should say I have access to one, that I can plug a laptop into. Doug and I were trying to figure where to project and onto what, and we do have some ideas in mind (generated fog, multiple sprinklers, side of house, bed sheets, et al.). In fact, I think we should use the projector regardless of how many attend - it will be easier for all to see. However, I doubt either of us would mention this to his wife, so buying a 60"+ HDTV, for example, is not entirely ruled out! ;-) If there are any unforeseen issues, my place would be backup, and there is high-speed Internet at both locations, so that shouldn't be an issue (But Doug has a pool!). Given the appropriate technology, like building on the wireless stuff we did this week, it shouldn't matter where the meeting is held (distractions like food and drink aside!). Steve

Well, to be honest I haven't quite figured out what to do for a presentation yet. I figured I'd be talking about what I do to deal with spam, and I was planning on slides and perhaps a "live" demo (or perhaps a local laptop demo would be sufficient...)

Andy, Did you guys set up WEP? I know it's "encryption-lite" but right now I've only my wlan setup with mac address locking only because I can't get wep to work at all. I actually had less trouble setting up wireless in linux than in windows! Speaking of "target practice," did any of you see that iMAC ad on e-reviews? The guy was at a target range, discussing the first iMAC and after saying how each feature was "not enough" he aimed and shot at it! Having dealt with first revision iMACS, I don't think I've ever laughed so hard! Wes On Thu, 2002-07-18 at 23:08, Andy Stewart wrote:

HI Wes, Chuck and I mentioned WEP but didn't actually configure it. I tried once at home and botched it. I'll be trying again soon.
I actually had less trouble setting up wireless in linux than in windows!
I got it working, and at the meeting discovered that I had done it suboptimally. With help from Chuck and the meeting attendees, I was able to get my network configured optimally. Now, as soon as I plug in my wireless card, the network "magically" comes up on its own. Later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

I really recommend setting up IPsec. If you're using Linux, Free S/WAN works well. Personally, it took me a few tries to get things working, but once I did it turned out very well...

Yeah, a friend of mine who uses Windows told me how much of a pain in the ass it was to set up wireless...For me it was quite simple (well, except for the ipsec setup) -- Josh Huber

It works very nicely on OS X as well. Tell the OS to use wireless, give it the WEP key, now I'm on the network. :) -- Randomly Generated Tagline: "We all know Linux is great...it does infinite loops in 5 seconds." (Linus Torvalds about the superiority of Linux on the Amterdam Linux Symposium)

I installed freeswan, but didn't configure it correctly and all of the sudden I didn't have access to my lan (remember that e-mail I sent last week? that was the problem). When I have the time I'll sit down and read all about that and ipsec; but I can't right now. WEP is just this annoying buzz that I should be able to make work, and yet can't. It's annoying. I know it's cracked, but it's still annoying. Wes On Fri, 2002-07-19 at 10:28, Josh Huber wrote:
